I seem to see this word pop up everywhere lately but (and I don't know whether it's just from growing up on an isolated continent) I've no idea what a Maven is...

Anyone wanna enlighten me?

    Hi Andrew,

I'll see if I can shed some light my friend!

My understanding of "Maven" or "Mavin" is along the lines of a Guru... It's someone who is a "Trusted" expert in their field (much like myself )

A leader who seeks out and passes his/her knowledge onto others and one that never stops learning in their journey.

Sounds like a "female" sounding name..

I will be slightly weirded out if a guy calls himself the "marketing maven". Marketing guru is ok, but i think maven should be left for the ladies.

Whats the latest movie you watched? Anything good?

Funny..the word "maven" alone didn't ring a bell...until I saw you reference to "Marketing Maven"...Which I've actually heard before....however, that was a long a$$ time ago....and it was in reference to someone being like the local authority in a given field or on a given subject.

"Maven" is Yiddish for expert or know-it-all.

I'll never forget the time my husband came home from work and asked me, "What does it mean, 'schlepp'?"

It cracked me up, because his boss was Irish.

In certain portions of the country and in certain industries, people of all ethnic and religious backgrounds use Yiddish words because they are so vivid and colorful.

      Chutzpah
      Goniff
      Schmuck
      Kerflooey
      Tchotchke

      Etc.

And by the way, "maven" is not either masculine or feminine.

      Riight, now I feel better

      Kevin,

It must be a Ma-be-n in Katakana right?

To me the word sounds like some kind of exotic bird..

And Yiddish huh.. Who'd have thunk?

      Alright, back to work
