Your views on .co domains

I was just wondering what everyone's views were on the suffix .co on a url?

The reason I ask is the domain I am after all the usual .com .info .net etc have been taken. I could get it with hyphens but I do not like it as much.

If anyone can help with any thoughts I would appreciate it.

Sorry if this has been asked before here on the WF but I could not find any info on it.

Regards

I don't like them, myself ... but undeniably, for SEO they're exactly the same as any international TLD. Google has announced this openly.

They're newer, of course, and there aren't so many of them issued, and some people don't use them when they want to rank highly, so you certainly won't (yet) see all that many actually ranking well in the SERP's, but they do have exactly the same ranking potential as a .com or whatever else.

(The same is true of .tv and .me domains - Google now considers all three of these as "international TLD's" because some people use them that way. And says so - there's no secret about it).

However ... you can still lose traffic to the owner of the .com, and resale value will be worse, and some people may even "not like the appearance as much", and so on.

Exactly what Alexa said. Also, it depends on what you plan on doing with the domain. If your intention is to sell the domain, forget .co. They are difficult to sell, in comparison with a .com. If your intention is just to use it for search engine traffic, then any main TLD (extension) will do just fine.

A .co domain name is like Alexa says just as good for seo and ranking with, it's a global extension although originally it wasn't, it got re branded into a global extension. There's a risk of losing traffic through the .com as well. They have worked well with some companies re branding with a .co. A great example is Overstock who bought O.CO for a lot of money and others have done the same such as google, amazon and godaddy. I spent a lot of time resaerching .co's and even bought some for reselling them and made some decent money off them as well. However, they will never reach a .com and possibly not a .net. Anyway if you don't like the .com with a hyphen then i would say go for the .co they're not that expensive anymore since the launch in 2010 they dropped the price and the rebill price too!

If you want to make something seriously then you must get EMD/TLD!

Could you change the name of your product/project/site?

Or tweak it? If it was a marketing company called Essential Web, it becomes essentialwebmarketing.com for example?

I have a couple and don't like them. Even I mistakenly mistype my own domain name as .com instead of .co. It's just not something people are used to typing.

SEO ... ditto Alexa. Also, they are too expensive.

There's the biggest problem, right there. And that's exactly why I've avoided them, myself.

Personally, I see the .co's as a money grab, just like the .mobi domains.

While I agree with the sentiments by others above about.co, I am not sure where the web will be in five to ten yars on this.
My guess is that they will become more common and "respected" by people and in say 20 years the resale on .co will be much the same as the .coms.
I may be wrong of course, but I did take a punt and bought relevant top level .co domains for our trademarks and search terms we compete against, not so much for our own immediate SEO, but rather to lock out others in terms of good TLD's.
    All the best

I do not have any .co domain and would not consider to buy them... and as for financial transactions from a .co domain I think of it twice, before I decide not to do it...

It's not as bad as .cn domains... but somehow sites with a .co domain have a negative resonance for me.

And if you call be prejudiced (if I spell it righ), you're right... and I'm aware of it (and do not like it).

Thank you all very much for your help. I think I am going to swerve the .co domain!!

I have now come up with a decision as I have changed my keywords slightly.

I can now get the following as are both available:-
    www.Keyword1-Keyword2-Keyword3.com or www.Keyword1Keyword2Keyword3.net

Now to make up my mind (still not sure about the Hyphens!!!)

Thanks again for your help warriors.

Jack if you using this site other than to brand a product or company a hyphen won't make much difference as the visitors will come to your site for the keywords and not the brand so i would not worry. I certainly won't go for a .co if you can get the .org or .net or .com with a hyphen
