How Do You Sell A Service

Hi,

What methods have you found successful for selling a service? For instance, say I want to offer a service that makes slideshows for business people, or a backlinking service for small businesses, or an language translation service.

Where have you found is a good, cheap or free place to advertise services?

I'd be grateful to know.

Kind regards,

John

    I did it for years.

I set up my own domain and sold the service from there.

Then I SEO'ed the websites, did article marketing, forum marketing, social marketing, press releases, and paid advertising in mailing lists and on websites, and I did a bit of PPC advertising.

My happy customers drove word-of-mouth advertising for me as well.

      Thanks TPW. Most appreciated.

Are there any places you would recommend for advertising or listing the service for sale?

      Kind regards,

The Warriors for Hire section gets a lot of traffic. Costs $20 to post and $20 bump it back to page one when it reaches page three.

First you got find all ways of increasing the quality of your service. Don't make the prices high, it can be a big turnoff for potential customers, especially if you are just starting a business that is not developed. This is called positive marketing. This is the great way to increase your business but also the most difficult way. But it is worth it and you will get more and more customers as people start liking your service. However this alone is not enough to get you more clients. You need to get new clients everyday. This is where advertising helps. This is a simple but effective formula that will improve your business little by little.

Write blog posts on the subjects/services offered.
SEO those posts and get traffic.
If your posts are good, people will contact you for help (I have a blog where I don't offer services yet receive requests for help weekly).

On the same site, create a "how to make a slideshow" video tutorial. Offer it in exchange for readers to sign up to your email list.

Send out great emails and occassionally promote your services. Promote your services on the free video tutorial page. Promote your services in your e-mail sig.

Yes, people will learn how to create basic slideshows for free from your video tutorials. Show an example of an amazing slide show which is beyond the scope of the tutorial and suggest to contact you for that level of work.

Anyway, that's what I would do. You could probably earn some money with affiliate promotions and/or advanced video tutorial courses on creating slideshows as well.

Become the slide show expert, give away some good stuff, and you can make money one way or another as long there's demand for slideshows (I'm not sure there is, I'm using your proposal as an example). Good luck.

YouTube seems to be a good place for advertising businesses and services these days, as it gets a lot of traffic. People are making a lot of money there. Craigslist is good, too. You can advertise in your local area if it's a locally-based service. You can also advertise in other cities around the world if you're an online-based service provider who can work with people anywhere.

Email, cold calling, youtube, blog posts, ezine articles

All are free and depending on the service you provide some will be more efficient than others.

Although not free, adwords can be a good option depending on what service you're providing.

If you do some extensive keyword research especially for terms including buy, or purchase, you'll instantly be targeting people already looking to buy so could expect some good sales from some of these ads alone, from there you could start seeing many retuning clients as well. I did this recently and had a surpising amount of sales with little outlay for ad costs.

You can sell a smaller version of your service on somewhere like fiverr. Then you can upsell to any customers you get there.

IE: "I will write you a 300 word article for your website"

After you complete the order, you inform the buyer that you have additional services their business might need and that you are more expert at.

You can start a thread in the 'Warriors for Hire' section of this forum. It will cost you $20 though, but most people would say that it is well worth it.

You can make posts on threads in the 'Wanted - Members Looking To Hire You'.

First I would decide which of the three services you describe are you best suited to market first, meaning what do you know the most about.
Then learn as much as you can in that area while you set up your site your videos or how ever you market your service.

Make money with one then focus on another service when you have mastered the first.

I suggest the following methods to start with:

    * Target high traffic forums giving useful advice. Dont spam forums just help people out. Build up respect and become an expert that people turn to for advice.
    * Answer questions on Yahoo Answers with your backlink
    * Setup your own Website and improve SEO on your target keyworks. Link build using Blog Comments, Social Bookmark, Link wheels, Forum Profiles, Article Marketing
    * Advertise on Ebay, FIVERR
    * Advertise on Digital Points , Warrior Forum and other related forums in Services Area
    * Use Twitter and Facebook to promote your product to thousands of users in your niche
    * Setup a Facebook page targeting your Niche area and provide useful advice
    * Advertise services in Free Classified Sites
    * Print out flyers and post to companies in your local area or mail out
    * Advertise in your local newspaper
    * Use PPC Google Ads to get targeted traffic to your website

    Based on experience,

    1. Find a Forum related to your service (you don't necessarily need a website but if u do, it's all good)

    2. Help normal forum members solve issues relating to your intended service

    3. Keep on resolving their issues (raking up post counts, rep & thanks)

    4. Then launch your service in that forum after they've familiarized themselves with u

    5. Keep it real, down-2-earth and TELL THEM WHEN 2 EXPECT THE DELIVERY

    6. Don't try to impress them by giving a 'speedy' service (I've found out that quality is way way better than speed online)

    7. If you can finish the service in 48hrs, tell them 5days expected delivery (Believe me, they don't want to know if ur gf broke up with u! Once you start missing delivery dates then they start asking all sorts of questions)

    8. Lastly, WHATEVER happens, let them know - Always Communicate (that gives them peace of mind)

Besides, if you stated that you'll offer refunds in ur service and a customer rightfully asks for one, PROMPTLY give that refund WITHOUT queestions. This gives em confidence that if ever anything goes wrong, at least, they#ll get their money back!

    Cheers

Pretty much what I was going to say haha. You want to focus on building a good rep so that you have returning clients. I'd also say that classified ads work quite well as well because lots of corporate structures visit these places to pick up stuff pretty cheap (you'd be surprised who does this).

They key here is how you promote your website and the traffic which comes to your website because of your promotion.

If that traffic is highly targeted you will have sale and if it is not, there is very limited chance that you make a single sale.

So getting the targeted traffic is the key to get sale.

You will want to have case studies and testimonials lined up. If you dont mind doing cold calling, you could this also. Run direct mail. Of course put up a website and generate leads. Then pitch them on your services. Works every time. Make sure you have a list of questions to ask them once you call them and discuss your services.

You could try being active on social media and spreading your links out to your network. If it's in Facebook, post it on your wall. If it's on Twitter, just Tweet about it. You can also ask your friends to help you with the advertisement. I know this is pretty "beginner"-like, but sometimes, the straightforward stuff are the most effective.

wakins is pretty much spot-on. Over-deliver and provide good support. That's all there is to it, really.

As far as bringing in the sales - doing what you're doing now is a good start. Posting consistently on forums can bring in some decent sales from your sig alone. Then, when you're ready to take it to the next level, start offering your services in the proper section of the forum(s).

Sounds like you can go commercial and charge a monthly fee. In fact my family was thinking about taking all our pictures and making a slide show or have them placed on dvds. Great idea work it.

The methods can change drastically based on the example. For example, link services for small businesses is a niche already saturated on the web, so going local (PPC, or even offline) might make more sense. Find local forums, post a gig to craiglist, etc. Attend local business groups/meetings. Find a gorilla costume and and hold up a sign saying "I am your missing link" with your website address on it at a busy intersection in a commercial district...

If the niche isn't already completely saturated on the web, any number of on page / off page SEO tactics will work (I won't list them again).

You are probably looking for online strategies, I know, but I thought I'd throw a few more out there just in case.

You can promote your service in the WSO section or warrior for hire section, depending on your service.

Make sure that you are crystal clear about what you offer, how to package it, how to market it.
