Amazon Affiliate question - niche keyword

Hi all,

I put together a few websites (in my signature) about 6 months ago, but I was a complete newbie back then and didn't do my research on keywords etc.

I am planning on starting again, but I have a few questions:

- as the Amazon Affiliate scheme has a cookie length of 24 hours, should you be optimising for keywords that include 'buy'? My guess is that you need to target those that are looking to buy immediately. If you don't, then how else would you attract traffic willing to purchase quickly?

- one of my websites attracted lots of traffic for a specific home cinema system (after writing a long review), which retails around $300, but although I had lots of click throughs, there were never any sales. Could this be down to the niche?

Thanks,

Jodie

I wouldn't go after the "buy" phrases....Actually, specific product names and product category keywords will go after the buying traffic. Use keyword tools to pinpoint them...There are thousands of them!

I would guess it has something to do with your website layout....If you PM me your web address, I will take a quick look at it and give you my input.

    Hi Jodie,

Sorry for chiming in a week late, but I thought you might also like to know that you can actually increase the affiliate cookie duration from 24 hours to 90 days when you can get your referred traffic to add the product to their Amazon shopping cart. With more expensive products that typically take more convincing/research for people to buy, I've found that extending the cookie can mean the difference between zero sales and decent conversions.

There are actually a number of ways to get someone to add a product you promote to their Amazon shopping cart.

    1. The easiest and most obvious is for them to simply do this after they visit the Amazon product page through your affiliate link, but actually getting them to do it can be another problem.

    2. Some products on Amazon won't let you initially see the price of the product (typically when the merchant has a good deal on it). To actually see the price, you have to add the product to your shopping cart. If you specially pick your products like this, you can give your traffic a call to action to add the product to their Amazon cart to find out the current special price.

    3. Amazon offers affiliates another way that a lot of people don't know about to send traffic directly Amazon to prompt them to add the product to their shopping cart. This can be accomplished with direct product affiliate links or you can use a more sophisticated on-site shopping cart store. Most affiliates will have problems trying to implement something like this on their own, so the best I can recommend for this purpose is a WordPress plugin. I have developed one of these, which I personally use and make available for others, but there are likely other plugins out there that can do something similar. From my experiences, I feel like this method converts the best when you are dealing with more expensive products that people need more time to decide to buy.

Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

As Michael said. targeting the actual model name and number is best because that means the person has already gone through most of the research phase and are mainly looking for confirmation that they chose the right product. if you can give that to them then you will probably get the sale.
