Just wondering ...

How many pages of content does your average website have?
Do people still build the small 3-4 pages adsense micro sites? or are people building bigger sites with more content instead?

    Micro sites still exist.

But the answer to your question is really more to the point of, "what purpose does the website hope to serve?"

It is very similar to the question of, "how many words should an article have?"

The answer is, "as many words as are needed to accomplish the article's goal, communicate a story, or provide a solution, but no more than that."

So to your question of how many pages a website should have? As many as are needed and no more.

I have sites out there that are making money that amount to "no more than one page", and I have sites with thousands of pages.

Don't ask how big a site should be.

Ask what purpose the site will serve, then provide as many pages as are needed to serve that purpose.

More content is better. You can then use internal linking to your advantage to point to your important pages.
Many people don't realize internal linking can be more powerful than external backlinks, as search engines sort of consider every page as a separate entity.

I don't do that, the new fashion is auto blogging with spinned articles.

I would always start a new website with at least 3-4 pages of content/posts and then you will want to add to that every week or two. Consistency is key as it tells the search engines you are regularly updating your site with fresh content.

I believe more content increases the sample space for keywords. Sometimes you do not know what exactly the potential client shall use as a search term, with lots of quality content you are likely to cover many possible search terms. The search engines also love fresh content implying you have to increment your content regularly to boost your search engine rank.

The main difference between niche sites and bigger sites is the time investment. Bigger sites, of course, require much more time.

With niche sites you can write 3-7 high quality keyword researched articles and leave them as it is. But you won't make money immediately, nor with the bigger sites.

It takes time for Google to index those niche website pages. Still, niche sites are better if you want to make money more quickly. And don't go crazy with backlinks at least for 2-3 weeks with your article being already indexed.

Content is king. Google like hot new content. Take 5 to 10 keywords in your
niche market. Make 5 to 10 pages on the keywords.

I aim for at least 5 different pages at the least. I've found these sites definitely rank better than one page wonders.
