Quick tip to reduce unsubscribe rate.

Ok apart from the obvious one of giving GOOD VALUE content, Here's one quick thing you can try that I've found works for me.

Give multiple bribes.

Yep so instead of giving one free report, one video etc, give 3!

And don't send it out all at once. Send one every day or every 2 days.

This prevents people from signing up to your list and instantly unsubscribing just to get the freebie.

Better yet, you can even have a ongoing newsletter as your opt-in bribe. That way they are GIVING you permission to regularly contact them, and they will expect that.

    Hmmm....

I thought the main idea of getting sign ups was offering a valuable newsletter in the first place.

I'm not sure how you arrived at this, but from experience this may not make that much of a difference...

But of course testing would be the only way to know in each case.

As a list builder, one of my goals is to INCREASE my
unsubscribe rate (within reason) and not use silly
      gimmicks to reduce it.

      Why?

I only want people on my list who really want to be on it
and are most suited to my style and what I have to offer.

If the subscriber only wants the freebie and unsubscribes
      later, then let them.

      Dedicated to mutual success,

      Shaun

Totally agree with shaun and limerickbob. You do want to build a list of buyers.

I did test this out, and it worked for me. This was a niche outside of IM, and what I did was to simply take parts of an eBook, and send small snippets of it each day for 10 days. Throughout each email, I had links back to my sales page. So now instead of just one chance to make the sale, I had 10! And that dramatically increased the sales I made compared to just giving the ebook away for free at the start.

So yeah test it out for yourself and see what happens. It may work, it may not! =)

I like that idea, going to try it. Much easier than writing an ecourse from scratch. It's like a mini course. By the law of reciprocation, it may increase the clicks to the sales page. I'll test it.

I appreciate this thread. I give 2 free gifts to subscribers, and a third on the welcome page. I can see now that I am trying to bribe them, because I don't want them to unsubscribe. Tim made a good point, maybe subscribers are just in it for the freebies, and won't buy.

Have you ever tried to start a fire with damp wood? With enough time and energy, to say nothing of lighter fluid and matches, you can generate smoke. But if you depend on that fire for cooking and heating, it's a race to see if you starve or freeze first.

Most people have a hard time understanding just how big the gap from 'free' to 'paid' really is for a lot of people until they try to monetize a list of freebie seekers...

Don't think of your list as a net that you want nothing to escape from. Think of it more like a filter, where you keep what's valuable and let the rest go free.

If you think logically about this, the answer is obvious. If you have to bribe people over 2-3 days with multiple free pieces of content just to be on your list, do you really think they will buy something/take the action you want in the future?

Sorry but it's likely the only advantage of these type of people on your list is for bragging rights on the size of the list!

    Great stuff here.

I'm actually going to start building a list myself, I am pretty new to list building but I see some gold in lists.

Isn't this all a form of bribery to keep them subscribed until they decide to buy.
I responded to the original poster who talked about giving multiple bribes to avoid them unsubscribing. If you have to do this my point stands they were not worth having in the first place.

I don't think it's bribery as such no. If it is, your thinking about it the entirely wrong way. You are providing value (hopefully) to a group of individuals who will then (hopefully) feel the value you have provided together with what you are offering them to buy exceeds the price they are being asked to pay for it.

          No offence taken

I think your missing my point though. What I am alluding to if you have to give away so much free stuff just to get them to leave their email address, what chances have you got to get them to buy anything?

As always, the perceived value of your content gets them to sign up, and the actual value of your content makes them stay.

Testing new ways of delivering that content to increase your conversions is always a great idea, thanks for the share!

send everyday or every 2 days is annoying .
It would be best that you only send twice per week . Send too often may not a good idea because you may get a opposite effect.
People may take it as spam mail.

Well, think about your own reactions to the email marketing that you get. In the IM space, there are many very aggressive marketers sending multiple emails, many of them every day. Personally, even though I like to keep in the loop, i just don't have so much time for all of that- I don't care HOW many freebies, etc. they offer, I just unsubscribe. Its the quality of the info and recommendations that get me to stay, and eventually purchase, not all the freebies. These may be nice of course, but no need to overdo. I appreciate a focused, quality effort more than anything else, spaced out over a period of time. Emphasis on S-P-A-C-E! After awhile, those too frequent mailers and and aggressive marketers, too much, even too many freebies- who can digest it all??!! seem like SHARKS. Let me outta here!

There are a good handful of people that I keep up with, and no, not all of them are big gurus- some give freebies, and others don't. But what I appreciate is their originality and helpfulness, and other traits that make them stand out from the hordes. Because once you sign up for a few, unless you diligently prune your list on a regular basis there will be HORDES!
