Not really that interesting Johnny. Remember this isn't the first time Google has attempted to muscle in on Facebooks parade. Google Buzz was a disaster. Google has a history of bungling things, such as Google Checkout which was meant to bite into PayPals market share.

The only reason it got so much hype was largely due to shiny object syndrome.

While all the marketers here were talking about it as the next greatest thing since sliced bread and discussing how they were going to exploit the platform, it never occured to many of them that there was no compelling reason for people to switch over from Facebook.

It didn't take long before Google started purging accounts of people.

Perhaps not. I just thought Id share it

Still, I find it interesting how such a massive project, developed by one of the worlds largest companies, can produce such poor results.

Facebooks advantage doesn't extend from the fact it has a significant headstart so much, more so from the fact that it has a well built internal programming platform allowing developers to create games, applications etc. keeping people interested in sticking around and coming back to Facebook.

There was nothing unique or special about G+.

I think a lot of people give Google too much credit. They assume because it is the most popular search engine that it can't do anything wrong and is guaranteed to succeed in whatever new venture it decides to undertake.

I remember someone saying on this forum that G+ was just one of the properties to be added into the "failed" lists of Google properties, I then thought that the user saying that was right and I still think the same thing now.

Fact is G+ is not recognizable as a social media website among the regular users, it is just a + sign to Google website, so nothing "fancy" for them. Unlike facebook that went viral to a community of common people that had nothing to do with technology, students, co-workers and it was meant as a way of connecting people/friends/colleagues even online.

Unlike we like to switch bars where we hang out in real life, online we don't want to be tossed on all different websites (unless we are social network maniacs that got one account on fb, one of myspace, one on hi5 etc etc etc and now we signup happily on G+ too, but those users..can they really be following all networks they are on?).

Google can keep pushing the G+ pages in organic listing, can have wide media reach to publicize it but i am convinced G+ will be closed anywhere between 2-3 ears (yeah just adding numbers..), or if it won't be closed it will remain a "ghost town" as the journalist describes it in the WSJ article where you will find only few spirits that forgot to get on the last train (and I'd dare even to say that those spirits will either be webmasters or anyway tech oriented people).

Still an interesting read, as these facts are now showing up even on major medias (even tho, it doesn't even deserve to be mentioned LoL)
