Are Twitter Contests Effective?

Are twitter contests effective for building opt-in lists?

I can see them being effective for generating some word-of-mouth buzz, and gaining Twitter followers - but I have a feeling it would attract a lot of people that don't really care about my niche, and just want a free prize

Thoughts?

There are easier ways to build your list on Twitter than that.

An old client of mine had me follow the followers of someone in the same niche, then when they followed him back they would get a direct message immediately after they followed, saying "Hey, I did an interview with X guy, I can send it to you if you give me your email"

I finally got curious about the results and asked, he said he was getting 60-70% opt-in rate.

Then he would just go and add them to his list I guess.

So yea, just gotta be creative. No need for a contest

that's actually a pretty good idea... thanks!

but isn't the whole immediate follow-up direct message bad twitter etiquette? ive heard some people think its extremely spammy...

in the meantime i'll have to look for someone interesting to interview

    thanks again!

Its not "instant" unless you want it to be (or at least with what I use, I dunno about other tools)

This particular guy just requested that I sent them instantly after the people followed him.

& since he was the one paying, thats how I set it up. lol and you're welcome, if you cant find someone to interview I'm sure you could find something relevant to offer them as a freebie. Google has lots of them haha

In some ways, twitter contest is effective but just like any game not all organizers find it productive. If you think that it works 50-50 on your end, I bet you need to look for another strategy to attract people on your niche.

I agree with your line of thinking there. Some people might only be participating because of the prize, and not for the topic. Well, it's going to take some time before you can convince a lot of people to participate genuinely. You have to show them that you ARE interesting even without those contests.
