Anyone Else Love Dragon Naturally Speaking for Creating Products?

I haven't done a lot of product creation for awhile but I've started doing more recently. Although I'm a pretty fast typist I can't believe how much faster and more enjoyable it is to just dictate the initial drafts of my new products.

It is really helpful to get my initial thoughts down on paper without being encumbered by my typing speed. By dictating it I can just keep going with my thoughts without typing which at times slows me down which can results in forgetting my line of thought.

I'm finding that in a couple hours I can have a pretty good initial draft of a new information product without typing. If you aren't using a tool like this to help you create info products, give it a try.

  • I've been using Dragon since I was a Freshman in College.

It got me through plenty of long nights of studying and having to turn in papers.

Thankfully, I have continued to use it even in my IM career.

Not just for product creation but for blogging too

I recommend it to almost everyone

    • I have had Dragon Naturally Speaking for about a year now, It's a good tool, but I find myself typing more often now that the newness has worn off.

  • It is awesome for writing short snippets also. I love it!

BTW a lot of people don't realize that Windows has built in speech recoginition software. Not as sophisticated as DNS but a good way to try it out.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I have Dragon and used it a bit.

There is a learning curve when you use it however. It is great to get your first draft done and then go in to edit and polish your work later.

    • Yea it's not the end all be all but it sure does take a lot of time off of your work load. It definitely allows you to create more content in a much faster period of time.

If you use it in Microsoft Word you can just correct all your errors in spell check
  • I've been using DNS since version 5.0 and I absolutely love it. I think I'm on version 10.5 at the moment, I haven't upgraded in a couple years. It's an awesome tool for product creation, content creation, etc. Though it does have problems with certain accents.

  • I love DNS. Takes a while for it to recognize your voice and in the first 6 months you might need to "train" it, but after that it's such a time-saver
  • Strangely words go from my brain to my fingers so Dragon actually slows me down. I think those two years as a court reporter has something to do with it.

However, when my wrist or hand starts to act up, I'll use Dragon for a bit to rest my digits but I prefer typing.

    • I tried it but didn't care for it. I've been writing for so long that I get my ideas out much more quickly and efficiently by typing (or even writing by hand) than I do from speaking. I have to keep stopping and thinking of what I want to say when I'm speaking into voice recognition software, whereas the words seem to flow pretty effortlessly when I'm typing.

To each his own, I suppose. We all do things in different ways. I know some people who use Dragon and love it!
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Not only for creating products, but I whipped out a smoking hot
sales copy that converted at 9% using dragon naturally speaking

    So yes, highly recommended
  • DNS Love IT
  • My typing is agonizingly slow. I wonder if this would help or hinder, I don't know, I will have to check it out. Thanks for asking the question.

    • I got DNS 10.5 recently. Have used it a few times. I think it will be good to be able to take a break from typing, but I am a fast typist and tend to think better when I type. I am still in the learning curve on DNS. I think it should be easy, and it is to just get some words on paper. But the formatting commands and so on take a bit to learn.
  • You inspired me to fire my copy up! Thanks.
  • I have been using Dragon NaturallySpeaking since version 5 and am currently on version 9.5 I have felt absolutely no need to upgrade to newer versions.

I basically do everything that would involve typing on it, this includes blogging, forum posts such as this one, and product creation. I also use it to surf the web, open and close my programmes and code my website pages.

Basically the only thing I don't use it for is to control my mouse movements although that is technically possible.

Oh! I also don't use it to drink coffee!
  • So I have just seen the Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11.5 software and wanted to bring this thread to life again to see if anyone has got this model and if its any good? At $100 the home edition seems a great buy if anyone is writing content often.
  • I have also tried my hand at it but i find that my typing is faster. I also find the correcting of errors to be a bit clumsy at times. I havent spent too long with it though so I think I will give it another shot to see if it catches on with me.
  • I use it occasionally as well. Alot of people I mention it to in the offline world are astounded at such a product exists. Quick idea, I wonder if they have an affiliate program!
    • [2] replies
    • I don't think so, but eBay and Amazon have affiliate programs.

Does anyone know...Is it possible to record while dictating to DNS so you have audio and text at the same time?
      • [1] reply
    • They do but the last time I checked, it's through Commission Junction. Also, DNS makes you jump through 'additional' hoops to see see if you're a 'good candidate' for their link. It's hard to be approved as an affiliate.

      I wasn't.

      Still love the product though.

I've been using mine for years. I also train it daily. It's just part of the routine; intense training the first week, (I read it everything,) then 10 minutes of training every day after that. It's great.

  • Oh I hate that Dragon software. It does not work for me at all! I say something like "paper" and it interprets it as something totally different like "table". It's nuts. I don't know if it's my beautiful Canadian accent or what (lol) but it cannot understand what I'm saying and it ends up frustrating me to no end.

Now I just record myself with Audacity and then get my gal on fiverr to transcribe. I love this method.
  • hey guys thanks for this thread...I was wondering if i wanted to spend the time to train it...but i have always wanted it for blogging and product creation...

    I think I am sold
  • I wonder if anyone is using it for writing fiction for Kindle. hmmmm.
    • [1] reply
    • I absolutely adore Kindle for non-fiction info products. It is amazing.

I have found that I can actually close my eyes, visualize the scene and simply describe what I "see" in my head.

Because of this, I find DNS an incredible tool for writing fiction - especially f I have a scene pop into my head and I want to quickly get it down.
  • Its rare that you hear of people using it for more than a week.
Its normally a case of someone getting the software, thinking its great and then getting bored of it a week later.

But if it works for you, great!
  • Seems though I have a bit of a Welsh accent and if anyone has heard a Welsh accent before it can be difficult to translate for actual people let alone a programme, if your bored and need a like Im sure youtube can show you some Welsh accents.
  • I got this sometime ago for my girlfriend, who is dyslexic. Unfortunately, despite weeks of trying, it still couldn't decipher her Yorkshire accent so it never got used again. Fail for me, I'm afraid.
  • I have used DNS version 9 and wasn't convinced with the quality despite 2 weeks of daily usage and training.
I don't know how much the new version is, is there anyone around who can compare recognition accuracy from 9.0 to the current version? Thx
  • Yes, I am using pen and paper before I even type on my computer.

Sometimes the best tool resides outside your computer.
  • Yes I use Dragon Naturally and love it! It is a GREAT product.
  • it would be great if there was some Wordpress plugin to integrate DNS with auto-posting on a blog.. or maybe it does work easily, I just need to figure it out. Havent used DNS in years, though it was impressive a few years ago I remember.
  • OK I am going to have to re-install mine and start training!
  • I've used Dragon since it came out. This 11.5 version is great if you take the time to train it, the more you use it, the better it gets.

I still keep an earlier version on board because my Sony Voice recorder is compatible, I can, literally be at the beach and dictate, take it home, plug it in and push a button, when it is done, I have a document which needs a little cleanup but, it has saved a lot of time.

NOT as good for my style for some creative work, but, once trained, it is good for script writing too.

I find it to be a useful tool.

  • Wow this thread is still going, only thought 1/2 people would have this. Overall impression is that it is good and worth the money but a few worrying reviews here.... Will probably try it out in a few weeks.
  • i never used DNS.. does Dragon Naturally Speaking have the ability to transcribe MP3's?
    • [1] reply
  • DNS will serve you as well as you train the software, there is a learning curve to be aware of and like most it seems that I think better when I am typing. And also like some I used it for 3 of 4 weeks and went back to typing.

I will get it out here shortly however and see what I can come up with, this thread has inspired me.

    Thanks,

    Joel
  • Been using it for over a year now. It has saved me countless hours. Now I find it hard to type for long in fact.

All my content creation and product creation is done on it.

I would recommend getting a good mic with noise cancellation to improve its accuracy. Anything in the $100 to $150+ range will be good to go.
    • [1] reply
    • Good advice here - Mic quality is a big factor, as is mic placement...
  • This product is priceless and has been a god send for me as a content writer.
  • My Dad uses Dragon to write reports and books. It is one hell of a software. Love it!
  • Hi Ron
I use it all the time...probably one of the best pieces of software that I have ever bought..however, as I am from London and have a bit of a cockney accent I do have to read through the type as I go along, as sometimes the words come out totally different.

But the speech training software does get better the more it gets used to your voice.
All in all a great piece of software that should be part of any marketers arsenal.

  • I haven't used Dragon Naturally Speaking before, but it sounds like a good way to just literally get all of your thoughts out on paper in a stream of verbal consciousness!

How accurate is it at recording what you're saying?
  • can someone tell me whether dns can be used with $20 headphone? I dont want to buy $500 headset which they recommend.
  • I've used it on and off for a while. I initially needed it for the times my hands and wrists aren't working well but it is great for article writing too.

If someone could make it play nicely with Chrome and open office I would be unbelievably happy.

    • I love Tim Naturally speaking.

It works great - I simply record my product, then hand it off to my assistant, and she gets it back to me in a few days and I make final changes.

Works a lot better than some silly software program and best of all I don't have to worry about making it perfect, stopping for punctuation, etc
  • Ditto, same problem.
  • had some kind of seizure... still correcting the multi-posts.
  • Ok, I think this is the final post to delete. Many apologies for all that!
  • I read about Dragon naturally speaking software from Robert Plank's blog post here and im impresses with it.

Its very useful==>How to Write One Article Every Day for The Rest of Your Life
  • The one I use is pricey, but worth it.

It comes with a Dragon NaturallySpeaking compatible Bluetooth right in the box.

Not only do I use the Bluetooth for my Dragon, I use it for my computer my Skype and anything else on my computer. It's a wonderful product.

They also make a special tape recorder that is compatible with Dragon. That way it can type from your dictation into the tape recorder when you're not near your computer. ( I don't have that yet.)
    • [1] reply
    • This can be done with any decent quality recorder. Nothing special is needed.

    • I suck at writing Ron. In high school the teacher would say - " I want you to write a book report" and I would say - "That's ok I'll just take the zero"

But seriously I have dragon and I got it to get myself to try article marketing as I just can't get motivated to write that much. But with dragon I can see myself writing full ebooks and tons of articles. Unfortunately dragon won't work on my outdated pc, not enough resources. A new pc is just around the corner and I will be going full blast with dragon soon I hope.
    • My friend uses DNS. He says it took him a while to train DNS and there were times when he felt he couldn't use the software. Well, his patience has paid off. He writes articles faster than I do, so I'm thinking of buying the software in the near future.

I've tried using the built-in speech recognition software that Windows 7 has. It just made me want to pull my hair out. :p
  • After getting carpel tunnel I am seriously looking to buy nuance dragon speak.
  • I started using it, the trick is to train it.
