A question about using mailchimp under this scenario?

I am new to the world of IM - and quite frankly, I have been taken aback with some of the stories I have heard about Mail Chimp suddenly pulling the plug on people (who were admittedly in breach of their rules).

My situation (I think), is quite different in that I will not be partaking in any affiliate marketing programs. I have a (highly technical/scientific/academic) paid journal which I want to create a squeeze page for and get people to subscribe to. I do not ever envisage using affiliate marketing for this particular business.

Since almost all of the "horror stories" I have heard about MailChimp involve a rule breach (invariably involving affiliate marketing or some derivative thereof), I feel that the risk of having the plug pulled is relatively remote - or am I being naive?.

The propspect of having up to 5000 subscribers before having to pay for AR services is a particularly seductive one to me too - since as a startup, I have no real guarantee that the magazine will even "take off" and allthough $19 per month (e.g. AWebber) does not seem a lot, it all adds up (hosting etc), and I need to keep expenses down and let the business "pay its own way".

I understand however that moving from one AR service to another is generally best avoided, since there is a high attrition rate. I would like some feedback to help me ascertain the risk of the plug being pulled from underneath me by MailChimp given the type of demographic and business I have (broadly) outlined above.

Put simply, what is the likelihood of mailchimp pulling the plug if I am quite sure that I will not be promoting any affiliate marketing with the list?

As far as I can see you should not have any problems with MC. I use them (both free and paid) and they are very responsive and easy to use. The key like you noted was violating TOS, and when that happens, any company would zap you. I thnk they have a 2000 name list limit on free accounts though, as well as a 12,000 message limit on free accounts.

Give them a shot. They'll work fine!
