Why Not Just Buy A Website?

Get one that is already setup and just needs to be worked to get it higher in the rankings... Maybe all it needs is to be monetized more, maybe it needs nothing.

So why not just buy a website that's already working?

If we could start a conversation on this that would be great, pros and cons...

Cheers

There are many that do. I find that a lot of the Warriors that I personally know that do this don't really talk about it much, all for very different reasons. I like buying websites that are making some money because I know I can tweak them to make even more money. You can find marketing inefficiencies in a lot of these websites, tweak them, and squeeze them for more mulah or flip them.

Last fall I found a website for sale that was making $800 a month net. Now, the seller wasn't even building a list and the graphics were awful. After a few questions I bought the site and was able to flip it for ten times that amount in a short period of time.

There are a ton of gems like this out there, you just have to know what to look for.

All of the above. Believe it or not, I've found some of my best finds by simply using the search engines. The gems aren't always on the first page, sometimes they are on page 8.

Another neat trick to look for business brokers in your city or county that have a portfolio of websites they are looking to sell. The key here is to know what to look for. Some of these brokers don't know enough about these websites to know their true value.

I use a basic rule of ten. If a website is making 1,000 a month then it should sell for approximately 10k. I'm over-simplifying because there are other factors to consider, such as intellectual property, patents, inventory (if applicable), buyer lists, etc. But it's a good baseline to use.

There's definitely an art and science to this whole thing. You've got to know what questions to ask, what contracts to have signed so you don't get your a$$ handed to you, how to verify earnings, etc.

Great idea and like Rod says many people already are, the question is having the know-how to do it.

I would think the competition is pretty stiff for suitable candidates as well, as there is always someone with deeper pockets.

I've built an entire business by creating websites and selling them once they have high rankings etc. I also buy websites with good age and rank, and then make them convert. I've sold websites for as high as $96,000 USD, and as low as $500. Big niche in the biz buy/sell thing if you know what you're doing.

It is a great idea. I think why most newbies don't is because they either don't know about it or can't afford it.

Some are crap that I've seen and could do better starting from scratch but once in a while you get a really great one that the person just doesn't know how to monetize or has lost interest and wants to move on.

I've found you get them for better prices outside of making money niche.

I agree ... a lot of newbies just don't know that they can buy affordable "done for you" websites. For some, starting out in IM with no money, they try to do everything themselves. However, that can lead to major frustration and information overload. Buying a site from over on Flippa would save tons of time ... and we all know that time is money!

You can also find some expired domains with pretty good names and some age that you can turn around and make good money with if you know what you're doing. There are a lot of folks over on Fiverr who will set the domain up on WordPress and practically do everything else you need for $5 bucks a pop!

Flippa has some great opportunities for a newbie to catch. But it also has some scams. You ve got to be careful out there, if you don't know what you are doing.

But buying a website that it is already monetized seems like a good idea, especially if you are just starting out and do not know yet how to make money. It is a good investement!

    Sonic74,

When you buy these niche sites with EMDs, what do you usually do to them to start making money or increase your revenue? And, what do you usually pay, on average, for each one?

If they're already on-page SEOptimized, I just add a couple of original articles and build backlinks (social bookmarks, submitting articles).

      Actually they don't need a lot of work,just on-page SEO,good articles and a few backlinks !

Buying an already established website will allow you to start making profits straight away. This is good if you are looking for where to invest your money for monthly profits. For Example, if you have $8000 and buy a website that is already earning $500 + per month, you will get your money back within one and a half years. After that, it is profits. Pretty good investment. Right? If you work on that site, it can even earn you more.

However, If you chose not to buy and instead you build your site from the start, Lol, with $8000, you can build a couple of profitable sites with good content and work on them. This route will even earn you more in a shorter period than a person who invested all the $8000 in one website.

So I personally think Buying is good for a slight improvement and then selling. Not just buying to keep.

I have bought a lot of sites in the past that are making money they I just revamp them and then in 6 or so months they are showing a nice profit :-) Most of the time sooner :-)

Sometimes its easier to develop one from the ground up :-)

One of my business models is to buy a aged domain, with pr, and then add a bunch of what I call "perceived value" to the site. This means making it Web 2.0 worthy, packed with social approvals, easy check-out processes, glossy buttons, maybe a WP install and of course a truck-load of backlinks.

You can 2x, 3x or even 5x the traffic to the website within a matter of 60 days or less, and sell it for 2x, 3x or even 5x the price you paid for it.

    Checkout these marketplaces:

    Bizbuysell.com
    Flippa.com
    buysellwebsite.com

Also check Godaddy for expiring domains with PR and Age if you want to build it from the ground up. Utilizing article builder, plus WPRobot and a WPAdsense plugin can monetize it easily until you get around to really work on it.

Alot of people do this. But building up your own business like the website you want to buy is simple and easy to do also. You would probably earn more in a shorter period of time with a small advertising budget tho.

May be a website owner want to sell his website because its not making revenue for him or her or may be its too much difficult to rank for the keywords or rank in that niche. So you must have different information before you buy one.

Buying a website that requires a year or more to make up for itself can also be risky, because you have no idea how the future earning potential is for the site. With maintenance it's unlikely to stop earning alltogether, but we have no idea what the future holds. You can get banned from adsense, google algorithm changes and many more reasons.

Not saying buying websites just for the monthly revenue is bad, but there's a bigger story to it than "well it will make up for itself in XX months"

Well buying a site first of all cost a lot of money. For beginners/Newbies maybe they're just trying to make money online buying a pre-made sites will not be a good idea as they have not earn much money yet and they're spending more than what they're earning. This is not a good idea , unless things start to pick up for them and than they can consider of buying a webpage. That's the cons. The pros are of course it will look very professional and might attract more customers !

Creating a website yourself could take a you a lot of time. especially if you are not a web designer and do not have much html knowledge. It is always easier to find a cheap ready made website about the niche you want and then customize it to your need or hire someone to do the extra customizations for you.

It is really a good idea. But the problem I find in this is that you might be aiming for beginners and beginners usually don't have / don't want to invest too much money to start in the business.
