I have been an aff for sites in the romance game. Let me tell you that most customers are lonely OLD men. Well, 60 is the average age. They do have some money. However, sites are selling a pipe dream to the codgers and that is a bit heavy on the pipe. It is a good idea to know who your audience is. Find places that are popular with geezers. Most are OLD, ugly, a bit on the heavy side, nerdy, and have some money. Hey, enough to pay for the membership anyway.

If you need traffic, start Posting articles in your blog section (about once a section), with your target keywords.

My site is targetting people in Slovenia (Europe). Yeah, SEO is good and I will start doing it, but here I need to learn what to do and how. A good mentor would be great, maybe someone is interested? Maybe we can find a win-win opportunity? I don't know. If someone sees an opportunity, just PM me.

I'd like to invest my last few hundred bucks in paid advertising, but I want to invest it smartly - so that I get in return more than I invested. I know that's totally possible, because my competition is already doing it, you just have to know where and how to advertise. That's why someone who has experience would be great!

Use these usernames to log in: 'male1' OR 'male2' OR 'female1' OR 'female2' . The pass is always the same: 'user' . male1 and female1 don't have a paid subscription, male2 and female2 have a paid subscription. The site is still in testing mode. The payment system will be completed in a week or two. Do whatever you want on the site, hack it, destroy it, I don't care - if you manage to destroy or hack something, just tell me how you did it so that I can correct the problem.

Anyway, thanks for your advice, I will consider every option you mentioned. The problem here is that I just don't know what will work and what won't work and my budget is limited as hell.

So, dear friends and blessed fellas, I'd like to find a mentor who will teach me how to make some serious money out of a dating site. I'm open to partnerships and other ideas. I'm gonna do whatever it takes to succeed. Whoever will help me on my endeavour, I promise, I will give twice as much back. May it be money, knowledge, whatever.. Right now I don't have much to offer, but in a year or two I'll build an empire and that's when you will get a lot in return. If anybody would like to help me out or partner with me, I'm ready to do whatever you tell me to do - just show me how to make a living out of a dating site like mine as I don't have money to learn by myself on my own mistakes.

If you can find marketers who are in the same niche as you, try getting some of them to do a mail-out for you, like an adswap, but you pay instead of swapping e-mails.

You might look here in the Warrior Classifieds section for someone in your niche.

There are a few other similar places on the net, but I can't call the names at the moment.

Facebook Ads will suit your needs nicely. You can specifically target single professional females, who are looking for males, who live in a particular city in Slovenia, who have a specific interest or hobby.

With the budget you have, it would probably be best to focus on a target market segment and grow from there. It's ok if your site only has 1000 users, as long as they interact with each other you'll be doing very well.

Slovenian ppc traffic on Facebook and Admob is super cheap. I suggest you start ppc campaigns there. Make sure to have a campaign per each 5 year age group. You should do great as long as you adjust your ads. Try to target two groups like 35-40 y.o. and 40-45.

In my experience, facebook advertising sucks.... of course it could have been how I was doing it, but Ive found most people there are entertainment seekers and NOT buyers. You will most likely have a really tough time convincing them to enter into some kind of paid membership agreement (the most difficult thing to sell. Period)

Now... this leads us to a big problems that has been brought up time an time again on WF and bears repeating now. DO NOT commit yourself to a long term project until you are sure you have prospects and have tested it...

This sounds like you have entered into this project with absolutely no idea if it would work, no customer base, no marketing plan or anything! Yikes....

Thats OK though, just send me a PM I think that I can give you an idea that might just work...

OH, are these people that you will be dealing with fluent in english? If not, I may still have an idea but it will take lots more work on your part.

Well, I think your niche is really broad and you need some big dollars to target that market. You can try Facebook ads, perhaps you can also try to advertise on pof.com. Pretty good idea too using girls promoting your site with youtube videos. Good luck on your venture.

As with your dating site it is important that you target the correct Demographic. For example in your situation it would be young people from 18-35 in general.

So you have to do some research to find where these people spend their online time mostly. And then advertise in those websites/channels/groups etc. I think you are getting the picture.

I haven't been in the dating niche myself, but I think given the target market, forum posting could work quite well for you.

Find a few forums where people from your demographic congregate and just add a signature to your profile and make helpful posts, don't do any blatant self-promotion.

Pick a catchy phrase to use as the link in your signature and you should see some traffic starting to flow to your site. Since I started doing forum posts, I found a trickle of traffic coming to my site from day 1!!

Starting a dating site is going to be very hard for you. Inactivity because of lack of members will cause lack of conversion and retention. This means you have a very low CPA to purchase traffic with.

You'll need to focus your attention to the smaller CPC networks link Bing. Adsense is way out of our reach and so will all the CPA programs.

Pretend you are an old lonely man in your country - what would they search for on the internet - go the same places , especially forums and start posting little advises and respond to their questions and make sure you have a signature with a reference to your dating site. It takes time, but its totally FREE :-)

I would say 100% the best place to start would be POF (plenty of fish) thats about as targeted as you can get in terms of traffic, plus they have really good targeting options so you can really drill down into specific demos

Yeah I have a plan, but it's just that I'd like to make money with more "legal" types of advertising, like google ads, banner ads, media buys... and all the other free types of advertising that you suggested. I'll definitely consider all the options you mentioned. I know I can convert free signups into paid memberships, but right now I don't know the exact numbers.

I think I'll try Facebook ads first as I can target single women and men from a specific country and in a specific age group. I'm assuming that Facebook ads would work the best. So I'm going with Facebook.
I'll also join some dating forums and give advice on how to meet someone on the internet. I hope people will find my info useful and click on the link in the signature.

About marketing the site... I guess it's all trial and error - test until you find an advertising method that works. That's what I'll do. I'll read, learn, try and see if it works. Sooner or later I'll find something that brings money. I'll keep you posted on my learning journey.

Well, I didn't look at your site, but most datingsites need one important thing, women/girls... and 100's of them... as long as you do not have them, you're not able to make money with it... so better concentrate first to get some momentum by getting the women/girls motivated to subscribe (and better make it free). Then you have momentum to start advertizing.

Hi,

I think you need to offer something for free first for people to get to know you and your brand. Make sure you get hold of their email address in exchange for the freebie you give them.
Once they are subscribed, follow them up with email marketing, promoting your website and enticing them with freebies and good content. Once they get to know you/your brand then they'll be more willing to spend money with you.
For free marketing/traffic traffic, go to dating forums and places where your market hangs out and post good valuable comments, make yourself known in the marketplace. Make sure your website is in your signature.
Also, perhaps make some Squidoo lenses which are also good for traffic as Squidoo is community based, so therefore another good (but under-estimated) social media hub.
Oh, and press releases.. Do some press releases- there are free ones and paid ones that you can submit too. The paid ones are excellent for getting your product out there in front of lots of people.

Yeah, you're probably right.. I was kinda thinking that perhaps trozma could have some high quality content to do with dating- such as tips or how to guides in his language- in addition to his dating site. The dating niche being as competitive as it is, I'm thinking maybe he should add things that other dating sites don't have. But you're right, he needs to have something to motivate women to register.. What about an all expenses paid dinner/date or a bottle of champs or some vouchers for clothes shopping? He could market his site by offering a chance to win something and perhaps hold a draw to pick a winner at a later date after he's started to make some money off the memberships? Not sure if that'll work but just throwing it out there...

If it's an actual dating membership site then advertising on facebook and Plenty of Fish can be good. Once you've got the metrics of how much an initial sign up is worth to you, go to a CPA network and pay on a lead basis.

I think getting people on the site will not be a problem, but what do I know, maybe I'm wrong and my plan wont work? So I'm doing everything I can to make it as good as it can be.

The site has a few hundred profiles that I got from a friend's dating site (these profiles are not active, but are there and the site looks populated with activity). When somebody pays for a membership, they also get access to the lectures section where they can find advice on meeting women or men online. I have more than 250 pages of advice for each sex, male and female. Just as Jas Kaur said, members also have a chance to win prizes, but in order to be eligible for the prize, they have to invite at least 3 friends to the site first.

My plan is to give new members free access to the lectures. Hopefully this will motivate them to sign up. Once they signup, I'll make sure that they get contacted by the opposite sex, so they will have a reason to pay for the membership.

I'm preparing a landing page that I'll use for advertising on Facebook. I'll show you how it looks like before I start my campaign on Fb.

Trozma, just a wild idea... if it took you more then a year, you probably built the site from scratch... if you're in need of money... ever thought of selling the script itself? It might be easier then finding 100 beautiful slovanian women to sign up to get started.

Anyway, if I succeed in my project, I will post how I did it so maybe we can learn something new here.

Well, I'm not really in the dating business myself, (I know it's a good market, but the initial x subscribers is a problem I could not solve) but I think that a site selling a datingscript would be curious enough if your script is really better then many of the other scripts around... Make it freely available (encoded of course with any of the encoding tools) but limited to 50 subscribers... so people can try it out and get frustrated when they start having success... and buy the paid licence... you even can consider disclosing certain features at certain levels...

Hi trozma,

I've just started a site myself. What I'm doing is to make the site 100% free for at least the first year, then charge for premium features at a later date. Of course I've got some advertising on there as well (CPA offers).

The nice thing about a dating site is that because you're collecting valuable information, you can profile your audience and laser target ads. I thought I was unique doing this, but I've just learnt PoF do something similar. Well it obviously works for them and the folk here who make $$$ from PoF CPA offers so I'm on the right track.

Write a component to spot a member uploading a photo of a bald man and obviously you can show them hairloss adverts. I swear facebook knows this trick!

The chicken and egg situation with dating sites is that they're no good with <1000 members. So I'm "buying" women using AdWords. This is a good way to waste your money unless your signup form is slick and your site looks good. I would not have started my site if I didn't have enough cash to get it off the ground.

I don't need to "buy" men because men will flock to any site that offers free dating for men.

When a dating site gets to 1000+ members then its fortunes will change rapidly. Or so I hope!

I'm using article marketing plus the social (facebook, twitter, mailing list) will kick in.

Dating is a good niche but you need a niche and a deep knowledge of that niche. Having started a site all I can say is -

. It's a hell of a step up from cranking out EMD niche sites.

While you can buy any number of rebrandable site scripts, my site is 100% custom built. It took me 2 weeks to get to 1.0 status - that allowed me to test the waters and I'll now go and build something incredible. Keeping scammers off is going to be a bigger effort than I thought.

Dating affiliate schemes are popular - generally the better the site the worse the payout, but the better the site the more likely someone is to subscribe.

This thread is from Feb 2012 and he hasn't logged in since March 2013.

99% chance his site failed to get off the ground. It sucks to spend so long building something and then nothing happens. His mistake in this case was not being a dating site affiliate first and learning promotion through that. If you can find success as an affiliate, then it might be worth moving forward and offering the product or service yourself.

I understand this thread is old, sorry for reviving it, but since I have a personal interest and stake on dating sites I will share my experiences.

as you said, there is a good chance that he failed, I wouldn't say 99%, but is very possible. Or perhaps he is laughing his way to the bank.

I am still trying to get my dating site off the ground. I spent more than I care to spend, but I still think I have a shot to make it. I was tired of building countless EMD(exact domains) and MFA(made for adsense) mini-sites and making $50 dollars a month.

But I have to agree and disagree with you, it was probably a mistake not doing more research on his niche, or even getting a bit more deeper on the dating niche (which is very broad), but if you want to do something that will stick it takes time. You might not see any success in the first year or eve the first couple of years.

For me, the quick money scheme of the web is over. You need to build long lasting web properties to really see real money, the kind of money that you will be able to stop working and make a career out of it.

As others said wisely, the really sticking point on dating sites is to get the "ladies" interested in your site... men will come dime a dozen... and that is the real problem that I am facing right now. for every 30 or so men signing up I have 1 or 2 ladies signing up. Another thing is to get the ladies uploading their picture .... as of now I have no problems with men signing up.

I have done some facebook ads with some degree of success. as of now the site is free, and to access premium content they must pay (men), of course ladies are free ..., I have yet to get a penny from my site, but I think my biggest issue is to drive the interests of women. Once they are signing up with at least the 3 for every 7 men ratio, I think I will start making money.

Hi,
I just wrote a post on how to create Facebook ads. With Facebook you can get really targeted traffic. If you want to make sales, you need targeted traffic. Also, go to plenty of fish and talk about your site.

Here is the deal. Dating websites are a 1/10th of a dime a dozen. Unless you have something that sets your site apart from the rest then you are going to fail. So that leads me to my question:

Does your dating website have something in it that would draw a user to you VS all the other websites around?

Yes of course.

I begun my dating site with a clear very laser specific niche. I think the part where I went wrong was when I tried to get things done on the cheap. I bought a dating script (which was okay) but very soon I realized I needed to get my site visually compelling, so off I went to hire an web designer and then a programmer.

Looking back, I would have done things a bit different.

1st - I would not have purchased an script, and would have done the site from the ground up (as a contractor told me to no avail).

2nd - I would first draw a very good mock up of what I wanted in the site and get a quote from contractors (never go with the cheapest. try to stay on the middle of the price spectrum), contractors from Eastern Europe are very knowledgeable and affordable.

3rd - don't be cheap. a good quality dating site will set you off a good 3K to 5K. Depending on how much you are willing to spend. Of course before you spend that much, make sure to take the time to research your niche and make sure its viable. You can always get a site done for under 1K, but you get what you pay for. You have to remember that dating site will allow you to do a number of different things, and these things will take your contract a while to build. the other option is to learn to program yourself, if money is really a big issue.

4th - Always think mobile first - this is where the growth is. this is where people will be accessing your site - you need to have a good responsive design site.

and 5th - keep in mind that no matter what you do, you might fail. Be mentally prepare to fail. Don't go into a venture thinking that you will fail, but remember failing is a possibility. In my mind internet marketing is my passion, if this venture fail, I already have a 2nd venture planned and researched.

I'm asking because I've started and sold off a wide variety of websites in the dating market, but one thing I stayed away from was online dating member websites like Match.com.

As far as bumping old threads, that's usually frowned upon and it would have been better to have started your own thread, but I like in this specific case it will be okay.

Yes, Ladies are free, Fellas can do some free stuff like browsing, but will have to pay to communicate with other members (there is always the cheapos who log in as ladies to communicate.)

I have my own methods and they served me somewhat well I suppose.

Yes, I did some extensive researching of my competition. things like how many members are online at a certain time of the day, I would open a login as lady and a login as a man. I would pay the premium membership and see how that works. I would also email a number of users and see the amount of answers I would get.

Now things like monetization and market reach is pretty much, trial and error. I work my prices off the competition, and I entered some markets thinking that it would be a nice market, just to find out that it was a dud.

I think after the growing pains the site can go from $0 to $50K a month pretty fast. Maybe that is wishful thinking, but I think is very possible.

I think that most people starting on the dating niche, or any niche for that matter, just don't take the time to do it right.

Creating a dating site and getting it off the ground is not easy. Luckily for me I have the programming background that allowed me to create my own site. I have taken me 5 years to reach where I am. Unfortunately, I was not lucky enough to have the media broadcast my site to the masses like what they did for POF or OKCupid. That is how they became so popular. Nevertheless, my site is now making strides. Good luck with your endeavors. Thanks.
