Facebook! What have you done!!!

Oh My God! I just heard that Facbook is forcing the Timeline format to Pages beginning March 30th. They will be romoving apps and tabs in the new format! Please tell me I read this wrong!!!! Facebook Opens Timeline To All Biz Pages, Mandatory After 30 Days Of Curation | TechCrunch -->techcrunch(dot)com/2012/02/29/facebook-timeline-for-pages/<-- I am so disappointed right now. I can't imagine how many peoples efforts this is going to crush, and not just WSO's sold here, fanpage users in general. I really hope I am wrong and that I am falling for some BS internet rumour!

I don't like the change either. On my site, I could preview what the timeline was going to look like, and it still had my opt in form.

Could be a difficult one, but you have to move and adjust with sites like this. And WF is the place to be to help you get things up and running again!

Did you still have any apps? I have several apps that I use in my pages. Plus I just spent a quite a bit of time setting up my offline marketing business with Fanpages and the apps being a big part of it. I hope we still get to use the apps and tabs.

Apps will have huge problems with this.

Oh Mark why you gotta mess things up...

I have noticed that traffic to facebook has dropped somewhat and that people are simply not posting as much on it any more... they just seem to use it to spy on friends and family....

Are we witnessing the death of facebook?

I actually prefer twitter to facebook

"Death" may be a bit hyperbolic, but Timeline was a bad idea. They know it, and they are concerned. Henced the move up of the IPO.

If you are still investing time, money, and resources into helping Facebook keep everything on Facebook where their ads and interests are, you're doing it wrong.

Well if it messes with the apps, there's a buch of money and time I just wasted. UGH! Time to retreat, regroup, and restrategize! Definitly going to have to be more cautious aboout what WSO's I buy from know on. I am going to have to put some real thought on the long term implications of the wso's and possible changes to business down the road.

I don’t think the timeline feature would affect the applications that much. I personally use the timeline on my facebook and I don’t have any issues using applications at all. Although, the activity done with the applications is recorded in a slightly different format, it is not really hidden from your friends. Remember that Facebook knows that there are lot of marketers that use it as a SMM platform. So, they would not want to drive the advertisers and marketers away by intruding features that will not support IMing.

I closed my Facebook account last year, for reasons that I don't want to get into.

Looks like Im'ers are going to have to adapt, again...

my lone piece of advice: don't count on just one marketing arena. When the rules change, which they very often do, you won't be affected as adversely if you don't put all your eggs in one basket.

I was shocked when I noticed this message earlier today. This is 100's of working hours and 10's of 1000 dollars of my clients money wasted.

Am not looking forward to defend this. I think this will be a bulk in the relationship and trust my clients have with me.

Yeah, I am sure this can be leveraged to make money for some people, but this really is BIG stumbling block for a lot of us Warriors. The part that has me baffled the most is that it seems to me like the majority of the people I have talked to, polls I have read, and general news regarding the Timeline are not iin favor of it. Not sure why they feel the need to change things so drastically. Not to mention, the process of these changes have seemed to mess things up overall during the last few months. I hear reports of Fb being down for maintenance, not working, posts being repeated upwards of 4 times in a row, etc. Doesn't seem to me like the "changes" are going in the right direction.

From what i can tell you can still target a landing page app with fb ads, just not have it appear as a default to new visitors.

True. Pages can no longer display one of their custom applications as their default landing tab that non-fans first see when they visit.

The only alternative for brands now is to swap their Welcome app or other important app into one of the small tiles below the cover, and then repeatedly pin a link to the app at the top of their Timeline feed.

I know the new layout is going to be something to adjust to.

But to be honest, I like it.

Primarily because I can see a bit of innovation coming from companies as well as internet marketers.

I updated to the new layout on this page: 757 Sport Bikes | Facebook (trust me this isn't advertising, it's a local only thing)

    And quite frankly, I'm excited.

Now I don't like the way updates appear, but the cover photo + apps have a lot of potential from this.

An example of this can be seen if you visit my HTML tab (which isn't fixed yet). You'll notice it has it's own page now.

I'm not a fan of the new layout scheme for Timeline, but the new Facebook page layout could potentially be used to our advantage.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of all this timeline business. As other have said this could adversly affect a lot of businesses that rely on the old style.

On a personal note I'm becoming tired of these constant facebook changes to everything, if it was up to me I'd revert it back to 2006 format.

This is just like every other facebook update.

People get really angry, threaten to boycott facebook for a day...

And then they get used to it. Overall facebook is much better than when I got into it 5 years ago.

    We will all adapt.

That's right Simon. Facebook (and Google) are always evolving and it's not done yet. They've figured it out. We should all learn from what they do. (That's not saying there may not be issues)

Look at it this way marketers that eBook you put out on fb is now obsolete. Make a new one and sell it again.

Just don't rely on it as your main source of traffic.

I'm working on a new page. I have to read the TOS because some have said you can't have "Click Me" and arrows on the cover.

    I'm checking into it now.

A lot of nice changes with Timeline.

Here is the page I'm working on:

    Squeeze Page Builder | Facebook

I have an arrow pointing to the "Special Offer" that may need to be changed.

I heard direct call to actions inside of the cover photo is against the TOS and really think you should get the cover photo changed ASAP and if anything, just delete it for now. It'd be better to have a bland page than no page at all.

The knee jerk reaction for me is over and I see more opportunities now. Still alittle peeved and the time and money invested in the old layout and the strategies that went along with my plan, but most of them (plans) will be able to move over to the new layout with a little tweeking. Survival of the fittest right?

Exactly. You can't use the cover display area for advertisements or call to actions.

      Straight from the Facebook website:

"Note: This space is not meant for promotions, coupons, or advertisements. Your cover photo should not be primarily text-based or infringe on anyone else's copyright.

Use a unique image that represents your Page. This might be a photo of a popular menu item, album artwork or a picture of people using your product. Be creative and experiment with images your audience responds well to.

Cover images must be at least 399 pixels wide and may not contain:
      • Price or purchase information, such as "40% off" or "Download it at our website"
      • Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page's About section
      • References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features
      • Calls to action, such as "Get it now" or "Tell your friends"
      • All cover images are public, which means anyone visiting your Page will be able to see the image you choose.
Covers must not be false, deceptive or misleading, and must not infringe on third parties' intellectual property.
      • You may not encourage or incentivize people to upload your cover image to their personal timelines.

I actually like Pinterest, but I agree with you, I hate the timeline for personal accounts and I'm not expecting to like it any better for Pages.

I just don't know what they think is user friendly or readable about bouncing back and forth between two columns.

I would imagine it's got something to do with getting more advertising out of their site... it's the only logical explanation.

They would also be quite aware that majority of Facebook users are now on mobile devices and you've probably noticed there is currently no advertising on Facebook mobile applications -- well at least not in the standard Blackberry and iPhone Facebook applications I use.

So it won't be long before our mobile screens are littered with adverts from them as well. That's when people will get really annoyed.
