I know, I haven't reached a 1000 post multiple right now but I'd like to propose some advice which I posted in response to a question earlier and that persons thread got nuked (they posted it in the wrong section). I thought my response might be useful to a few people just starting out (and maybe remind a few others) about how to take a logical approach to your online business.

So, forgive me if this is a bit indulgent, but hopefully it will be useful to a few people......

Here's some advice for free:

1 - Think about who your target audience is.

2 - Think about what their problem/need/desire is.

3 - Think about what you most want them to do when they find your site.

4 - Create some pre-selling copy and a clear proposition that ties-in their need and your most wanted action from them.

5 - Do some research into which terms they are searching with and which sites are currently giving them what they will find and want.

6 - Check out any newsworthy events, people and information that will be of interest to them and that you can create a connection to your proposition from. (think along the lines of you are selling life coaching and Tiger Woods is having relationship problems and it's in the news - you create some content which covers how life coaching could've had him living a balanced life and never run into those problems, but could also help him put things into perspective and regain his life as fast and easily as possible)

7 - Create a short report that hits the biggest interest areas of your target audience.

8 - Write some press releases about the major benefits of your products/services and how they relate to the newsworthy items your research came up with (you can be very creative here and ALWAYS have a lot to say)

9 - Create some short videos and articles which highlight and briefly cover main areas of interest to your target audience.

10 - create a plan for constant content creation and publishing. it's ok to reuse content and turn an article into a short video and use your new content to create press releases (i.e new video exposes how to live a happy life), so that you always have content waiting to go out.

There are many tools which will let you schedule content publishing (you can even just create draft posts in Wordpress and just publish them when the time is right), so you can easily systemise and automate a lot of things ( think rss sharing, social bookmarking, press release publishing, video distribution, article publishing etc. etc.)

11 - Work your plan.

If all you do is create regular press releases, videos and content but effectively distribute/publish it - you don't need any of the popular link blasting systems.

The biggest tool you need is your brain and to plan your strategy.

I just wanted to bump this thread, may I? I'm surprised that it's gone unnoticed. I mean it deserves more thanks, comments, and a lively conversation.

Andy, these are great tips and I believe that they are not only for beginners. These are something every marketer should be reminded about from time to time.

For example, for me (and I'm quite experienced in several departments of IM), 10 is a great reminder today. I've published tons of articles, and why don't I just go make short videos and ppt presentations out of them? I will

PS. Wordpress schedule thing is neat and great. Everyone should use it.

    Hi Onora,

    Thanks for your kind words.

Yes, it's common-sense but yet there's so much information around that's appealing to people looking for quick push-button fix to getting rich overnight.

Creating a decent online income is actually not that hard but requires some thought, some planning and consistent action.

Sounds simple right? apparently it's much harder than it seems just to take ANY consistent action.

      I agree.

It's disheartening to see people doing the BSO Dance.

Find a Bright Shiny Object, play a while, then jump to another, play a while, then find a....

      You get the idea.

A year later, they've spent tons of money on BSOs and have nothing to show for it.

Then they proclaim that Internet Marketing/MMO doesn't work.

If they took the same year, worked consistently and adjusted their course as needed, they'd have a much different result.

I believe that your twelve points are super. Sadly, that will not be read by many that are new. Most think that there is a magic recipe. All they have to do is wave a wand and sales will come pouring in. Wish that were so. Basically, hard work is what success requires.

Andy, you said it so well.

Just keeping it simple is the way to go. If people just followed what you have laid out and tested and tweaked and then moved to the next level, then they could save themselves a lot of stress and wasted time.

Nice advice. As the old saying goes -- slow and steady wins the race. The fact is that 97% of all failures online come from people throwing in the towel too early or racing about trying the latest and greatest new "thing" in order to make their millions. Instead, you just need to be slow and steady and make steady progress.

This is a really good simple plan you put together.

However, there are many newbies who need to learn the fundamentals before they can implement a plan this wonderfully simple. They need to know about keyword research, driving traffic, where and how to deliver a digital product, etc.. These are just a few of the skills they need.

If they want to make money online the first thing they will have to do is learn the basics. Once they have those down, they will be able to take advantage of many of the opportunities presented to them, including your beautifully simple money making plan.

Like all the other Newbies before I am thankful for posts like yours, Andy.
But there is one question that concerns me, and maybe the others can answer that, too: Is it really possible to be successful here without those "popular link blasting systems" and without getting affiliates to write reviews?
This seemes to be one of the central points here, to connect and become part of a network, to prove oneself and then become successful. Like it was said in many threads - one big and important part is the way you organize your project to get sold, not the content in particular.
I know that is one way but I'd love to hear from a few people that they made it like you wrote it. Because without the possibility to buy yourself in and to outsource I'd like to be successful, too. As for me it then could take some time to get there - as long as I get there one day.

    Thanks!

      Absolutely!

You don't need that stuff at all.

The reason people use those is because they are looking for the path of least resistance and they're not passionate about their niche and/or business, so they think they have to use such things because otherwise there's nothing for them to say that others will care about.

Remember - those methods are being sold to the IM masses - which is made up mostly of newbies and people wanting everything quick and easy and free.

Many people don't take their online business seriously. It's more of a "I'll have a play and see if I can make some money" deal, rather than a serious business, so they don't want to spend money and they are not looking at building a long term sustainable business.

Making money online is really easy - but ironically, the harder you work - the easier it is. If you're lazy then you can make it really hard. If you have a great work ethic and you put the effort in, then you make it easy.

For example, you could just find a highly searched keyword in a niche you are passionate and then go buy 100 domains and make each one focus on one related keyword to your main one and point 99 of them at one main site which sells something and has a backend with several products. The all you'd need to do is each day write 3 or 4 articles and post them to your sites. This way you'd have new content going to every site on a monthly basis and if you integrated a social bookmarking, twitter sharing and facebook posting tool so that your new content was leveraged automatically, and you shared your rss feed for each site, you could build a very powerful network which was constantly updated and gradually making your main domain more and more powerful.

Anyone could do that and build a long term valuable network and a mass of high ranking sites, making sales and building a list from the main site along the way, and even charging for links and advertising across the network.

It requires zero tools, zero outsourcing, anyone could do it and it would build long term revenue aswell as short term.

When you started making enough money - you could then outsource and rinse and repeat in a new niche.

Very simple, and pretty much guaranteed to work for anyone regardless of the niche.

But people don't want to have to take action every day - they want push-button easy money, so that's what others sell them. Well, that's what they say they're selling.

This is an AWESOME way to put it.

Most people who really treat this like a business and put in the time and planning are gonna make money- period.

On the other hand, people who say "I've been doing IM for 6 months and never made a DIME!" but were only "working" 20 minutes a day (in other words just hanging out on Facebook or an IM forum) may never make a dime if they dont start really building their business.

Basic plan + work = success. If you follow the basic plan Andy laid out above and work at it, you'll have success.

This advice deserves a Huge Thanks! This guy just pointed out helpful points when doing Internet Marketing that suit to just about every niche out there. It simply teaches us to make our IM approach more engaging to both customers, online readers/visitors and search engine. I do agree about constant content creation which is not only important for your site, PR or web reputation but most importantly to your online readers and valuable consumers. In a way, these people are judging you and your business on what you can provide them...

Yes for sure on both counts.

You can use a plugin like Onlywire to automate the bookmarking of any new content so that can be on auto-pilot.

Working the plan can be the most difficulty part to this entire process. It take time for your plan to bear fruit, and many of us want immediate results.

I would add that we need to set very realistic expectations for success, and commit ourselves to working one plan at a time, and stop jumping from idea to idea.

Aah - I would be careful.

Don't be in such a hurry to buy junk links. I thought you meant that you would manually do them or outsource them.

I would advise against buying cheap mass link packages for things like this.

Thanks - to be honest, I've sort of got to the point where I think people have access to all the information they want and aren't really that interested in hearing yet another person give them advice.

It's hard to be heard over the crowd these days. I used to blog a lot but after so many times of hearing "you said this - but I heard someone else say the opposite, so I'm still confused" I stopped blogging as it felt unproductive.

I love helping people, but only if they want help and are not just looking for more advice not to follow.
