I've been working away on one of my sites for over 12 months. The site last month made over $3000. Now i'm getting offers from people looking to buy my website.

Would you sell? If so how much would you want?

I would look to see if I thought the kind of money it is making will last, I mean if you expect sales to have peaked then selling might be an idea while you can get a good price.
If not why sell a site that churns out some $

    whats the site?

I got huge offers for one of my sites in the past and I looked at why they wanted it then went out and did it...lol now make more money than before :-)

If your site requires a lot of work to maintain then selling it is an option but if its set and forget whats the point of selling?

99% of my sites are set and forget so i dont flip many of them... no point

I personally would keep hold of it if its bringing in $3000 unless you need the money for something or want to invest in something bigger.
Also look at how much work you are putting into your site over a monthly basis. If it is too time consuming then consider selling it. If the profits are coming in on autopilot I would hang on to it.

If you don't really need the money....No.

Keep it for now. Re-visit the site from a new perspective and re-think new ways to monetize that traffic and ramp the $3k up.

Then make the decision again in 6 months time

Only if you don't think it has a big future.

Sell sites you don't like. Keep the sites you do.

    Danny makes some good points.

Other things to keep in mind is whether you have built a list of subscribers with your site. That is a good way of bumping up the price.

If you site is over a year old and you are trying to sell it on somewhere like flippa then what you can probably expect as a return is the average of your monthly income over that year to be taking into account and then you will probably be able to sell it for between 8-13 times that monthly income.

There are to many unknown variables for me to give you a specific answer because just because your site made $3,,000 last month doesn't mean anything in and of itself.

Maybe you did a huge PPC campaign that actually made you a loss financially just so that you could so incomings of $3,000 or maybe there was some other variable. Perhaps all the other months of the year it only made between £200 and $1,000.

Also, obviously at the beginning it proably hardly made anything, but for the last few months maybe it has been making around the $3,000 mark so you can sell it with that in mind and aim for people to just take into account the last say 6 months revenue instead of the last 12.

As I said, there are to many potential variables to give you a strong answer, but typically, if there is not a list to sell as well, I would look for getting about 11 -12 times my average monthly revenue. Some people are able to sell for more, most seem to sell for less.

But it does depend on the site, the niche, and a lot of other variables.

I think the site has got a future, and it makes the money pretty much on auto pilot.

I do currently have a slight problem with a trademark issue but I think I can deal with it.

The site is in my sig if you want to take a look.

Thanks for the comments. My gut was saying keep, but then I thought what would I do with an offer of say $30k?

IN that case keep it unless they offer you £90K :-)

I hung on to mine and hopefully it will be worth £500K in a few years :-)

Or it could go to sh1t and we lose everything but hey thats business :-)

That is not a slight problem with trademark. That is a HUGE problem with trademark.

Having Wordpress in your domain is just asking for trouble.

Why do you think most Wordpress domains shorten wordpress to WP?

      Like WProbot, WPsubscribers, etc.

Sell it. Now. Before the government takes it away from you.

I'm in the process of setting up a new site on a new domain! I'm a little concerned I might drop some rank, however I should be fine with 301s right?

So you would knowingly sell something that you knew was going to get taken away from you? Remind me never to do business with someone like you!

On topic, why would the Government take it away from you? Do you even know what you are talking about? I'd be very surprised if Wordpress would bother pursuing sites selling themes and even then it has nothing to do with the Government.

@OP - I think you made a good call not taking $30k. Why don't you ask for 2 years earnings? So counter with $60k. It's worth a shot.

I just got an offer for 30,000 USD.

I declined. As you say blackbelt, why sell the goose when it's laying some nice eggs.

    lol slight problem...lol

Maybe if you built the site on another domain and redirected it....that will give you a bit of a fall back if it gets heated :-)

Why would you want to sell a site that just made you $2K? I would just keep it. If the site requires a lot of maintenance, I would sell it for 36K.

Here's an update for anyone that's interested.

I never did sell. The site got hit by the panda update and no longer ranks well at all. It's worthless.

    Should of taken the money..

Sorry to hear that. I sold a batch of some of my sites almost a year ago when they were all at their peaks and everyone questioned me as to why I would let them go.. the simple answer is it was my first BIG project and the amount I was paid for them gave me security to work on new projects and not have to worry about loosing everything and having to get a "real" job. Lesson learned. Do it again and take the payout. In the future if you have a nice bankroll and can take the risk of holding on to some web properties it may be worth it.
