Marketing a full length, non-fiction original work on Kindle

Hey all. My wife has spent the last few years building a successful career in a niche market on her own terms, and now she's written a book about how she did it. It's around 150 pages, and is a sort of guide for others looking to do what she's done.

We have a list of about 1000 people in this niche, and launched via a blast to them + Facebook fans, have received about 50 sales in a couple weeks. Reviews are great - 4 so far, all 5 stars.

My question is, where do we go from here? My wife is working to get the word out among her network, but that only goes so far. I feel we have a good chance to make some real money here, if we could just figure out how to really market this thing.

Any helpful resources / tips for marketing this type of a work? Most articles I've seen for Kindle marketing are directed towards PLR type stuff.

    Hi Ryan,

You need to increase the size of your list. You want a list ten times that. Also, is Kindle the only place you're selling your product? You could sell this book in a digital format online (PDF/eBook/etc) and make a tonne more sales.

    Hi Ryan,

Your wife could begin posting good, strong comments on blogs and forums related to her topic. Then, after a few weeks, once a bit of a relationship is in place, send review copies of her book (PDFs would be okay) to the blog owners. She can participate on relevant Amazon forums as well.

Guest posting is also good. She could write original articles and offer them to blog owners in her market.

She should probably build a Facebook fan page for the book itself, plus an independent website or blog where fans can go to sign up for additional free information. This will expand her mailing list.

Also, while marketing is important and should not be on-again-off-again, she should also not stop developing more product ideas, both large and small. A growing list of titles, workshops or services will help support her image as an active professional - an expert.

She could contact other people in the market with non-competitive products or services to propose doing JV teleseminars or webinars together. This puts her face in front of more potential customers, and does it very quickly.

Since your wife already has a network in place, it would be appropriate to ask them for referrals. And of course offer them an inducement such as her next book free, or a special teleconference class exclusively for those who send her new signups or new sales. The more outrageous and fun she can make the reward, the better it'll work.

Whatever happens, please do keep us all posted on her progress. We all love success stories.

Cheers from warm and smiling Thailand,
    Charles

Your real problem seems to be marketing.

For starters, send out some free copies to bloggers in the niche and politely tell them you'd appreciate it if they reviewed the book on their blog (just suggest it, don't demand it). This is a great way to get the word out.

While it's certainly understandable (Internet Marketing Warriors), the fixation on online marketing can sometimes be very limiting. This appears to be one of those times.

Put the book on Kindle and a "dead tree" version on CreateSpace. Announce it with a real news release.

Next, get a good list of TV and radio stations, especially 'talk radio' stations. Start contacting the producers or program directors about doing an interview. These stations have untold hours of program time they need to fill so they can hang ads on them.

You want to get the word out, and sometimes the people you want to reach aren't spending their lives online - some of them spend hours a day commuting and listening to the radio.

Like others have said, you need to build your list and the only way to do that quickly without help from other marketers is buying it.

If I were you I would purchase Solo Advertising, start small and go from there... Scale it up!

As stated above, market it the same way you would anything else. Also, consider writing a series of related books (if the niche lends itself to that) and you can market those to your list as well. Better to have people buying 5 books from you than just one

    Seek reviews from popular bloggers.

To sell more books, we need to get more people talking about our books and sharing information about them with their readers.

I have written a book on this subject. If you are interested, look it up.
