What do you use to convert files between doc & PDF?

19 replies
Hi!

I've been trying to find a desktop program to convert my ebooks/other writings from doc format (word) to PDF and from PDF to word (not so important). But I just can't find one that would work smoothly and have no troubles.

Any recommendations?

      I do the same with OpenOffice, one click of a button and it's done.

    I too had this problem when I started out way back in 2007... The solution is simple, like the last couple of posts have said...

    Save as --> PDF --> That's it!

    Just be sure you also save it in .doc or .docx format so you can go back and make any changes if need be.

    Best of luck!

      I used to do the same thing; however, I think I had problems in the begining (a few years ago now) in that the word version I was using didn't have an option to convert to PDF,

      I was able to go to the microsoft website though and download an add-on that allowed me to do it. So if you find your version of word doesn't have that feature I would go to microsoft and try and find that addon.

      These days though I tend to just create documents that I know will need to be converted into PDF, in openoffice.

    Yes, OpenOffice or Word if you want to go Word to PDF. But if you want to convert from PDF to Word there are a few free web based offerings online.

      If you are using word to save a document as a pdf make sure you have the newest version or you grabbed special plugins because older versions of word will not keep your hyperlinks when you turn the document into a pdf. I learned this the hard way when I gave out a free pdf on learning to play poker. It was meant to generate a list and possibly get me a couple affiliate commissions in the process but for the first couple weeks it did nothing. Then I realized that the hyperlinks weren't linking anywhere any more.

      OpenOffice is the easiest and the best, because it preserves hyperlinks, which, some postscript printer based convertyers (obviously) do not.

    I'll agree with people about OpenOffice for the .doc to .pdf. You can even export it directly as a .pdf without having the .doc version. As for going from .pdf to .doc, you can try:

    I use "PDF Creator" which is free from Sourceforge and works with any program. You just print to it like you would to your printer and its done. Being open source its also free which is great!

    I tried to find an app to convert PDF to Word a few years ago when I lost the original Word document, but I couldn't find anything that preserved the formatting well. In the end I just copied and pasted the text, recreated the tables and graphics. Not ideal, but it was quicker and better than any conversion program that I tried.
