What is a good shopping cart software?

I am building a website for a restaurant and the owner wants an "order online" button that allows customers to order takeout food via internet. He specifically wants the program to be able to automatically fax the orders to him after it is placed, so that he can keep tabs on the orders and get the food prepared in rel time. Is there any shopping cart software that allows this feature? (The ones I've looked at so far only email you the order and shipping details, but don't fax it in real time.)

PLEEEASE help me with this, I have a deadline to meet, and have searched everywhere, but am totally new to the world of adding online order options to websites.

I would recommend checking out Magento eCommerce and find a plugin that will fax the orders, my girlfriend has Magento and there are tons of plugins, which they call extensions, that will do everything and anything, and if you can't find it, you can get custom extensions built.

If Magento is too hardcore for what they need, looking into other ecommerce systems and look for plugins, especially: "order to fax" search keywords

As you might expect, shopping carts come in a wide range of prices, from free to thousands of dollars. Does that mean that the more you spend, the better cart you get? Not necessarily.

There are several free shopping carts that are very powerful and full of features; for example, OSCommerce and ZenCart. Both of these carts are completely free and offer most of the features you would expect in a modern shopping cart: unlimited products, connections to the major payment gateways, credit card payments, real-time shipping prices, discount customer groups, multi language, and more.

One small advise: Never agree to a deadline, before you understand the impact of all specs...

I think most of the shoppingcarts mentioned will do the job, although some are for this specific reason a bit 'overweighted' I think... as for faxing: it highly depends if the site will be on a shared hosting service or a dedicated machine, but if you use shared hosting services, you also could consider an email to fax online service... just send the order confirmation to that email address and the order gets real time faxed... So no difficult or expensive plugins/modifications needed...

I agree.... You should never bind yourself with deadlines unless you have the tools in your sack.

Since you have done that, I will follow the instructions above. Forward all those email orders to "Net to Fax" facility for a small monthly fee.

May be there are service providers offering such services for free in earlier months.

      I hope this help you

There are, but I think that Mixse better can concentrate on the fax integration... he already took a look at some solutions I understood, but they didn't meet the faxing requirement... I think with the email to fax solution he can use any eCommerce package he wants and feels comforable with...

But personally I agree with you that WordPress with an eCommerce plugin is a great solution, since the CMS part of most eCommerce specific packages are quite 'weak' with regards to the CMS part...

I built a site for a client and used 3dcart

It isn't cheap, but it is very reliable and expandable. The client has used it for nearly 2 years and is extremely happy with it.

There won't be any plugins that will allow you to send fax via email. You need to subscribe to a service that does that.

However, there is a free service that will allow you to send a fax via email.
You can find out more info here: Free Email to Fax Phone Service using TPC.int

You basically send and email to remote-printer.First_Last@13135551234.iddd.tpc.int

replacing First and Last and the # with the actual info and it should work.
