My newsletter- what would you do?

I publish and distribute a monthly newsletter to a list of 5,000 people in a certain industry. I was employed in this industry in the past so I have always had great fun publishing the newsletter and sharing my thoughts with the recipients.

My question is in regard to monetization. Now that I have 5,000+ subscribers to the newsletter I figured I should try to make some money off of it.

Are there companies out there that sell advertising for online newsletters?

If so, who are they?!?

I haven't really been able to locate any.

Thanks for the help...

Rather than sell advertising to someone else, why don't you find different affiliate programs that would fit your niche and put ads on there from yourself for those programs?

To your subscribers, it will look the same and then you will get paid commissions from the sales and can change offers.

Is there something that you have used in this niche that you could write about that would also be helpful to your readers that you could be an affiliate for?

We a list of 5000 people who have been reading my stuff for a while and hold me in high regard, I'd be making some pretty good money, so you should be able to do it too.

      Hey TopKat22,

Thanks for your input and great ideas!

My problem with affiliate programs is that I just don't think there are any that fit- However, I could be wrong.

For arguments sake let's say my subscribers are all insurance agents.

Wouldn't it just be easier to get the help of a third party company to sell advertising in a more traditional way?

What do you think and is this possible?

Sure you could find someone to advertise on the newsletter or even find a company to take a commission to find you an advertiser, just google it.

However, whatever advertisers would be interested in placing an ad on your newsletter could be the same product or service that you could be an affiliate of and place your own ads.

Using your example, Insurance Agents. What do they need?

Qualified leads. You could become an affiliate for a legitimate, high quality lead generation service and then offer it to your newsletter as an ad.

However, they will never know it is you because it would be from that other company.

What else would an insurance agent need? Maybe they need assistance once in a while but can't afford a full time employee.

You could become and affiliate for a legitimate virtual assistant company and advertise that.

Every so often the insurance agent wants to take a vacation. Become an affiliate of a cruise line or tour group or travel agency (not MLM though) and offer that.

I could go on and on.

Hmmm...Those are really good thoughts! Thanks!

The only problem I have is that I can't seem to find any third party companies that sell advertising for newsletters on Google...

Your ideas may be the best way to go!

    Good ideas, TopKat22!!!

((bbguy1)), piggy-backing off of ((TopKat22's)) example of insurance agents ... you could have an app created that you could sell through your newsletter. I'm sure insurance agents can use a smart calculator or some software to generate some numbers faster and easier.

If you don't mind revealing your target market for this newsletter, maybe we can brainstorm on some ideas for monetizing your newsletter that are specific to your market.

      Hi Iris,

      Thanks for the feedback....

I don't know why but I keep thinking that I would just prefer to try and outsource the "monitization" process to a third party that sells adspace after all....

I googled it and found some great information about getting advertisers for your website and some might also work for a newsletter. Here are the links:

4 Easy Ways to Get Advertisers on Your Site | Entrepreneur.com#

How to Find Advertisers for Your Website: The Ultimate Guide

I thought it was interesting that the #1 option on article no 1 above was post affiliate ads. ;-)

As for how to do it, the other way, the things that struck me that I would probably do is try to find advertisers directly by going to sites like ideamarketers.com or Qondio.com and find someone writing in the fields related to your newsletter and then just send them an email making the offer available to them.

However, that would be a set fee a month and I still think that you being an affiliate would pay you more.

Also, in the 2nd article, he goes over what a hassle it is to get advertisers. But who knows, it may not be a hassle for you.

    Good luck.

Oh, here is another thought....based on your niche, go to a forum related to your niche and see who is advertising on there and offer them advertising on your newsletter.

Most people would pay to get their ad in front of 5000 niche targeted people.

You can also check magazines or journals in your niche and seek out advertisers. Craigslist may also be an option ... see who is advertising over there in your niche and offer them ad space in your newsletter.

    Have you considered Adsense, also????

Does adsense allow ads in newsletters? or just websites?

      Hey,

You guys have literally got my brain moving in the right direction...Thanks!

I am having so many thoughts and ideas now- it is crazy.

I'm going to look into adsense as well as check out other sites/forums in my niche to see who is advertising there.

What about Meetups???? Have you considered them or belong to any?

Depending on your market and niche, there may be Meetup groups in your area you can tap into. Attend those meetings, network, even put on a presentation on a good topic; as you build interest and they get to know, like and trust you, you will run out of ad space!!!

One more thought ... Chamber of Commerce! If you are not a member, see if you can come in and speak to their group or do a free workshop?

However, in keeping with the idea of target market, you could hold local workshops on topics specific to your industry that would appeal to those who would want to advertise in your newsletter. If all goes well, the response should be pretty good.

You may also offer your services as a guest blogger (for a fee) to your seminar attendees who are local business owners who have websites targeting your industry and market. You can hold these workshops only when needed to keep your ad revenues up.

    TopKat22,

I don't know if Adsense allows ads in newsletters and I haven't had a free moment to Google it but I do know that I have been seeing text ads appearing at the top of my Gmails!

Wait ... I just went into my Gmail and this is what I found at the top of my email (it is a single line of text that changes every couple of seconds):

Any Size One Price Sale - www.SleepExperts.com - Get a Queen Size Set for Price of Twin Set Starting at $149 ea piece

That looks like an ad to me! If not, Google has some 'splaining to do!

    Iris
P.S.: If you have a Gmail account, check out a few of your emails and see if something similar appears at the top of any of your email messages. If not, maybe I'm special!

      Iris,

I think you are correct but then Google owns gmail.

So I don't know if they allow it elsewhere.

If they do, I sure haven't heard about it.......yet anyway.

I would do thorough, effective market research. Your prior experience in the niche would give you a great advantage over most other people in that you know the process involved, or the steps taken, or the needs of the market in general.

What kind of searches/ month are we talking about here? (size of the niche)

What kind of niche longevity are we talking? Is this a market where a person makes one purchase, or a market that has many needs and makes many purchases. (Spending Power)

If there are not many products to promote to fill the needs of the market, and the niche is large enough possibly create some new products yourself.

Yeah, it would be interesting to see if Google has a problem with someone else using Adsense in their newsletters!?!?!? I may have to do a little poking around and see if I can find an answer to this question when I find the time. But I need to get my butt off the WF and back onto the site I'm building!

    Talk soon,

I would continue to email as usual, but then at the end - lead them to a blog where your adsense links are set up, and any product that you find or create should be mentioned at the end of each post.
