How do you briefly explain internet marketing to someone?

I'm in college and sometimes my friends or my roommates friends come over to my dorm and see me using Market Samurai or working on a campaign or project and they ask what am I doing. I tend to give them a long and confusing explanation about IM and the keyword research. So I'm asking how do I give a short and sweet explanation about internet marketing to someone. Also would you call it a "job"? if not, what would you call it?

First, if you're working for someone else, it's a job; if you're working for yourself, it's a business.

As for a definition, when people ask me (including my wife!), I tell them I'm filling a need for a product or service online by hooking up the consumer with said product or service. Marketing's marketing, whether internet or not.

        Cheers,
        Ray

          Hi there,

          I completely agree with Ray.

What we do as Marketer's is simply fulfill a need or demand by a consumer, or business and help them grow or create their business. Whether you are promoting someone or working for yourself.

That's it in a nutshell, keep it simple!

Well not entirely true Ray... If you're making money on the internet when you're at your computer great... but as soon as you stop doing the work for a day or two and the money stops then you have effectively created a job for yourself.

However, if you have systems in place so that when you walk away for a week and the money continues at the same rate then you have an effective business.

Tell them whatever you want. They're just going to assume it's something to do with porn anyway.

Their immediate reaction would be "Yeah you're spamming people aren't you?"

Why not be honest and say I'm making money on the internet. That's it, short and sweet. What they think from then on is their loss.

If you want a really simple answer, you can say, "I'm helping people." How? "Connecting them to solutions for their problems" go from there.

naa, just make THEM ask the questions, like...

Their question: "How did you get that brand new car?"
    Your answer: "I paid cash"

Their question: "How did you get the money?"
Your answer: "Not by selling drugs"

Their question: "Well, c'mon tell me then, how???"
Your answer: "Panning for gold but with a map telling me how to find the gold"

Their question: "What the HELL are you talking about???????"
Your answer: "Are you REALLY finally willing to let me tell you how to make money on the Internet?"
