How to make money with a url directory?

I bought a website off flippa back in December. It is a URL directory and it is getting about 4000 hits a month with about 1200 being unique and about 15 new websites added each day. It gets about 10,000 page views a month and it has been growing since I bought it. Problem is, I haven't made a dime with it. No one pays for the listings, they all take the free route. No one clicks on the adsense or the amazon ads either. So, I am asking for suggestions on how to make some money with this site. Any suggestions? I thought about requiring the webmaster (or site owner) to sign up to my email list as a requirement for a FREE listing but 1) I don't know if that would make me any money even if they did sign up and 2) I don't have the technical knowledge to implement such a strategy. Any thoughts on that strategy?Anyway, I invite your thoughts and suggestions. The site is "greatest url list DOT info" if you care to look or if you want to submit a site.

I can think of 2 options. These are web owners. They're targeted. Start building a list and offer products to them on a semi-weekly basis - stuff they'd want - SEO-related, etc... stuff that would benefit their website. Or, another option: create a reason for them to pay. Right now, the backlink probably wouldn't be too helpful or whatever you're offering them. Would YOU pay for it? People won't be paying for something that doesn't have value; offer value, and they'll pay.

Take a look at the logs and see how long it takes the average user to fill out the add url form. A real user would spend at least a minute filling out the form. If it's much less than that, say 1-10 seconds, you're just another link directory in someone's list.

It wouldn't surprise me to find you're getting 99% automated directory submissions.

I don't have one and I don't know how to add one. I suppose it was a stupid purchase but I was just trying to kick start my online career. It came with an email list and I thought I could make use of it. I didn't realize that no one had actually opted in to a list.

What type of directory is it? Maybe you can offer information related to the reason people are showing up in the first place. As for getting subscribers to sign up to a list, that's not hard. You've got something they want so make them sign up to get it. From there offer good content related to what your directory is about.

Sign up for an autoresponder service. Aweber and GetResponse are both good. There are many others. And if you aren't hip as to how to operate one, all the major services have tutorials available. And if their tutorials suck go to Youtube to figure it out.

Lots of article directories require that you subscribe to their lists. If you opt out of their mailings they delete your account. I'm not saying you should do that but there is a way to monetize your operation, though it's hard to brainstorm without knowing what it is.

Suggestions based on having built 2 PR1 general link directories in the past 2 months.
1 offer only reciprocal links free, others paid
2 if site has PR above 0, price the link per month and with some discount per annum (don't bother if you get only a few paid listings)
3 check if your site already submitted to all major directory lists
4 if site has PR above 0, sell links on Fiverr, Backlinks.com, LinkAdage.com and all the remaining link selling sites
5 offer few featured links or one of those MRR products at random to all members who optin (offer optin incentive that you can afford to give)
6 put deep links to all your other sites and their content and blog posts into this directory; repeat for sites of your friends, etc

If none of this works or you don't find it worth the effort, sell the site back on Flippa. You should be able to recover the cost you paid.

I also bought a general link directory on another forum. My experience is very similar to yours, no clicks on any ads no matter what I try.

I have come to the conclusion that if you take the time to exercise any judgment at all with respect to the submitted links, a general directory isn't going to ever justify the time. I'm thinking about trying some specialty directories on a couple of sites I already own.

Thanks so much for the advice. I am going to deep link all my other sites now. I have the main pages on there but I had never even considered deep linking.
The site is a PR0. Do you have any suggestions on how to raise the page rank?

          Thanks

Sounds like the email list may be the way to go. I have about 12,000 unique email addresses. I just need to be able to figure out how to add aweber to my site. I bought the site and the seller loaded it on my hostgator account and all I really know how to do is approve the sites and change the confirmation emails.I know that some of the submissions are autobots but I think a lot of them are individual site owners. Maybe an IM related email offer would work.

You can buy a domain name and cloak it to an affiliate link

Require users to put a reciprocal link (that will be your money site) on their site before they are allowed to list a url in the directory

In that way you will be building thousands of backlinks to your money site on autopilot.

    ==================

People go to url directories to list their site not look at ads

I just took a look at your site

Definitely make the reciprocal link a requirement and also you're using the wrong link

Like I said above use your money site as a reciprocal link using the correct keyword so that your money site can show up higher in the search engines for your chosen keyword as more and more users link to it on their site

Choose a profitable product or service to promote (this would be an affiliate link)

Buy a cheap domain name, go to for example godaddy .com and forward the domain name with masking

When users want to add a link to your directory simply use your masked domain name (affiliate link) for the exchange links section

You can either add value to it by adding your existing products as a bonus if they list their sites on your directory or vice versa.
