Reason why I use blogger

I prefer blogger, because:
- blogger easily crawled by google
- blogger don't need any plugins like wordpress to be optimized
- blogger have close to zero downtime
- sub domain from "blogspot.com" that have very high PR and authority
- safe from injection / hacks / deface

Reason why you shouldn't use Blogger: Control.

ToS: Spam: Spam takes several forms in Blogger, all of which can result in deletion of your account or blog. Some examples include creating blogs designed to drive traffic to your site or to move it up in search listings, posting comments on other people's blogs just to promote your site or product and scraping existing content from other sources for the primary purpose of generating revenue or other personal gains.

    Penalties:
Put the blog behind a 'mature content' interstitial
Put the blog behind an interstitial where only the blog author can access the content
    Delete the blog
Disable the author's access to his/her Blogger account
Disable the author's access to his/her Google account
    Report the user to authorities

Not sure I would want to lose my Google account for promoting my own product

I think you're assuming he is using it to spam. Some people thrive on the blogger platform. Sometimes all it takes is experimentation to get started. I began Squidoo as a means to get backlinks, but it's turned into traffic generation and $$ for me. Blogger is a top 250 website/platform on the web (according to Alexa); don't be so quick to dismiss it. Yes, there is some risk to losing it, but that goes for most things in life.

They do all mention link building:

"......drive traffic to your site or to move it up in search listings" The only other reason you would link build is to promote your site and that is not allowed.

The only thing Blogger can be used effectively for is a personal blog. Anything else has a significant risk of being banned. This is a marketing forum, hence the assumption to OP related to marketing.

Why would you not need to worry about SEO just because Google owns blogger? Blogger doesn't do the on page SEO for you or off page.

What niche are you targeting? (or does that even matter?)

Are you making money on a daily basis with your blogger blogs?

Had success with Blogger. Almost 1 million page views last year to an abandoned blog about a celebrity (10 posts, last post was in August) that made $1,000 in Adsense.

All you have to do is offer something of value to a particular audience, and Google will find your Blogger blog relevant to that audience.

If the audience wants a blog about red cars with blue tires and pink hoods, then build a blog about it, and Google will reward you because you are offering something of value to that group of people who love red cars with blue tires and pink hoods.

Hope that inspires you. Google can take it down, anytime, no problem. It's their property anyway.

If you build blogs that people will love, and not some 500-word article trash, Google will reward your Blogger blog with traffic. Heck you can just have pictures on your Blogger blog and it becomes Pagerank 2.

Google loves Blogger blogs with a personal touch. It was how blogging started -- as personal journals.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying I prefer Blogger over WP. I myself have 50 or so wordpress sites. Blogger has its uses so does WP.

You don't own "your" site, at Blogger - Blogger owns it.

None of those is a reason to use Blogger. That's just a mixture of inaccurate information and things that are equally true elsewhere.

One of them isn't even true, at all. If you imagine that a blogspot subdomain has "very high PR and authority" you're not living on the same planet as me.

All my sites, hosted in many different places, have just as much up-time and are crawled just as regularly by Google as blogspot's are.

Have you really bought into the story that "because Google owns Blogger, it ranks well and get indexed well?" It's just an urban myth. That's no more true of Blogger than it is of Hostgator.

How many Warriors have to have all their Blogger blogs deleted in the night before people learn that you can get all the "advantages" of Blogger for yourself, on your own hosting, without paying a penny, and that way you can be in control of your own business and not be dependent on someone else's inconsistently interpreted and ever-changing terms of service?

Honestly, this subject is such a no-brainer ...

Blogger sucks! Google secretly hates blogger and struggles to clean out the garbage on a regular basis by mass deleting crappy blogs. Google looks at blogger like it is an article directory full of junk content.

It initially purchased it for the same reasons it purchased YouTube...because of the fact that it was a very popular, high-traffic internet property that Google felt it could monetize effectively...typical Google methodology.

It is just a single attempt out of many that Google has experimented with as a means to harness the power of UGC and "hopefully" monetize it on the back-end...

I bought my own domain but don't have self-hosting yet so does blogger/google still "own" my blog and all the other rules still follow.

I'm kind of confused about that.

Do "blogspot" links/sites get treated more like spam and no follow by certain websites, I heard that somewhere but not sure if 100% true.

Nice to get rid of that ugly subdomain for once.

      Yes - it does.

Redirecting your own name to a site hosted there doesn't change the fact that Blogger owns and controls the site, not you. Having your own domain-name doesn't change their TOS (nor their idiosyncratic and inconsistent interpretations of them, I'm afraid: if someone "reports" your site and some blogspot employee reviewing the reports decides that you might be using it "to generate traffic to another site" ... gone!).

It just makes no sense at all to host a site there, as a marketer, when there are so many alternatives (including even some reliable free ones) available elsewhere. Contrary to what some people imagine, you can get exactly the same "SEO benefits" in dozens of other places - and have some security for your business, too.

You can read about plenty of Warriors' experiences with Blogger in all the many threads like this one.

For every person saying "It's perfectly safe to use Blogger, and the backlinks are good" there's a thread like that, here.

I plan on getting self-hosting in the future. My site is far from finished just bought the domain this week.

Will I have no problem moving everything to another host later?

Building backlinks to my new domain is fine and should continue doing that???

I'm going to do mostly custom html stuff so nav bar and all the blogger crap will be gone.

Lot of other decent blogger seem ok with custom domain and blogger hosting. I guess i'll just concentrate on content and SEO for now....

You could have got self-hosting in less time than it took you to write that post. There are plenty of decent, reliable, well-established, professional, free hosting places (where they don't put any advertising at all on your site). Like Byethost and 000WebHost, to name only two.

That depends on your skills, but there are certainly video tutorials available on how to move a site from Blogger to self-hosted Wordpress.

Yes, a lot "seem ok" and a lot get deleted, too.

Do you like those odds, when they're totally unnecessary?

You're still hosting at Blogger, which is unsafe and unreliable because of their TOS. Sorry, but all I can say in response to that is to repeat what I've said above, and what hundreds of other Warriors have said in hundreds of other threads. "They all thought they were safe until ...", "These are things that happen to 'other people', not to me", and so on. It's your business ...

Just don't imagine that using your own domain-name (though obviously a good thing to do for other reasons) has any relevance at all, in this regard.

That depends on how you arrange your life, Matthew. I don't have that risk of losing my websites. Some risks are totally unnecessary, entirely without benefits just as available in other ways, and equally easily avoided.

      I strongly suspect not.

And it certainly appears not, to judge by many of the threads here (and elsewhere) on the subject.

I may be mistaken, but my reading of the situation is that business-minded people who plan ahead enough to have their sites backed up at all aren't very likely to be using Blogger in the first place: they'll have done just a little bit of research and realised there's no benefit (compared with the alternatives), and plenty of risk. :p

You can lose all your work. I lost 4 blogger blogs in 2009 because they got infected by malware, what happened because of a hacker. Google never helped me. The blogger and google forums are chaotic. If you depend on them, you are simply lost. Even when someone answers your questions, their answers are merely opinions.

You should use blogger blogs only for traffic because they get a lot of traffic from Google. Create one or two of them without posting there too many words, and send your readers from your blogger blogs to your wordpress blog, which will have your own domain name. Post there your best articles. Nobody will steal it from you.

I totally agree with Alexa here,

hosting your own blog or website for that matter is essential, you have to be in control of your business. One of my first early warnings when entering online marketing was to always be in control of my sites, and that means hosting and domains. I'll never use a free host, it's like toying with the devil.

Nothing wrong with having blogger in your traffic funnel. If you are feeding in the third tier of your funnel with it .. it has benefits. You always fully own your first two tiers.

Traffic via Blogger to a two phase squeeze, in tier two, admittedly doesn't bring as much traffic as it did just a couple of months ago but that could be due to the content needing to be refreshed. The traffic is still good and targeted.

Since Blogger is owned by Google no wonder why this Blogging platform is a good tool. In spite of this fact, there are still lots of people especially online marketers who found it no good for business this is also due to the fact that they don't find blogging significant in building their online reputation. Once they learn that they can get everything Blogger gives them, also without paying anything, at a multitude of places like Weebly, Yola, Blinkweb, 000Webhost and Byethost and own and control their own pages, they'd have no reason to use Blogger at all.

These threads all go the same way.

As they grow, more and more people appear, and post, who've lost their sites at Blogger, together with a few people who know no better, who've read only the title and the OP, recommending Blogger for beginners.

(I'm not suggesting that was your purpose in posting, or what you did yourself, Paul, I hasten to add - it's a general comment, not aimed at yourself!).

You own the content, and as long you already have it backed up, you can set it up again on your own hosting. Just not using Blogger software, because it stopped supporting FTP a couple of years ago, and nowadays there's no such thing as "self-hosted Blogger" any more.

Not if it was at Blogger on a Blogspot sub-domain. Rankings attach to pages. If you had your own domain-name redirected there, then you're better placed.

But doing that (re-directing your own name to Blogger hosting) doesn't make any difference at all to Blogger's terms of service or to their interpretations of them, and it doesn't, therefore, reduce the chance of losing your sites in the first place.

Everyone has different opinion and choices. Me, i choose to use Wordpress rather than Blogger. Simply because it is very easy to use.

I have both wordpress blog and blogger blogs. My wordpress is much more convenient, easier to make it look pretty. Blogger doesn't look too great, but seems like it gets free traffic more easily. Maybe google helps it also.

So, if we have a custom domain on Blogger and they decided to shut down our blog, our search engine rankings would stay the same but we would have to find another host to post our content on. Is that right?

Can you tell me if we need to know any html to create sites on Weebly, Yola, Blinkweb, 000Webhost and Byethost. Also, do they take any cut of the adsense clicks and whether it's possible to use a custom domain on any of the platforms?

    Thanks

It's possible to use a "custom domain" (you mean your own domain-name, I think?) with any of them. (But don't register a domain-name through your hosting company: that's certainly not a good idea, whoever the host is).

Weebly, Yola and Blinkweb have their own in-built site-builder, for which HTML knowledge isn't needed.

000WebHost and Byethost are just reliable free hosts, where you can host whatever you want - an HTML site if that's what you want, or a Wordpress blog, or whatever.

All the places mentioned above have both free packages and paid-for packages. Whether they take a cut of AdSense on your pages, when you use the free package, is something you'll need to check with each. I believe that 000WebHost and Byethost don't, but don't take my word for it, in case my information's out of date. (I don't use AdSense on any of my sites).

My Wordpress.com site got closed overnight - no right of appeal. Anyone totally relying on a free blogging platform is asking for trouble.

I love blogger also. Easiest interface of any of the free site or blog models. My sites get indexed very fast. No special plug-ins. And as long as you follow their TOS you're OK. Those that say you don't have control are wrong.

Yeah I've had a couple sites taken down but I've also had sites that I've built with wordpress and my own domain never get into Google. Plus Goolgle can de-index any site they don't like.

I have one site that makes me a consistent $800 a month and costs me zero to maintain.

You're not alone! Even the people recommending Blogger, in this thread, are mostly admitting that they've lost sites there.

Just as it would at 000WebHost or Byethost, you mean, where it would still be free but you could own and control it yourself and not constantly have the risk that it might be taken down like a couple of your other sites were?! Surely you don't seriously imagine that the income it produces depends on where it's hosted?!

Internet marketers, it seems, vary enormously in their willingness and ability to learn from experience!

The best reason is that you can get away with almost any spam, as long as the articles are ok. Never had any problems with it. Unlike blog.com which de indexed 5 of my 1 year old blogs. Wordpress.com is also very picky, they don't care if you have 50 posts. Bare in mind that all my account had profiles and pictures set.

i totally agree with the first post. a lot of my blogger friends are having problems because they get virus alert... and their fans don't want to visit back anymore because of the message alert.

If you are planning to earn from amazon and mainly adsense then Blogger will rock your world. They are simply awesome for Adsense but for CPA/ direct product promotion Blogger can really be harmful.
and Remember that its on the Google's control so you have to be careful all the time

I would use blogger just because it is a lot of easier to get your own domain penalized by google in comparison to a blogger blog.

Yesterday I put a post on my Wordpress site. 5 minutes later it was indexed.

I put the same post on a Blogger blog and it was indexed in 4 minutes 59 seconds.

Speed is everything on the internet - think of how many extra sales I could have made in that one second Wordpress lost me.

I'm totally convinced - going to move all my Wordpress blogs to Blogger right now!

      Martin

P.S. Should I sue Wordpress for loss of income?
