SEO Ethics - Let's Try This Again

My last thread was deleted with for no reason, so lets try this again.

Is anyone else bothered by people selling products claiming to teach you to rank for terms in google with millions of competing pages in very little time.

These types of products are rampant and often the author will provide an example of a term they rank for.

Anyone with minimal SEO knowledge will immediately see that ranking for the example terms will result in little to know traffic (because no one is searching for that term), but more importantly, the actual traffic is often less than 10-20,000, when the ad copy claims it is over 10 million.

I guess I'm just tired of seeing products like this that prey on people that have no knowledge of SEO.

Regards,
Chris

What's worse, people selling these lame "products" or people coming onto boards like this every day asking:

"How do I get on first page Google for keyword 'new banana clock shoes in thailand'"

    ???

There must be some type of market for this.

Point taken, but I still feel the products are misrepresented.

Well, I don't believe in misrepresenting ANY product; not just SEO products. These aren't the only type of products that are misrepresented. This sort of thing is happening all over. The only thing we can do is to make sure that WE are not among those who are practicing business this way.

Because there was absolutely no reason for it to be deleted. Got it? Good.

      Oh I agree completely Angela.

I do feel SEO is one of the topics most often misrepresented. Someone new to SEO would likely take proof of ranking for a word such as "widgets sale", which has over 18 million competing pages (broad match) in Google.

Which of course means very little. The exact match results for "widgets sale" are 1,550, which of course could be accomplished without any effort. But someone new to SEO doesn't know the difference between broad and exact search. In addition to that, they wouldn't know to check out how often that particular term is searched for. If they did in most cases they would find that the "proof" terms have little to no search traffic.

Yet people people still spend their money on these products.

Anyway, I will stop ranting. I think we're all on the same page.

For the same reason the original snake oil salesmen were so successful back in the day; people love to be taken for a ride and sold on a product that they think is the absolute bomb. They're going to learn a secret that nobody else knows, which makes them feel great, or powerful or something.

Doesn't make it right, not by a long shot, and personally I wouldn't do that because I try to maintain a high level of integrity in my business, and ripping people off doesn't fit with that.

Nevertheless, people still sell snake oil all day long. Look at the supplement industry instead of IM. I'm sure that some of those supplements work, but do the ALL? I highly doubt it. Same thing with drugs (I mean pharmaceuticals) - ever read the "could cause...." lists on those things? There are almost infinite examples of people selling absolute crap in our society but its never going to change unless the buyers do first.

Indeed, great point Jonathan. I just wish we were allowed to point out this deception when we see it. Anyway, we were all newbies at one point and hopefully those that fall for this will learn quick

@tntrader - yeah I agree. I guess it's places like this that we get to talk about what's good and what isn't; what's a ripoff and what isn't.

@Thomas Belknap - what's so bad about this thread that it bears reporting?

The last identical post he created was deleted. You are not suppose to continue creating the same thread if it was deleted. I didn't see the previous thread.

        OH No Tomas!

What the heck. I changed up the wording. Deal with it. I don't see what the problem is either.

I'm showing restraint with my response to you as well. Get over it.

If you need to restrain yourself over something like this then you have should seek help in anger management.

Interesting. I didn't see it either - perhaps the tone or content has been changed enough to warrant this one being whitelisted??

I don't see how simply the fact that it was previously deleted means it should be again though, it should be judged on its own merit, in my view.

I have also wondered about why they show these stupid examples on many of their salespages but I've come to the conclusion that either:

    a) they are misleading the newbies,....or

    b) they don't want to give away the REAL niches in which they have REAL rankings.

I recently had a dilemma with the last one my self. I wanted to show some people on my list that it was possible to dominate the full first page of MSN and most of the first page on Google for a few good search terms and I took a screenshot as proof. Then it hit me... I don't wanna give away these two niches. They are just too good

So I ended up showing the examples but without the url or any text that could give my niches away showing... all in all not a very good way to do it as it doesn't look good...

First, what difference does it make why the first was deleted? And why ramble on about it?

Seems a good topic for discussion to me.

I agree, about the SEO stuff!
I can be on the first page of Google for a keyword that has little or no competition in days.

And, along those same lines, is the screen-shots of earnings.
I could spend $1,000 a day too show $500 earnings.

I think there is a problem with business owners in general online and off that don't do even a little bit of trying to compare or learn even a small amount of the process when it comes to outsourcing anything.

You can see in some of those "Offline Cow" posts where a business had already payed thousands of dollars for a site that does nothing and has no clue.

I'm not suggesting that we need to know everything there is to know but at least do some basic research before you start spending money.

How hard is it, especially now with the Internet to spend an evening online searching around for SEO and the other terms one would find on a sales page for a service.

When I had businesses offline and needed something that I knew nothing about I still had an opportunity to call around and talk to different suppliers about the widget and why I needed that particular widget.

After talking to several widget companies I came to the conclusion that the gold plated widget wouldn't do a better job after all.

Yeah I get a few of those - and it's just about impossible to get OFF their lists too.

I totally agree on the earnings issue too - people love showing clickbank account earnings but few will ever show the corresponding Adwords accounts. Gross doesn't mean squat if you don't have at least some profit margin.

What perplexes me is a claim that 'with this method you can rank number 1 in goolge for any keywords'.
So if everyone who buys it uses the method for the same keywords then they are all ranked number 1 ?

    Exactly.

Now, here is a question for those of you that get it.

Is it wrong to ask questions about the terms one ranks for, say in a WSO thread where they are selling a product claiming to be a magic SEO solution?

It depends on how you ask. If it's a serious question, probably no problem. If it's asked in a confrontational way to argue with the seller - when you have not purchased or read the WSO - yes it could be seen as wrong.
