Which Broadband in The UK For Our Work

Hi all

I thought about where best to ask this question and as my broadband connection affects everything I do in my online business, it definately affects my ability to make money

My BT Infinity contract is ended so I'm out looking for a better deal for phone and broadband and possibly chuck in the tv.

Currently paying £110 for sky (got to get rid of some of that!) and £46 for BT phone and broadband

Had a nightmare two years ago trying to speak to people who clearly had no idea what I way saying at Virgin so despite them being cheaper I gave up.

What about Sky broadband - heaping it all together at sky would be the cheapest deal for me by far but only if their broadband connection is good.

I need unlimited usage and the faster the connection the better - I'm impatient

Well fellow warriors, hoping someone out there can give some feedback on this incredibly important issue

cheers chaps and chapesses!
ps, I'm in Essex, about 20 miles outside Lundun!

You really only have two choices for speed. Virgin or BT, I have Virgin but at times I wish I didnt!
£110 for sky what the hell!

I know how much I hate virgin media right now, but when I eventually move, I'm seriously thinking about having virgin media as a backup to an ADSL provider, so if one goes down I have the other to fall back on. Ha ha wishful thinking on my part.

BE broadand seems to get the thumbs up from which.

to be fair, depends on usage and how reliable you want it, also if its that vital I would go for a duel broadband that jumps if it goes down (we use this method for our taxi dispatch software), also have you ever tried getting a private server for your internet?, we are in the process of getting a voip system on a third interdependent internet server.

sounds like a good idea, BT has never failed me, not ever and I do a lot of uploading and downloading and need the unlimited usage and good speeds - so I have never needed a backup - fingers x that doesn't change if I stay with them

hey Charanjit - you must be a tech - I am far from that! I am now proud to be able to do pretty much most things involving Site building, cpanel, even some scripting issues but owning my own server!! Shock horror, I would be wayyy too scared for that. How long did it take you to learn all that or am I just assuming its scary techy stuff and in reality its all good.

It reminds me of how terrified I was of cpanel when I first encountered it and now I know you barely touch a portion of options there I wish someone had told me that in the beginning

Cheer guys for your feedback - looks like BT is still a winner - I threatened to leave and have knocked off £10 a month - now if I can just cull those tv's...

silly as it sounds I am just a taxi base owner who got fed up wit poor quality internet, we run at the moment one bt business line , in six months it has never gone down but it spikes which can be a pain i.e we can have up to 100 jobs waiting and when it spikes it takes that extra 30 second or so for them to go out, the only reason why I know about the private serves is its the only viable method if using voip phone systems. As they say in business you get what you pay for, the server for the phone lines is around £80 a month, and so far the telephone system in the past 4 weeks has given us no problems but we save around £4,000 a month on call diverts. And before any one asks no I was not with bt for call diverts actual a third party that was only making 0.1p off each call. Landline wholesale rate is 0.8p and mobile is avg is 7.8p - trust me knowing them two figures throws off all sales people when they try and sell you phone lines.

Virgin media - fiber optic !! never had no problems - and can get about 16mb and that's fast enough for 3 computers online at once.

    - Dont get sky - very very poor download speeds

BT = Rip off... says "unlimited" until you run over THEN £10 per GB

Heard TalkTalk is good for average surfing / working

I'm with Sky for my home connection at the moment and very pleased with them. Amazing value for £7 a month.

Tried BT... and after an 18 month contract that kicked me offline every time I tried uploading via FTP, you have no idea how happy I was to finally be rid of them. I'll never use BT (for anything) again.

ADSL 24 could be an option... I was with them for a few years but they switched over to a different network and things weren't the same.

Zen is another good option, very reliable and great customer support. Not the cheapest, but probably the best I've used.

Zen gets my vote. I've been using them for years. Fast, reliable, brilliant customer support. There is also no throttle, so you get pure broadband. No slowing down at peak times. I also use them for my phone.

I've got Sky. Excellent connection, no down-time (we had glitches with BT) and the customer services is great. It isn't that much faster than BT, though.

You'll need to see what your area can get, speed-wise, as you might already be on the best.

    Wow this feedback is excellent!!

I need to hear from real people doing real online work and you came through

Now I'm more confused though. I use BT Infinity and my mate whose with Sky (as a job) reckons that BT cant be beaten for speed and efficiency atm.

The scary thing about this is, you end up in a contract and if its ****e you are stuck with it.

My call to BT earlier was interesting

I was put through to their outsourced call centre on the other side of the world. For a change, a really lovely chirpy chap spoke to me - he actually sounded happy in his job (usually they sound annoyed you dared to call and interrupt them)

He transferred me to the next level in UK to convince me not to cancel any elements of my contract.

When I then mentioned leaving altogether they started knocking money off and then I got upgraded again to another sales person who could offer me more discounts.

Just goes to show doesn't it - you have to keep leaving in order to get the best deal

If you leave sky they ask you back for half price - I sooo need to do that. Or get one of these new accounts where you get access to multiple programmes, movies etc for about £7 a month

Anyway, I'm gonna keep checking for feedback and make more enquiries and

    Well thanks guys

Plusnet is the only provider I would use (and do). It's the one I connect all my customers to. We don't have high speed, cable broadband in my area, so can't comment on providers such as BE - we can't get them.

I've been recommending Plusnet for years and so far (fingers crossed) they have never let me down. Their call centres are friendly, helpful, in the UK and they actually know what they are talking about.

ps - whoever said TalkTalk clearly doesn't do my job! They are the single, worst provider in my experience of many customers. I had the unfortunate experience of finding my old provider transferred to them. My speed dropped from 6MBs to 0.25MBs. I changed to Plusnet and all was good again.

BE isn't cable broadband it's ADSL using BT infrastructure.

My bad. I just put my phone number into their site and it is available in our area. Last time I tried, a few months ago, they weren't.

I am in a non cable area and use Plusnet. When I had a problem they really helped me to sort it out and now I enjoy the best speeds I ever have out here in rural staffordshire. I am on a 60GB per month package at £9.99 per month and usually use around 40GB per month. Downfall is their upload speeds but I am usually just doing odd jobs with themes and wordpress plugins which are normally quite small. Would be tedious if I was uploading GB per day.j

    +1 for Plusnet.

Speed is an issue for me but that is mainly because my house is far from the exchange.

Otherwise, have not suffered any issues with Plusnet for over 7 years.
