Very common indeed! I think we newbies are like baby vampires trying to suck in everything at once. It's so easy to get caught up in a nightly opt-in binge, and before you know it your poor hard drive is flooded with free reports and you're wondering how on earth you got signed up to all these different lists. I'm going through that now...I decided that I need to regroup and take my hands out of all these pots. I only have two of them to work with after all. I'm going to focus on two of my IM efforts right now instead of 10. And I'll put everything else on my To-Do/To-Try list.

I totally agree! If you can't maintain your focus, you'll never make it in IM because there is so much information out there.

There are a million ways to make money online. Choose one and focus on it 100%, and I am sure you'll succeed.

There's only one thing you can do.

For the first few weeks or even months, do NOT resist the temptation to look for the latest and greatest products. There will always be something that catches your interest and promises incredible benefits.

DO NOT RESIST at this stage, as it will only leave you thinking: "What would have been if..." - a terrible feeling.

Once, however, you start realizing that you're not going anywhere and all the distractions have "mislead" you in one way or another, just pck ONE method you'd like to go through with and STICK to it.

This time you'll find it a lot easier to resist the temptation and chase the shiny balls crossing your way, since you'll have lots of experience to tell you: THERE'S NO WAY THIS IS GOING TO WORK!

And you'll just smile at all those people who have yet to learn this simple rule.

I always say to those who wish to learn from me: Understand and taking action is no longer enough. COMMITTING to something is what's going to make or break your success.

      Hope that helps,
      Edward Brian

Ah yes, I know your pain. I've just been blogging about the Choice Overload Problem the other day. A lot of beginners and even advanced marketers fall victim to it. Getting out of it isn't easy when you're not making money yet, because you're trying everything to find something. Still, the trick is to identify one thing you want to do and that commit to stick with just this one thing and not allowing yourself to be distracted. You need to make a conscious decision. No trick will help you to change your behavior other than your choice

Basically it comes back to how you discipline yourself Ryan. How you organize yourself. And your time.

        Look at it this way...

Each time you go off on a tangent thinking, 'wow, this looks interesting, oh my goodness me will you just look at this'? Each time you do this... you're not simplifying your life in the slightest. Same goes for your learning curve. You're simply tying yourself up in knots.

        Question is...

Why self inflict more pain upon yourself than you need to? By jumping around, you're simply causing yourself more information overload. Each new 'thing' you look at diverting your attention away from focusing in like a laser on your business strategy.

        Now the thing is...

Why do this in the first place? Why not instead just do what you need to do with the information you already have to hand? There's no point you see taking this to the extreme where you learn too much too quickly which only results in you becoming completely paralyzed by inaction, unable to determine the most effective direction you should take.

Stop aiming for the big picture, it's not going to happen overnight. Just break it down what you need to do day by day, week by week to get you to your financial goal one small step at a time and ignore everything else.

Big changes come about by taking small steps at the beginning not running and jumping around hither and thither before you've even learned to walk.

        Best,

        Mark Andrews

          Hi Ryan,

I have the same problem before. But if you recognize what your desire and strength, you can succeed. I have write the articles before at my blog bloggingdotcom.com. I found something interesting from my experience in internet marketing. I.D.K.H.T.S syndrome or "I Don't Know How To Start" syndrome.

Many people interesting to involve in internet business and still not success, in different words, they not get any dollars from their website.

Why? Here I story what happen.

          - Have tried many types of internet business or make money online techniques, but no one of the techniques works.

          - Until now still don't have any sales from website or affiliates marketing, while many strategies applied but still doesn't works.

          - Spending money with paid marketing like CPA, Facebook Ads, Banner Ads and many more.

The syndrome is cause by these two factors:-

          1) Lack Of Knowledge - they want to success fast but don't have initiative to learn how to get success in internet marketing. The main reason is want to save money from spending for knowledge. Thinking that they know everything and don't need to buy some knowledge.

          2) Information Overloaded - the fact is opposite from before. It is because reading or get information from many types of make money online either from freebies source or paid product. But in the end you do not know which one to start.

Actually, there are many other factors that can lead to problems, but if it is reviewed again to two main factors above, the Lack of Knowledge and Information Overloaded.

You really do not need to worry, because this is a natural thing that happens, like when I was first involved with affiliates around the end of 2010, are a little blur. More, when I was still new to this internet business.

So what should you do? Here some simple tips :-

          1) Knowing what your most interest in Internet Marketing.

There's many kind of make money online or internet marketing in market. But you can't run all the internet marketing. So, what you should do? Choose only one kind of internet marketing you most passion about it. I'm know affiliate marketing can make money. I'm know E-bay can make money too. But the important things. You must focus in one kind of business

          2) Write your own goal.

This is the basic before you start everything before business. Set your own goal and write it on paper. Use S-M-A-R-T goal in writing. A S.M.A.R.T. goal is defined as one that is specific, measurable, achievable, results-focused, and time bound.

For conclusion, change the mindset of making money. Be simple and systematic. If you start with these two basic things, I very sure you know how to avoid "I Don't Know How To Start" syndrome.

We all have been there. The only way to stop is self discipline. Unsubscribe from others lists and stop going on WF unless you need specific info for your current project.

Sometimes you need to go through this period to understand the value of self discipline.

yes this is quite obvious in IM, as we have lots of methods in generating income but we need to check for a method which takes least amount of time in generating a huge income. Therefore we need to opt for the method in which time taking is less and generating income is more.

One way to help is by unsubscribing from most of the internet marketers
list......Pick one business model (product creation, affiliate marketing, ebay etc)
Then buckle down and get focus.

Also would help if you write down 5 tasks per day down on a black/white
notepad and just focus on those tasks.

i can definitely relate to that, there seems to be so many different ways to make money on-line. I switched from one to the other over a period of a few months and this has not dome me any favour at all.

I think when you first start as an internet marketer is fair to try at least two to three different ways before you settle for one that you really like.

I am now trying to stick to one and see how it goes. However there is still this voice at the back of my mind telling me that there might be a better way out there that i haven't yet figured out. I am trying to ignore it but it is not easy.

If you're jumping from one thing to the next like this, the first question that pops into my head is:

Do you know exactly what you want to do online yet? Based on your initial post in this thread, it sounds like you don't.

If you're struggling to figure out what you want to do online, remember:

Clarity is a HUGE part of IM success.

IM is actually pretty simple: you can sell only one of two things:

      1. Products
      2. Services

      That's it!

And selling products or services online happens in the same basic way for everyone, no matter what they're selling:

      Traffic > Opt-in page > Autoresponder series (or e-zine) > Sales page

That's it! It's just that simple. (We IMers tend to overcomplicate things.)

But no matter what your niche is, or whether you're selling a product or a service, do you know what your business model is?

A business model is the framework or skeleton of your business. Essentially there are three types of online business models:

      1. Membership-based model

A membership-based business model allows you to build a community of people (your members) who are as passionate about your subject as you are. Your membership fees can be monthly or annual, but either way, you're building recurring, passive income.

There are a lot of resources and information out there to help you build a membership-based business if you're interested in doing this.

      2. Product-based model

Selling products allows you to maximize your time and effort by selling items over and over again. This can be hard goods or it can be information products. Information marketing is it's own business model under the product-based model. Information marketing allows you to take your brain to the bank by creating a product ONCE based on what you know and selling it over and over again.

I see someone has already recommended affiliate marketing. You can choose to market either products or services as an affiliate.

      3. Service-based model

Selling services can be great for 1) generating quick cash (as in the case of article writing or video producing) and 2) establishing your expertise and getting testimonials.

However, in the long run, your goal should be to offer services at a PREMIUM. The biggest advantage of IM is LEVERAGE. You're able to leverage your time, money and expertise exponentially online. We all have just 24 hours each day. Time to get ruthless about what you expect for those hours you spend in IM each day. Expect more of yourself and more from your business friends, clients, partners, etc.

What results are you getting for those hours you spend online each day? Ultimately, your services should be at the bottom of your funnel and cost the most since they involve your time and personal attention. (We all have a limited amount of time each day.)

The fun (and confusion) comes in with all of the endless mix-and-match possibilities of the above models. If you're just starting or still struggling to make money, keep it simple:

      Pick just ONE!

      1. Pick ONE niche. (Something you're interested in and know something about.)

      2. Pick ONE target market for your product or service. (Who will buy what you're offering? The more specific you are, the more you narrow it down, the more successful you'll be.)

      3. Pick ONE business model.

Now that you're clear about what business you're in, FOCUS! (And stop buying any info not related to your niche and target market, period!)

      F -- Follow
      O -- One
      C -- Course
      U -- Until
      S -- Successful

And remember: build a list, Build a List, BUILD A LIST!

In IM, it's easy to put the cart before the horse. Take a deep breath, step back and consider what type of business you're REALLY want. Don't worry about getting traffic or buying that expensive traffic product until you know 1) what your business model is, 2) what niche you're in and 3) WHO your target market is!

Successful business people will tell you that MARKETING is more than half the effort that's needed for success anyway. So pick a niche, target market and business model. Then spend most of your time and effort marketing it.

If you DON'T have a solid plan or system, THAT'S when it's hard. A good system will shave YEARS (and save you big $$$) off of your learning curve

That's why I recommend investing in at least one good, comprehensive IM course (or mentor who will give you such a system) instead of jumping from one $37 e-book to the next. A lot of people here complain about not being able to make any money. But neither are they willing to invest in their business. (Buying a random bunch of $37 e-books doesn't count.)

The best thing I ever did was invest in a comprehensive IM course aimed at REAL business owners, not just other IM wannabes. Yes it was $1500. (Now it's only $997. :p) But it was truly some of the best A-Z IM info I ever bought. Everything else I've learned (from the $37 e-books) since has simply been plugged into this system.

Get a solid plan or system and then work the plan!

      Hope this helps!

        Michelle
        Great advice Michelle, thanks!

It's tempting to keep changing your plan when there's so much information out there that you know might work for your business. But I suggest you stick to one plan, at least for a few months, set up analytics and look at your results. Look at what aspect of your business plan that needs improvement and change that. Stick with it for a few months to test. That's the nature of our business. You have to constantly improve to survive. But you also have to be patient and see your business plan through to check if it works. If you keep changing your business plan, you'll never know what would really work, and like you said, you'll end out burned out and exhausted.

Once you business plan figured out, I recommend that you outsource so you'll have more time to think about your business plan and improve on it.

Don't worry we've all been there at some point or another. A good thing to do would be to unsubscribe form some of the lists you are on to minimize distractions.

Another thing I have found helpful is to read up on some time management techniques. Pick one method and use proper time management to organise yourself and you will be amazed at what you can get done.

An example would be to set yourself daily tasks then work in one hour blocks where you have no distractions and you only work on one thing for an hour solid. This has helped me tremendously.

I recommend getting a reputable mentor who will keep you accountable and focused. It might seem like a lot of money but think about how much you have spent/ are spending on stuff you ultimately don't use and you'll probably be surprised.

I was exactly like you and have only started to see success and money coming in since getting a mentor.

Do your homework first though, check the warrior forum for information about any potential mentor and see if there is anything about them you need to be concerned about.

    Good luck!

I don't know why we all have to go through this. It's like IM growing pains or something.

Several months ago I decided to pick a business plan I liked and decided to abandon all the others. I unsubscribed to all the lists I was on that didn't support that plan. I'm committed to doing this plan for a year (longer but right now I'm planning a year out). Everything I do revolves around this plan.

When I stumble on something that isn't on this business plan I have a file on my computer I put the "bright shiny object" that I can come back to later if/when this business plan is successful and I'm ready to start something new.

    Hope that helps!

Focus is so important in internet marketing.
I find that by writing myself a todo list every day with just a few items on it helps me to stay focussed on what I need to do.
I limit myself to 4 or 5 things only and narrow it down to those.
Also try not to get distracted by checking email constantly or surfing net or social networks.

I must admit I'm guilty of it as well. I agree that most of the solution is your own discipline but having said that, even if you do choose just the one business model and you invest a lot of time on it, it may end up being time wasted.

Say for instance, you go down the road of building adsense niche sites and as such you spend a considerable amount of time (and money), only to find that the sites flop.

What then? Amazon Kindle, Ebay or whatever. You choose one and lo and behold your second business model also dips despite the sales pitch of "this can't fail" and "take a look at my Clickbank earnings" hype.

Then all of a sudden you receive an email (or read a WSO) that offers "the best Adsense Niche Websites Course Ever" type of product. You start to think, "hang on, I've already got a load of Adsense sites. Maybe this is the missing link" So, you're back into Adsense sites, but hang on, your second work-in-progress model (say it's Amazon Kindle) has an absolutely huge array of products, tips available in the WSO section. And they are all so reasonably priced. And apparently, none of them can fail!! Where's the harm at that price!!

So, before you know it you are in that seemingly never ending whirlpool of great offers, can't fail, 30-day money back guarantees etc etc.

All of the advice above of only moving onto a new project or business model only when your first model is working well is so right. But aren't the sales pages brilliant at times. "You really need to act now otherwise next time you call back the price will have gone up".

Maybe you need to substitute the urgent call for action in the sales pitch with your own call to action. Maybe you should tell yourself (and me tell myself):

"You really need to act as soon as you have finished your current project, not now. So what if the price does go up, there will be someone else with a similar, if not better offer, soon enough in the future".

      Best of luck.

      Regards

      Frank

This thread has been very helpful! I have also gone through this - wasted much time and money! My goal this year has been to concentrate on two words: Focus and Finish. I've just finished my first marketable product and I will be launching it soon. I've decided to focus on one main revenue stream (product creation & marketing) instead of attempting to do a million things at once.

The only other thing I've done is sell unused domain names on Flippa that I bought during a compulsive domain buying streak when I thought I'd set up a bunch of Adsense sites. I've actually made a little money on these, but not much since these were just domain names with no content.

I set up gmail folders & filters for the IMer's whose lists I still want to receive. The emails go straight into the folders so I can read them later instead of getting side-tracked every time I get a new email.

    Best of luck to you!

Hey Ryan, having a plan and following through on it can be very hard at times but it's important to stay focused if you are to achieve your goals.

Try writing out all your goals/ambitions and work backwards from them. Ask yourself what do you have to do in order to achieve them and write down each mini-step until you reach where you are now....

Then organize all these little steps and prioritize them....what is very important that needs to be done now? whats less important that could be done a little later?

If you feel confident enough you should outsource some of the more mundane tasks and free up your valuable time to work on the essential ones. Very important to seek outside expertise if your not able to do something....For example - I'm useless at developing product images so I just outsource them to a professional graphics designer. Of course I have to pay them but think of all the work I can get done when I free up all this time?

It can be very overwhelming (believe me I know) but keep the chin up and I'm sure you'll be fine. Tim Ferriss's 4 Hour Work Week is well worth a look, might give you some inspiration to drive forward.

    Good luck with it

I haven't read the other responses but here is my personal advice.
I don't think there are many people out there that stick to one single plan in the beginning as it is money we are after...after a short period of trying one method, it's only natural to move onto another.
What I personally recommend is that you find something that brings in a small amount of money while you work on another side project (preferably something bigger)
If you work on nothing but big things in the beginning (which take time), you will only be going to the next big thing if you don't succeed within a week or so.
If you can write, try offering some services here on WF, if not, learn to build links and offer SEO services here to fund you while you work on your masterplan...
    Hope this helps
    Best regards

I did lots of things in the beginning of my IM career that I am

Nightengale got it spot on.. it's all about building a list. Forget about everything else, unsubscribe from all those emails and concentrate on building a list.
    >Pick a niche that you have some interest in
    >Get a blog up and running re that niche
    >Put up great content regularly
    >Create a free report and offer to your readers in exchange for their emails
    >Follow up with auto-responder (email marketing)
    >Send valuable content to them via email (or just let them know you've put a new post up on your blog) and establish a good relationship with them
    >Send them emails with links to your products for sale or affiliate products

    Simplez.
This takes time and effort at the beginning when you are marketing your blog and getting traffic to your site but after you have a list of subscribers... BOOM!

Plus time management and planning. Some Warriors have mentioned planning etc above and they have offered some really good advice so take that on board as well.

Don't worry, it happens to everyone. You just have to decide to have enough of it and focus on one thing.

The visualization exercises explained by Larkrise are awesome. What if you carry on with the current plan for 6 months? How long before bankruptcy makes that plan fail?

      My take:

As Larkrise says, pick one. Now that's the hard part, I think.

      frankp57 illustrates that wonderfully!

But I think Jas Kaur has explained the solution. At least, it's the ONE plan I am latching onto. With some perseverance and even a touch of positive results, I'll be continuing that path for years. It will be the BASE of a real business here.

Start up a blog at YourName.com, put out some value and be a good member of the community - for whatever market you choose. Build up some posts, and have something valuable for people to visit. Then as you go visit other blogs and the forums and such, linking back, be truly helpful. That will make people wonder who you are, and get some clicks. The truly valuable stuff already on your blog will move them one step closer to actually respecting you - and your squeeze should collect a name and email.

Now, some of the 1500 marketing plans, resale rights packages and such already on your hard disk can come into play. You need a powerful squeeze and offer. And for most of us that don't have an existing history of successes, grabbing a PLR package is going to be a good way to have a powerful offer.

Between the blog with your ideas on it, and valuable content available for the cost of an email address, a list starts to develop.

And you post and post and post, adding more value.

Maybe head back here and thank LarkRise and Jas Kaur and others for their helpful assistance getting you off the Merry-Go-Round and onto a business-creating success path. Find blogs where there are people, comment intelligently and provide some assistance, always with your link back to your blog. Some of those real people may be inspired to visit your blog, and this is one of the keys. Targeted people taking action to look at YOU.

And then your emails can link to offers you do have ready. Slow and steady, with progress that will likely feel painful at first - but go back to the success visualizations LarkRise illustrated. Keep on target, keep putting energy into your system. Keep looking for people with problems you can help, and keep looking to strike up conversations and partnerships with others in your market.

And way back when you started writing your first blog posts - follow all the good advice here to start ignoring email. Filter it with gmail filter rules, unsubscribe. Whatever it takes. Your blog and building value on your blog is important. Everything else is poison in the well. Once you blog has some valuable stuff, SHARING your blog with others is the plan of action - all else is still poison in the well.

I am finally ready to implement one simple idea: Just In Time... (learning, purchases, etc.).

Do you get on lists, purchase packages and learn about the hottest new trends "in case" it would be helpful now or "soon"?

      Stop that.

What do you need today? (I need to actually configure my blog, add in my shiny new Optimize Press theme, and put up my first content posts!)

So do that. What do I need to accomplish that? Nothing I don't already have. No WSOs, no purchases, no opting into new lists. I already have what I need and require.

What's your ToDo list for today (pick any "today" when it arrives)? What is MISSING and REQUIRED to complete the items on that list? Nothing? Cool. No expense, no distractions. Just get your list done. Have a wonderfully successful day.

New day? What's the ToDo list for today? Oh - you DO need a new theme? Get that done - search the advice, sort it and filter it and make a decision. Get the theme you decide on, get it installed. It's needed NOW. The time is right. No need to hem and haw. If needed, look up someone to help with the messiness of installing a theme and all the stuff that can entail.

But the key is - do this when it's needed. Yeah, maybe a new theme should have 10 days' lead time, so that is the "just in time" timing for the new theme. 10 days before you'll want to again push a pile of people over to view it you put on the new theme, and have time to recover from unexpected things. No need to even worry about it 30 days beforehand - because it only needs 10 days. So don't clutter your earlier days. Take care of this task "just in time", and that's a 10-day timeframe.

In fact, learning all this "just in case" stuff sucks up a lot of time. Causes more emails to hit your inbox. Costs you money.

And the hard part is...actually PICKING one thing to do that is GOOD ENOUGH to follow through on for 3 months or a year. Pick something good enough to still be THE thing in 6 months, and ignoring "just in case (this fails)" stuff gets much easier.

You can spend your time in, "What do I do TODAY to make SURE this plan works?" and ignore the "What if it doesn't work?" stuff.

Getting your own blog going, and building a community with it. That's a good plan, and it will still be a good plan in 6 months and 3 years.

I hope you'll come visit MY BLOG. Truly - I've decided to put it up and use it as MY PLAN. Today or tomorrow I'm acting on that decision. And I have started to ignore things that get in the way of that plan. (But you can see - I did still do a couple searches in the Warrior Forum today...

All the best, Ryan! Hope you'll have a blog as a primary focus that I can comment on soon. If not, would love to hear what you see as the CENTER of your business - that which lets you ignore everything and everyone else and just WORK building your core.

Then a lot of the other advice in this thread will work. Focus. Unsubscribe. Because at that point you HAVE your one thing, and it is enough. And you simply work on that one thing. And it grows and grows and grows.

      Cheers,
      Tim

    Focus. Focus. Focus.

You can make a ton of money with just one or two models. Just choose one and stick to it.

You can't be a top golfer, tennis, football player at the same time. I doubt if you can be a Facebook , LinkedIn, Twitter, SEO, and Google adwords guru all at once. There isn't enough time to master everthing.

oh ello - this is about me!

Or at least how I used to be

Indeed you will make no money, zero, nada, neit if you keep buying stuff and jumping about

Jan Roos talks about how he did that for over 2 years before finally settling on one model - in his case Amazon and he is reported to earn $40k a month (although I've heard less but hey $10k not bad and if you havent made any money yet - your first $100 feels like gold!

As a professional coach I'd say you need to alarm the part of you that keeps going off on a tangent and focus the part of your mind that can do this and do it well.

So my advice is based on the olympians who are all pretty successful in what they do - arent they?

Visualize yourself continuing to do what you've been doing for a few more weeks, imagine the outcome (no money, more spending, more frustrated)

Then imagine yourself continuing to do what you've been doing for a few more months, yep, its summer and you're still....

Then imagine being forced to leave IM altogether cos you've spent all your money and upset all your friends being unsociable and talking about the 'yeah but... other marketers are getting this/that or doing ...'

Okay - enough alarm for you?

Now visualize you've chosen one business model. Just one. And you either have all the tools you need to make that one work or you get the additional tools and start work. Write down what you will be doing this week, next week and so on. Give yourself a target for completing the elements of this business model and a target for seeing profits.

Now imagine you've been doing that and following your own blueprint and doing really well for a month. How does that look/feel?

Then off you go mr, you will do it.

Your unconscious follows your every command and thus far you haven't given it one other than, I think I might need this bit of advice or I may need that plugin or maybe I'll do better with ....

So change the record and upload a new track - make it look, sound and feel like the most appealing movie of all time and run that movie through your mind daily

All the best to you - you can be cured of procrastination!

    Ryan,

All our fellow Warriors have given such great advice. I love reading all the tips and techniques to use to stay focused and on-track!

In addition to having a plan, staying focused, not buying more than you need to accomplish your goal (no SOS - "shiny object syndrome"), eliminating all outside distractions, etc. ... I would suggest that you consider getting a coach or a mentor.

Having a coach or mentor who are already successful and making good money in IM will definitely decrease your learning curve, save you money in the long-run and eliminate a lot of stress and worry from your life. You will also achieve your goals a lot faster if you apply yourself and work your plan.

    Good luck, my friend!

    Dear Ryan,

I can understand your problem bro! I was this same, just like you. Buying and trying everything and know what happened? I lost a lot off of my bank account instead of making money from IM.

Remember, "get rich fat" does not happen in any business. Internet Marketing is a professional industry, where big names like Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, etc. have invested trillions of hard-earned dollars. And they did not invest into it to make "quick bucks".

Forget everything about get rich tonight, push button profits etc. The only thing which worked for me within months and can probably work for anyone is selling services or products through 3rd party websites. For example; eBay, Fiverr, oDesk, eLance, etc. These big websites spend a lot of money each month to channel the traffic.

    • Creating a money making product is very easy, a little research and re-writing is all it takes.
    • Creating a money making website is easier too, opensource CMS like wordpress, joomla, drupal, etc and topic relevant website theme/skin is all it takes.
    • In simple words spending money is much easier than earning. Buying, if funds provided, is very easy while "Selling" is very difficult.

So when it comes to selling you will fall for the traffic. How to pull in traffic to your website where you are selling a "shiny" product?

Bro, you really have to listen to me, trust me. I have been there, done that and got fed up. Free traffic is useless, does not convert no matter how clever your salespitch is.

In short, stop wasting time and money on product and website creation. You can outsource this happily and your employee will do much better job than you do.

Internet marketing is just about real life marketing, nothing more nothing less.

The "more people know about product you are selling" is what makes you money not a website with shiny product and salespitch but either no traffic "dead zone" or "not interested" traffic.

Spend some time on numbers before you even start your niche research. Your capital investment should have 60% room for "marketing" and your cost of fixed asset "website including products to sell" should not be more than 40%.

Average operating expense per site should have a constant account for "SEO / PPC" but not more than 50% of your budget.

I hope this help you to understand this business

    To your success!

coolidge effect, usually when you promote and promote but nothing happens you
    1. don't use the right tools / or mixture of tools for your business for the marketing
    2. stick to things that don't work with the hope that they will (like liking other people's comments in hope they check out your FB profile and like your business ..)
    3. don't stick enough with things that do work but over time (like SEO and building organic traffic)
    4. you promote to the wrong people or on the wrong place (you can get traffic from everywhere but - you can get LOTS of traffic that is qualified usually from only a few places so - when it comes to money - makes much more sense to spend your time where traffic is cheap or in droves)
    5. you want your traffic to be free - there ain't free traffic; even if you do social media all by yourself you still SPEND time that you would have otherwise traded for money somewhere else.

Focus on sticking and learning one of these skills as they will set you up with a good foundation ...With regards to any business or IM there will be 3 - 7 skills ...

In IM my pick would be
    1) List Building
    2) Web site creation / Word press
    3) Product creation
    4) Affiliate Marketing
    5) Membership sites
    6) Traffic
    7) Sales funnels / upsells etc

not in that particlular order of importnace as these are the foundational pillars ..

People look to make $$ before setting their foundations rights and hence there is a Lack Of Patience to see results in one method and jump to the next before really mastering the key skills..

If you pick start mastering tese skills then you know how to make the best of these as i was in the same boat and working on these skills has slowly made me more focused and getting a meaning ful biz going.

hi Ryan the easiest way to solve this issue i find is to STOP, walk away from your computer, get out the house armed only with a pen and paper. Go to a quiet spot and just think and write. The simplest solutions are often overlooked these days because we are in such a complexed world. Just scribble away and then make lots of priority lists. After a few hours you will have a plan. Organise the plan into a list with the largets most difficult boring first. Break the back of it by doing this task then continue down the list.

We all like doing the fun jobs, but it's the boring hard ones that get us like you are at the moment. Remember the Crawl, walk, Run analgy. As newbies we are and will be crawling around for a while. Good Luck.

Like others have mentioned a plan is key. But how do you get from losing your mind over to an organized plan. The first step is performing an honest audit of your skills as well what is making you money.

Everything you do can be tracked to profit or cost. Start looking at what's making and costing you money. Once you know that put all the winners in your plan and dump everything else.

Thanks guys for the priceless info here (waaaw)

Everyone is facing this problem at the beginning including myself of course. You start to jump from implementing that method to another one because you expect huge results in a short time. And after doing that many time you get pressure after pressure and you get frustrated as a result.

I want to add this; you need to take one method you want to implement it and making the steps until you end them and give them the time.

Take a pen and write the steps in your notebook, that you gonna do and just focus on them.

    Good Luck

You are experiencing the famous "INFORMATION OVERLOAD" problem.
The best you can do is just focus on one thing, ONLY ONE, and work hard on it, let the others rest for a bit and take all the time you have to work only on one thing.

Focus your efforts doing researchs on one money making method, and you will become a specialist in that area. Once you learn enough, implement what you learned, and start making some real money consistently, only then if you are still interested resume one of your other projects.

It might sound a bit like a "slap in the face" hahaha but it's not the intention at all. I am telling this to you because this Information Overload problem is the cause of A LOT OF PEOPLE that decide to quit the business. And they do that because they can't find the way out of that problem.

I hope you can overpass this issue, and always have in mind that you are not alone. We here at the community can help you to cool down your ideas and start from scratch before you despair.

Thank you to everyone who has added value to this thread.

What I have realised is that one needs to focus on one thing until you have made headway in that venture. You also need to exhaust every avenue within that course until there is nothing more to try.

Also, what i do know is that building a list is probably the most CRITICAL, if not the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT in element in Internet Marketing.

Most of IM involves driving traffic to an offer, squeeze page, blog, website etc and this can be done effectively with the use of an existing list.

For newbies like myself, i am glad that i was able to realise the importance of list -building early on.

I've been in exactly the same place with having too many things going without a really clear direction. The first step I took in fixing the situation was to drop one of my websites. It was a new one, but it still hurt. Nevertheless, I'm glad I did it. Sometimes, you have to lighten your load so you can keep moving toward your goal.

I put on mental blinders so I don't get distracted with a new idea or anything that doesn't fit into improving what I'm already working on.

        Consolidation is what industry does.

Find ways to put everything in its place - not separate tasks. Similar and related tasks should be placed together in doable packages. Then outsource or automate. Look for plugins, softwares and services that take care of a bunch of tasks for you in one shot.

At all times, remember, control is key (control even your links - redirect!!!). Never have your control spread out and never leave any part of your marketing up to the whim of any entity, business, etc. You need to centralize control of all your marketing even though you outsource the tasks or use other people's products.

You need to delegate tasks to others, software, etc.

I know what you mean about too much information...One thing I did that helped was to just save an email from each "guru" type of person I liked, then unsubscribing from all but a couple who have proven to give me stuff that works in my business. Doing this made all the difference.

Simple...(I think you're suffering from "analysis paralysis")

Step 1: Get a piece of paper and list your goals (in order of importance)
Step 2: Write out what you have to do to achieve these goals (again, in order of importance)
Step 3: Complete one goal (or be close to completing it) before going on to the next one.

    This should work.

Hey Ryan, I've been there and know exactly how you feel.

I finally followed the advice of a friend of mine and hung a chalkboard in my office. On this chalkboard I write down all of my current projects/projects I want to tackle.

The visualization of having everything there to actually look at (versus trying to keep it sorted in your brain) has the effect of separating each project entirely from each other.

Somehow this obvious separation of "things to do" really as helped prevent me from doing too many things at once. I'm much more motivated to tackle one project at a time, so that I can erase it from my chalkboard, and move on to the next project.

It may be worth a shot.

One thing I learned that has had the biggest impact on my finally achieving something online versus just being busy (way too busy with no results) was this: Spend the time you have dedicated to working on your business doing ONLY the Productive things that will lead you to directly making money in your business.

Productive time is for producing only; not for reading emails or new product offers, or even filing papers - Use your best energy for the productive time and do the rest later or maybe not at all! If you stay focused like this results will come...and much easier too.

Just remember, it is not written anywhere that you have an obligation to read every email you get! Try making an email folder called Email Black Hole and put them in there unopened, or maybe just unsubscribe, or you could even change the address to another account that you could check once every week or so - if you wanted to.

I've been there also stuck in the cycle of not making money jumping from one thing to the next!

What I did is removed myself off all mailing lists! I must of been on about 30 with all the wso I had bought so I was getting bombarded daily with new offers!

As a recent subscriber to the warrior forum I thought I'd add my input - which comes from a new angle to the other worthwhile posts on this thread. As some of us are still in the "conscious incompetence" phase of IM and need to consume more than we produce at the moment it's worth understanding how to organise this.

Of course, I have shiny new object syndrome. There are some great ideas, products and sales pages on this site and it's hard not to get drawn in to them and I'm sure that some have their value within the niche you would be interested in conquering first. So, how do you manage them? How do you prevent going broke?

Here's what I do. For the purposes of this I use Gmail and Open Office. Any other email client or spreadsheet package would work great.

First I have set up a filter in Gmail. It pulls every email with the subject matter "Receipt for Your Payment" . Also add a filter for "Refund from".

Next set up a spreadsheet. Columns I use are
Date, Guarantee Days, Title of WSO Bought, Price, Read?, Benefit?, Keep?, Refund?, Notes.

I also total the cost column ( in time I will add a total by month ).

Every time I buy a WSO I enter the details into this spreadsheet. I can cross check with the Gmail filters if I get behind.

    What does this do?

It helps me focus on what I have looked at, what I haven't looked at, what was of benefit and what wasn't but most importantly it allows me to see the money I have spent so far - you need to setup some formulas to discount refunded WSO's.

You could of course get even more clever than this and set up an entire project cost spreadsheet with a budget and attach some goals and then track your costs against this.

    e.g. "I will learn copywriting" - Budget $200 - Revenue $1000 within six months.

Of course from a tax/business point of view you should be doing this anyway and as we all know. If you don't treat it like a business, it won't become a business.

Every day I review the spreadsheet and check what I have not yet reviewed ( it obviously makes sense to review the oldest first ). If I lose interest at any point then I decide it isn't relevant to my niche or that I don't resonate with the creator and I request a refund and remove myself from their email list. It doesn't mean their product is no good, it just means it's no good for me.

Hope this helps someone out there.

    Best

Staying organized is key. Honestly, its not bad to give yourself some discretion to keep looking at new shiny objects...if that's what you enjoy and sometimes that alone can spur additional ideas. However, the key is to do this within an organized fashion. Eg. Monday I'm going to spend 4 hours writing content, 2 hours surfing shiny objects, 3 hours creating backlinks...you get the idea.

How fab Steve. I'm just working on a wso that includes business management basics including a spreadsheet for outgoings and income. Your spreadsheet is designed to help focus the mind aswell as providing a bookkeeping environment.

You mentioned being a newbie and I just thought I'd chuck a comment in about refunds. It is not shouted from the rooftops or anything but anyone who repeatedly purchases and refunds can be banned from buying wso's. At least that's what I've been told.

It is one of the most difficult things to measure when your starting out. If you don't buy the 'shiny object' when you discover it, the price will go up, either in a dimesale or because the product is moved to other pastures. But when your new to either IM or the forum or the niche the product is focused on, how do you know you will need/like/use said product?

I thoroughly recommend finding as much 'free' information as you can. And many (the better ones anyway) marketers will share information/videos with you as part of their general mailing. Those that literally only send emails to promote a product are not that helpful and in a way they are showing that they don't 'care' about their 'list'.

I wonder Steve if you are in NLP (just noticing your comment about conscious incompetence. I think you'll like hearing that you will eventually be working from an unconscious competent position sooner than you may know. But in my opinion we are all newbies in some area of IM no matter how long we've been at it.

      My comments on this thread are;

Read, listen, watch, search and take notes. Dont buy it if you aren't pretty sure it will add value.

I recommend learning first - for free as much as possible, then buy stuff that enhances or progresses your learning. You must first know the answer to the following and be able to understand the terms used. You can build from there.

      1 - learn about keyword/ niche research
2 - learn about affiliate marketing
3 - learn everything you can about seo
4 - learn about the best places to buy your urls
5 - learn about the best hosting packages for your budget/needs
6 - learn how to build a website and what are the essentials to have on your site for
      a) security
      b) speed... then
      c) all the other stuff eg monetization, content

Put into practice what you've learned and start making money. As your income grows, reinvest into the business to build bigger.

7 - focus on your strengths and outsource everything else

      Luck to all in IM

It's always easier said than done, but self-discipline and focus are the two major qualities you really need to hone when you embark on any entrepreneurial venture. IM is particularly hard because of abundance of choices.

But it's a phase everyone goes through- it's part of the learning curve! It will get easier as you learn. But like most people here have advised, choose one niche, identify your target market, set some achievable goals and stick with it. Provided you have done good research and acquired some marketing skills, you will see positive results!
