Adsense Placement -- Risky to Put at Top of Page?

I'm thinking about placing an Adsense ad (Ad Links 468 x 15) at the top of my page -- just under the top banner and to the far right. I suppose in some ways it might resemble the site navigation (located to the far left), although I'm using a different color font, and the ads are clearly preceded by the Google name.

I've had plenty of people tell me this practice is risky (getting banned by Google Adsense or losing position in the serps). But I still see lots of sites (big sites) doing it. I suppose it's possible that some sites generate so much Adsense revenue that Google looks the other way?

The fact is, I think placing Adsense at the top of the page is actually more helpful to visitors than not. If my site doesn't have what people are looking for, the links at top make it easy for them to go somewhere else.

Do any of you think it's risky to put Adsense links at the top of the page?

    Here are the placements that Google recommends presented as a heat map saying which positions are best. Have a look. But also remember that Google are sometimes contradicting themselves saying one thing and doing another:

      I'm with you --Google is notorious for contradicting themselves. It's funny to see them suggest moving ads "above the fold" -- when clearly they have taken action to discourage that very practice:

      I suppose it's a matter of degree -- and trying to decide what Google thinks is an acceptable balance between content and ad space. Text links have always worked really well for me, especially if located at the top of the page. I suppose I can cross my fingers that Google will at least give me a warning if they don't like it.

    I don't think there is a risk in placing the ads at top. After all you will have different colours and fonts so why be afraid?

    Adsense link ads have never worked for me well.

    You'd better work your way to place a large leatherboard right in the header of your site.

      Interesting....my small text link ads always seem to outperform the larger ad formats. But of course I haven't tried putting anything a the top.

    Hi mate,

    There is no harm to keep your Adsense code at the top of your page.
    Because, you will be placing the Ad separately. It looks like Ad separately.
    Visitor will visit the Ad, if he is interested with that Ad.
