SEO and domain name extensions: .com, .org, .info, .net

Hi everyone,

I know there are SEO experts on-board to help clear things up for me.

- Do domain name extensions (org, com, net, info, etc) influence SEO ?
- What about hyphen in domain names eg mybusiness-name.com

    I'm no expert but I think this stuff is not really that important, how you optimize your site and your link building strategy is what I care the most.

    I am an expert with this stuff (from years of testing it, not "theory") and can safely say a domain name extension has very little if any effect with SEO.

    Hypens tend not to either in my experience, however I view them as a negative in terms of people remembering your site.

    Go to www dot mysite hypen for hypen traffic dot com

    It does not roll of the tongue.

    Given a choice I'd opt for a domain with no hypens.

      I used to think anything other than .com will not generally rank well. Thanks for sharing your practical experience

    Yeah we still go with .com as a preference however there is less importance on this now. High quality and relevant content along with quality and relevant backlinks are far more important.

    Its ok to put a hyphen in your keyword rich domain name but don't do it if you don't need to.

    I would also say that .net is more desirable than .info or .biz and of course .org refers to an organisation.

    All the best keyword phrases have been taken long before. And that's why I think Google doesn't care much if you have a domain name totally not "exact match".

    For example, you're in the weight loss niche and have a fatjoe.com domain name.

    Where it matters though is when you try to get a 3-5 word keyword in Google in a few weeks. Then a domain name like "tv stands for flat screens" is a good one.

    When I build my niche sites and want faster rankings, I buy the exact match domain names (.cc, .co, .us, etc.), but if it's gonna be an authority, long term site, then I go for a remember-able, short name (<15 characters).

    Domain extensions have only got importance when you are on selling or buying.... TLD (top Level Domains) include .com, .net and .org

    On SEO there is no effect I have seen yet.... Many big sites run on .net extension despite of having .com, .org....

    Some run on .info and so on........

    So nothing t worry about this......
