New Facebook Fanpage Rules

So the new facebook rules are no landing pages, no welcome page for your fanpage. Your fanpage is going to look like your profile page's timeline. Some love the timeline look and som fb users prefer the simple old fb profile page which was more similar to a fanpage.

So how do you still get fans/likes? This brings us all back to basics... to your website and/or landingpage. ADD FACEBOOK LIKE BOXES AND BUTTONS. I suppose other old-skool IM stuff still works, such as email marketing (get your list to be aware of your facebook page) and offline marketing (if you are a restaurant for example to still promote your facebook page in your restaurant, flyers, menu, adding QR codes, really get all staff to develop customer rapport, etc)

I don't suppose facebook changed their rules to force businesses to advertise with them. Afterall you still can advertise and customise facebook ads on your own timeline, might as well ensure that the ads are all your own products. Ahh.. facebook sure are sneaky

The new FB page still has landing pages, just no default landing tab. That absolutely blows and is intended for additional advertising. Can we say public launch?

I wanted to post some links to resources, but my post count isn't high enough.

    Instead, here's something useful:

    The cover photo can't contain:
    • Price or purchase information, such as "40% off" or "Download it at our website"
    • Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page's About section
    • References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features
    • Calls to action, such as "Get it now" or "Tell your friends"

Thanks for posting this practicks. I am going to change mine this weekend.

I've been looking at what some other people have been doing since the news, and so far I have only been seeing people using family photos, luxurious backgrounds, photos of their products or brands.

I am yet to see anyone cleverly have a link or some sort of way of promoting their website. Donna is a marketer I have watched for some years and have respect for, but uh.....she doesn't seem to be playing by the rules now is she?

      Donna Fox | Facebook

How are you guys intelligently using the photo frame to talk about what you do?

This is what happens when a site gets 800 million accounts. Now what needs to happen is the next social media needs to pop up and make facebook irrelevant, just like friendster and myspace before it.

They have simply controlled what the pages look like.....

There were certainly some dodgey default landing pages and some apps which were ruining the customer experience for Facebook.

I personally think its a move in the right direction!

    Something huge I bet.

I think they are clamping down on Scammy advertising rather than internet marketers...

They have no issue with you having a page...

You just gotta play ball their way.

It's their park so we just gotta abide by their rules.

At least they havent mass slapped people!

Facebook is ow public and needs be able generate income. Clamping down on free advertising like free fan pages is just a step toward generating higher ad revenues.

Facebook is really sneaky. I think they want us to advertise more with them. I just changed one of my fan page and I hated it as it made my landing page Video hidden and cant seem to get it back. OH I hate it.

I guess I will have to hold on (Not Update) for the others as Long as I can.

Forced roll out will be on the 30th March so you can hold out till then...

I don't think it has anything to do with advertising. If that were the case they would have increased the amount of advertising on pages....they've actually decreased that.

They are certainly not killing their own business...

They just made advertising with them more relevant and better now!

Remember that Welcome Tabs are not the be all and end all of a facebook page!

Well, I went ahead and went to the new format because I liked it and the tab I created using some software I got on the forum still works and as a matter of fact, is more prominent now in the new layout.

I think it might actually improve things.

I suppose there are ways to make it work.

Such as having the facebook timeline cover photo (the photo on top of your page) to be the welcome photo. Also don't forget that you can advertise on your own page to make it more relevant. Of course fb is trying to squeeze some money out of users, but they are a business and so are internet marketers in this amazing forum

    Timeline Cover Photo Rules

Before you get too excited about all of the wonderful promotional opportunities that the Timeline cover photo has to offer, be sure to get acquainted with the rules. When you go to upload your new Timeline cover photo, you will be greeted with the general guidelines as follows.

“This space is not meant for promotions, coupons, or advertisements. Your cover photo should not be primarily text-based or infringe on anyone else’s copyright. Learn More about choosing a cover photo.”
On the Learn More page, you will find the main three “don’ts” of what cover images cannot contain.

Price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it at our website”
Contact information, such as web address, email, mailing address or other information intended for your Page’s About section
References to user interface elements, such as Like or Share, or any other Facebook site features
Calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends”
As you can see, the restrictions on the Timeline cover prevent you from turning it into a fan-gate, promotional billboard, or other marketing tool. Additional rules for the Timeline cover include:

Covers must not be false, deceptive or misleading, and must not infringe on third parties’ intellectual property.
You may not encourage or incentivize people to upload your cover image to their personal timelines.

        Heya Phil,
very neat and looks professional. The blue theme you have goes very well with fb's branding too. Personally I don't like IM who overhype and oversell themselves, and you did not do that

Mike Hill, that is very true. I suppose with the new timeline, they can still buy likes. I never believed in buying likes, rather have amazing superfans who are genuinely interested in your products and go for your own upsells, than thousands of fans who unfollow your posts.

You can still direct where people land on your FB site. According to what FB says, you can direct them to a app or a link. I have link explaining more about it here if that helps. We can still direct them like I said and what I am doing is experimenting and preparing photos for my photo bar at the top because there will be changes to that as well and we will want to use it as a marketing too as well. Hope that helps some.

Wow, I knew about Timeline but did not hear about this forced change for fanpages to timeline until today.

Facebook can do what they want, it's their site.

But they have just made the power of free Facebook fan pages far less powerful for businesses. They want Facebook to be "cool and laid back" is what I am thinking, with no "in your face" direct marketing allowed. That and I'm sure they want businesses to spend more money on Facebook ads.

These are huge changes for all those people into Facebook, for sure.

The new face of facebook fan page is made for a huge purpose, we might not like its look since we get to used the simpler one. Even myself, I admitted the first time I saw it, it really makes me wonder how to add some captivated details to get more fans easily. But, I guess Facebook won't allow online marketers to be left behind, for sure they will provide innovative ideas how to make the most of the new look.
