MailChimp - Evil Popup - Is it that Evil?

Hey All,
I am building a mailing list for my newsletter using techniques I've learned reading this forum (thank you), and I'm debating about whether or not to use MailChimp's evil popup mode for the signup.

I offer a free guide to go with the signup (again something I learned here which has helped me to build my list - so thank you again) but I'm wondering if evil popup mode is too "rude".

Does anyone have any general data on whether or not "in-your-face" signups for mailing lists are successful or if they turn-off potential customer? Naturally I'd still promote my free guide on the evil popup as well.

Thanks in advance!
David

popups can increase conversion. do a delay if you have an option, like 5-7 seconds.

there is no substitute for testing, just have to test to find out.

I'm wondering why anyone concerned about "rude" would think about using something with "evil" right in the name of it.

Evil? Only heretics would call popups evil...non split testing heretics that is.

CD...never trust ANYONE who speaks in absolutes...for such is the call sign of deceit.

@ the OP...I put 120-180 second delay on mine...take a look at your sites residence time average and set it to pop up a few seconds before most people bounce.

Move it forwards or backwards as a means of testing what captures the most leads...its a slow process.

I'd assume the popup mode in question is "evil" because of the way it pops up, probably in a way that bypasses popup blockers or otherwise doesn't respect the wishes and desires of the user.

I recently went to a website that let me read an article for 15 seconds, then popped up an opt-in box over it and wouldn't let me dismiss the popup without opting in.

I'm betting that popup converts real good, considering everyone who gets it wants to finish reading the article. I'll bet it wins every split test in the world compared to any popup that actually lets you say "no," because a nonzero quantity of people will in fact say "no."

But my psychic powers tell me your open rate, CTR, and conversion on that list will suck.

I don't have a huge problem with popups. I do not personally like exit pops. And I don't personally use any kind of popup. But when a popup appears over a website, I know for a fact that I actually respond to it.

But I've also noticed a high correlation between people who say "use whatever converts best no matter what people say they like" - and people who open multiple threads complaining about serial refunders and frozen PayPal accounts.

I do not believe this is a coincidence. I believe the two things are related.
