$400/Month From One Site. Can That Be Doubled/Tripled?

Hi Warriors,


After the Christmas sales I decided to just focus on one of my sites that I feel has potential to make more money. I would love to start on a new project but I am wondering whether this would be the right thing to do. I understand that I need to stick to one project and make it a success before moving onto something else.


The thing is I feel kind of stuck in a rut and so far my attempts at scaling up have been met with very slow progress.


This particular site is an Amazon review site with over 100 unique posts. The products are fairly evergreen and the average price is around $150. The site is nearly a year old with only a PR1 ranking and makes around $400/month give or take $50.


Over the past few weeks I have been "cleaning up" or updating each post. Trying to add a bit more content, images and trying to make the whole site easier for people to read and navigate etc.


After cleaning up each post I then backlink the page and move onto the next one. Most of my product pages target "buying keywords" or exact match product names. These eventually tend to climb up the rankings but don't really bring in that much more traffic.


The big search numbers are in the generic keywords and in this niche there are a ton of them! If I had even just 5 of these big keywords on page 1 of Google I am sure I could boost my monthly sales. The thing is, these generic keywords are going to be real tough to rank for. That could eat up a lot of my time with no sure way of knowing if they will ever come out on top.


I am worried about having to rely on this one site, (it is my only real moneymaker so far), which is why I keep thinking about starting another niche. I think this site/niche has a lot more to offer if it is scaled up correctly but I am really unsure whether I am going about it in the right way....or even if I should pursue scaling up!


Does anyone have any advice?


I mean, how do you know you have got as much as you can out of a niche?



Should I start trying to target these high comp high search generic keywords and hope that I rank for them someday?


Do I just leave the site, start a new niche and then maybe come back to it in the future?


I just need a little shove in the right direction. If a site is making 400 bucks then maybe it can make more....right?

    If you improve on something, a tactic, a strategy by 1% per day, after 50 days you'll see a 50% improvement Andy.

    After 100 days you'll see a 100% improvement and after 200 days you'll double what you're doing now. Just focus on this 1% improvement to your overall business strategy each and every day.

    Everyone can improve something by a tiny 1% per day. Might not sound much but give it time and you'll streak way ahead of those trying to bite off more they can chew.

    Think of the tortoise and the hare analogy in a race with one another. At the end of the day...

    ...who won?

      Thanks Mark that helps me a lot. I am reading a book called "The Slight Edge" and it is all about adding very manageable daily improvements to things in your business and life. IM very much relates to this because it is kind of a "do now enjoy later" type of business.

      I think my issue is that I cannot seem to find that "tactic or strategy" that I can improve daily by 1%. It's very frustrating because I have been cleaning up this site now for over a month and still don't see much in increased sales. Maybe some extra traffic but nothing substantial.

      Maybe traffic is my issue as some of these products convert quite well with only a minimal amount of clicks.

    Instead of putting all your effort and energy promoting products for 5% commission why don't you try ClickBank products and make 70%?

    Better yet make your own info product and sell and market it yourself and keep 100% of the profit!

    Keep the Amazon site it'll help pay a portion of your gas bill. To make real money I recommend affiliate programs that pay a decent commission.

      I'm sorry guys but that advice is just plain false. Do you know how the Amazon affiliate program works? You get commission on everything that someone buys after they click your affiliate links. Also Amazon has a lot higher conversion rate (I get anywhere from 4%-9%) than clickbank which is typically around 1%.

      I see your point but I can actually get more than 5% commission through Amazon.....I just need a few extra sales to bump the percentage up. The more you sell, the higher the percentage.

      I tried Clickbank and found it hard work to get any sales even though the commission rate is much higher. I think for me it is more of a mental thing. Seeing just a few sales a day is better for my morale than seeing nothing for days and then 1 big sale at the end of the week.

      Im sure with practice I could improve on my Clickbank work but I have chosen Amazon reviews as a model to work with so I had better stick with it until I have become good enough to try something new.

    It's about getting multiple streams of income Andy, if you have one site earning $xxx per month, find out why and how it is earning that amount, then set up another site in a different niche and repeat what you already done. Once you have a successful system, it works for pretty much anything.

      Yes, very true Kevin, and I did just that. I decided to take a bit of time away from my money earning site and work on something new. I tried to do exactlly what I did with the first site. Alas, this new site is just not bringing in enough traffic at all. Its about 4 months old and I made 1 sale but the traffic is like 20 views a day! I did pick a more competitive niche though...lol.

      Multiple streams of income is very important but somehow I don't feel as though I am getting all I can out of the first site. Yes, it averages $400 but I think it can do more! I just don't know where I am going wrong! As I said before, maybe I need more traffic to the site.

      I want to get to a stage where I feel comfortable enough to properly start on another authority site knowing that I have done everything I can with my first site.

    I agree with Kevin repeat what you did in another niche.

    How much do you need the $400 a month? If it's cash you can invest, what I'd do is hire a full time VA for a month to write reviews and articles, spruce up your site and backlink one or two of the harder keywords as well a a few longtails.

    While they are doing this you can concentrate on your 2nd site and hopefully the VA would have added enough value to your site to make it more profitable.

      That is actually a great idea and I have been thinking about investing some of the cash I made at Christmas back into the biz. I have been paying article writers part-time here and there but have never hired anyone full-time for a month.

    Definately invest some more time on it. It is already making money and ANY site has the potential to be improved and to earn more money. It's a case of identifying these areas and cranking things up a notch.

    Once a site converts... or even a page converts.. drive traffic. Backlink.. etc.

    If after a month or so the additional gains aren't as high as you had hoped, then you could decide to move onto another project.

    In fact, it's not always a good idea to work on lots of different projects but working on two shouldn't be a problem. Why not split your time 80% on your existing site and then 20% on a new project. That way it'll give you a head start for when you plough all your time into it.
