Facebook NEW Fan Page changes - How to Market now?

Hi everyone!

Facebook made changes again - this time with my favorite Fan page profile! Fan Page is
gonna adopt the timeline layout as well...Welcome page is gone (sort of) after this update..
All those APP's for the 'welcome' pages and reveal app's + those strategies with the profile
Banner and the top 5 small banners might be all but 'down the drain' with this coming
change. Time and money wasted [unless you have build your list ].

I wonder HOW this will now effect us as Marketers?

Off-cause new opportunities means - potential $ - but that means new learning + $ spend
to get up new strategies with the new Fan page profile.

See the New fan page in action here at your favorite Coffee shop
https://www.facebook.com/Starbucks

Any ideas + products + strategies with his new set up?

Thks for your input...

Gert

For the person who still has to get their Starbucks coffee, and just wants the quick facts:

    1. Default landing tabs are gone
    2. Tabs are still here but are wider now- 810px
    3. You can now message fan pages
    4. Timeline will automatically come to pages on March 30th.

    thks

    Thanks for the heads up!

The ability to message fan page owners is pretty cool. Could imagine this would be great for finding page owners to cross-promote with.

Jay - you are welcome -it is just a pain and a lo$t that those welcome tabs and reveal pages now cant be used like before. But there for sure will be new ways to MARKET soon. Was hoping some people with experience in that field would post here. On the other hand there are a few of these threads opened just today on the same line

I have to agree with this. Just means another avenue to find affiliates which could in turn lead to more profits.

I like change and I think it benefits the IM community as a whole, it gives us another chance to innovate and figure out additional ways to add to our bottom line.

The fanpages are way better for marketing purposes now than they were before. There are so many opportunities.

Why do you think the welcome tabs are gone ? They are actually better and bigger now. Almost 1000px with no distractions.

For example you can now have a huge headline with an arrrow pointing to LIKE which is now right next to an image.

Your landing page tab can be huge and have nothing else on the page. This will increase optins and LIKEs.

Elmar thanks - you are right that the 'welcome tabs are NOT gone' [even though I have not said they are gone ] welcome page tab remains but cannot be made the landing page. In another word, this means no more landing page...all goes to the Timeline - right? [I think - I still study the new set up

Hi, no we can't brand in the cover at all. The new guidelines state that the new Page cover image is not allowed to display contact information, website addresses or calls to action...

The thing is you could set up your sales page with a default tab in the past. Now you can't.

So you cannot do any real direct response stuff.

Timeline is NOT good for branding as you are not allowed to put phone numbers, web addresses or call to actions in the cover photo. The examples you show are for personal pages but business pages are not allowed. This really hurts us. FB made this change so they could force you to use their advertising to point to your landing pages. I'm not liking it so far.

Ok I see what you mean.
I think that people can still be smart in making the most of the Timeline Photo area.

I wouldn't rely on having people manually type out my Website Address to access it.
I'll keep an eye out to see if Facebook takes action against people for using Call to Actions in the Cover Photo.

re: the cover photo -- It's ok for branding. It's not as good for driving traffic from faceBook to your main site as the default tabs were. But you can use the imagery to emphasize and communicate your brand.

I would actually think that Timeline will do more to enhance your brand than the old layout would. It forces businesses to provide content. It eliminates the main emphasis placed on "like our page to get...". Of course you can still like-gate, it just takes visitors another step to determine if they should. So you'll likely get a higher quality fan base than before. Which, overall, is better for your brand and social media time management.

BTW-- Contact info, web addresses & call to actions aren't supposed to be in personal Timeline Cover Photos either.

I kind of agree with your point - it really limit us not allowing us to 'create our own cover pages' + and I think - yes "$ talks" now at FB. I am sure part of the reason is to 'force' us using FB AD's more

I like their AD'S + the Fan Page Timeline in general - but not the restrictions. Hay at the end 'they are the Boss'......

Branding has nothing to do with phone numbers, web addresses or call to actions.

        Its about your company image.

Personally I think its a good thing to elimate some of the scammier looking pages that were beginning to show up on facebook.

Facebook have made this switch to stop people using default landing pages which were beginning to get ridiculous and providing a poor customer experience. Just think of the number of scammy Facebook page apps that appeared...(The ones that automatically directed people to an affiliate link etc)

Facebook are essentially saying.....if you want to market here....do it the right way. There is nothing wrong with that!

Yes you could pay for advertising to your landing pages....and thats great...

If you look at the new platform it now benefits people who market ethically without hiding behind their page...

        Thats my opinion anyways

I agree, branding is not all about URLs and Calls To Action. Branding has become more and more minimal in the heads of many marketers, but that is not necessarily a good thing.

A web address is not a brand, it is a location.

A logo is not a brand, it is a symbol.

Neither tell you anything about the company, the products or anything else about the brand. So how can you expect someone to respond to a CTA?

Where is the engagement happening? How are you educating anyone about your products? Bunging a www on a picture wouldn't incite me to rush to my computer to find out more.

I want to see something that piques my interest, that makes me smile or take a step back to think about it, or something that I can connect with. No one knows a brand until they have engaged with it.

If we want to market on Facebook, we need to embrace FACEBOOK's culture, and not try to squish that square peg into our round marketing hole.

Facebook is a place where people go to have fun with their friends, to find something new and/or interesting and to see what is happening in other places. So we need to market that way.

So Here is what I suggest..

There is nothing stopping anyone putting text into a Cover picture, so you can draw attention to your accomplishments by selling yourself....'Author of best selling Report/WSO'.... 'writer of great PLR article'...'Creator of'.....

If you catch the attention of people, they will come closer for a better look. Isn't that the point of smart marketing? To get the interest growing in someone so they take a closer look?

I'm sure there will be much written in the next few weeks both loving and hating Timeline. Sorry - but I really like it.

Thanks - valuable points you mentioned, many start-up FB marketers who have JUST learned the FB Marketing Funnel 'thing' and have perhaps just [recently] launch that strategies [paid for it] are in shock now - knowing 'somethings' will have to change now and that means 'new-co$t' again.....

Same here - I was just ready [after the learning curve + software for profile banners and photo banners] to include to my Offline service and BAM

Well the only thing that's constant is 'change' and FB WILL CHANGE AGAIN - however I think this 'Fan page time line is following the personal profile format and that means it 'POINT TO THEIR LONG TERM STRATEGY' - So back to the drawing board.......

        Guys,

Sorry to be an annoying newbie, but I was just about to try to get started with Facebook. I had created an account and was contacting someone to help me build the graphics for the Facebook landing page.

Can anyone explain a quick summary of what this means for someone just getting started? Do I need to wait this out and let the designers and contractors catch up with the news? To me it looks like the graphics are staying the same, so I can proceed.

Also, I was going to use SocialOomph, which I already use for Twitter, to feed my fan pages. Can I still do that?

        Thx...

Some of the graphics have changed...there is now a cover image which is a start and the side banner is gone.

Also the default landing page is gone so you may wanna rethink that one...

Now I get it I think. I was looking at the Star Bucks and see that the sidebar is gone. Okay, so is the cup of coffee on the top left their "cover image"? Or can you send me to an example of a Facebook Fan Page with a basic design that shows the new Cover Page is Star Bucks is not normative?

Also, when I look at the StarBucks landing page, it does not look like a Timeline to me. A timeline of their posts - is that what they mean?

Well the big companies are quick to adjust to the new changes :https://www.facebook.com/Starbucks#!/nike

              > The new fanpage timeline will have Cover Banner [photo] like the above shows with certain limits in what you are allowed to 'put their' as a marketer or business owner - example No arrows pointing to the 'like' button for your visitor to 'take action' + many more guidelines

Can read more here New Facebook Pages with Timeline Design – 12 Pros & Cons

              or here > http://www.allfacebook.com/facebook-...-guide-2012-03

If you still see the 'older versions' it means the owner have not 'activate' the new one - until 30th March ALL fan pages will be 'force-changed' to the timeline format [just like the personal profile timeline] as thats is FB long-term strategy. So 'we' better position ourselves accordingly if we want to 'play the FB game'....

Marie Smith is giving me the best advice so far and I think we must not 'throw the baby out with the bath water' with the new changes - especially regarding the guidelines for the new 'cover-photo' - Perhaps 'certain' things as a Business owner 'are allowed' when done the right way

I think the best approach is to 'learn' and 'be-informed' first before 'jumping-the-gun' - maybe at the end we as FB 'Marketers' can Profit more with the new changes than the old format....

And Marie Smith is a front runner in Social Media - this is her take on the new FB fanpage timeline changes > Facebook Timeline Cover Image - What Are The Rules?

          Thx...

If the designer/contractor is paying any attention they'll probably know they have to make some changes to their product offerings. Just in case you may want to tell them you're looking for graphics compatible with the new Timeline specs.

You can read more about the changes to design and policies at:

Hi Chris, they are for me, you click LIKE but the script doesn't push the user to the next page, it just stays on the same page unless you click refresh.

What script are you using ?

Many of the FB Marketers are already emailing like crazy and have emergency Webinars
to deal with the new changes - surely some advice will be free for existing subscribers/buyers but surely with this new 'opportunity' will come 'new product$$$' - especially if you are dealing with offline clients 'you and I' must be wise in taking the next step and not follow the 'emotional-roller-coaster' that is coming via the IM channel - even here on WF [WSO's]

    Hi,

I actually like the new layout bit gutted that it stops driving traffic but i think it looks good, liking the pinned posts as well, I don't think the learning curve should be as steep this time if i'm honest, who knows lol ...

    Thanks

Has anyone figured out how to place an e-commerce app on the main landing page? I see that if you use an ecommerce app like Payvment, a "Shop" button tab shows below the cover picture, but that is far from ideal.

Also, is there a way of still doing fan gating?

While we're on the subject of the new Fanpages, does anyone know how to create a progressive coupon for a fanpage? Any help much appreciated.

I have been playing with a couple of my pages in the new design.

It looks like the 2 step reveals will still work, just can't make them the default landing tab for the page. You can customise the tab images though, so re-naming that tab from "Welcome" or whatever it was to "Free Download Here" or whatever suits your reveal and add an image to the tab. I don't know if the 'no calls to action' rules apply to those tab images though.

I'm darned if I can get it to work UNLESS you hit refresh on the page the LIKE redirects you to.

But users won't know to do this to get the lead magnet.

Have you managed to resolve how to force the LIKE button to refresh the target page?

at this point it is unclear if this is a bug (page not auto refreshing) or this is how FB wants it to function (wierd)

maybe the call to action will now need to be "....click LIKE and refresh the page to....."

Well, the best part is that you still have the option to put two tabs/applications on your main page just besides images section.

you can still offer deals/discounts through that coloumn..

I think the 'top-left-under cover photo' in the 'About' area is real valuable FB Real Estate and we must maximize that area - With valuable 'link' [Site/blog/fanpage] as well...

Now that the tabs can be 810 px (have also read 850 px) wide....do you think we could have the complete money page of our website...in an iframe.....hidden behind a fangate or something....

Traffic to the tab to be driven using FB advertising and/or the the Tab visual image....that can have the call to action...

    Please share your views..

I am not sure 100% how it works now - I think the tab-page as you have described above - you can drive traffic from the FB ads directly - but you can't make it a 'landing page' with a 'reveal-tab' like before [after 31st March]. People arriving to your fanpage via search in FB will land on your New fanpage Timeline page. But with this new changes there will be many new opportunities [within the iframe setup + other ways]..

      thks

  • At first I was a little annoyed by this, but I'm starting to cool down. I think this will be a good thing viewed properly. Now we can message fanpage owners - perfect reason to message them is to get them TIMELINE'd. The Fanpage like refresh bug, will be fixed soon so we can still icentivize, and we have bigger spaces to play with...

Can't change the default image so make sure your icons and caption titles are enticing.

    That's my take so far.

    Guys & Gals....

Here is a great all in one advanced free info point of call read about Facebook Timelines!

Facebook Timeline For Pages - Product Guide - from TechCrunch

For those of you that are "still" into marketing / lead gen / landers / tab reveals, just simply and quickly move on!

Yes you have no doubt spent Zillions of $ on various "fb shortcuts" to develop certain "fb services" for yourselves and your clients in the past year, there are over 90+ WSO just for "fb apps" etc alone... so why do we say move on quickly?

Well, these changes that FB have "sprung" on everyone have been in dev for over 3 years+ FBdev do not just do something and hope it works anymore (they learnt their lesson with facebook markup coding in 2008 on!) Timelines is a variation on a completely new way to interact with people and products... we do not mean "new" as in NEW, but new as in "lets get rid of all the "spam/hype/crap/poor reveal graphics/yadayada" that makes FB look a bit ****e compared to Pinterest & the other "2012" social/networking platforms that are raking it it on the back of statements like...

"Facebook is so 2009" or "Why are you on Facebook its crap" or "Hey little puppy dog come play!" (ooops sorry we made that one up!)

In fact wasting so much of YOUR valuable time moaning, whining and thinking "oh god why did I spunk $295 on a facebook reveal tab crapo graphics code package" WILL NOT earn you any bank from the changes!

So simply "Research" "Learn" and "Decide" HOW, WHY and WHEN you WILL make some wonga-o-la-dolla from the updates...

There are TONS of ways you can IM on the new changes and so not foget that "Facebook Timeline for Business" is an OPTION for you to make $$$$$ on "client work or services" HOW?? Well you have all the details of your OLD FB clients/users/members/fans/yadayada just SIMPLY get onto them and say...

EXAMPLE of WORKING EMAIL/TELE SCRIPT we wrote...

"Hi Frankie, Just wanted to let you know that as of TODAY, we at AcMe Facebook Marketing have managed to secure a "BRAND NEW WAY" to get high resolution, eye catching and mouth watering images of YOUR clients "eating/playing/trying/demoing/reviewing/yadyyada" on a brand new (here comes the 1st signup on the spot word!) ADDITION to the services we ran for you last year/month, as you are ALREADY a client of our services, we can (wait for it, here comes the 2nd signup word!) ADD this service to your plan/package/membership/yadayada, for only $$$ a month! As things are a bit tight, we are also giving you the chance to get 6 extra months service for the cost of a year... yes you heard me Frankie, you get 18 months of "AcMe Facebook Marketing" services and updates for the price of 12... how does that sound? (wait for a min, answer any questions with your researched/info/yadayada) then take their ORDER

Always remember to say THANK YOU, even if they DO NOT signup! ALWAYS remember to be polite and say GOODBYE and I WILL speak/email/skype/kiss with you soon

So there you go... we have been marketing the new "Timeline" for over 6 months, we keep it simple, we wait for the next "announced" changes and GET ahead of the IM curve by doing lots of HOMEWORK on the subject first!

Hope that helps anyone a little bit

Well "like it" or "not like it" will not make a difference with Facebook. As Marketers, we adjust and PROFIT or complain and PAY.... It might not 'look' easy but keep on educate/read and align yourself with the 'fb-pack-leaders' and see what they DO - not just what they 'say' to you - and you will very soon 'ride the incoming wave' too succe$$ TheeBook - hang in there, lots of opportunities comes with this new changes....

The best advise I can give is to learn and follow the front runners in FB Marketing - Mari Smith is in my opinion 1 of the best [if not the best] with Social Media including Facebook. I would encourage you to have a look again here at Mari's blog >Facebook Timeline Cover Image - What Are The Rules?
