Most of us can't earn a full time income from IM. What do you do to support yourself?

Would you quit your job if you began earning enough via IM?
How much time does it allow you to spend on your IM work?
#day #job

I never had a day job, I started off doing IM and am still doing it. Now, if you're asking how much time I spend on it well I'd say I do it full time.

      I can't say I never had a day job.

I had jobs in high school and college and one right after college. Then I started my first offline business and then another one and another one and another one, and then got into residential real estate, and then commercial real estate and then investing then consulting and then retired. Those were the successes, I didn't list the not so successful ventures. ;-)

      And now this.

At the moment most of my income comes from working for a relative at a post office -- mostly sorting mail/parcels and other general duties. The place is going to be sold soon so chances are I won't continue my employment with the new owner. It'd certainly be nice to earn a nice income from IM before then

As long as I finish my duties, this job does allow me to spend quite a bit of time on the internet so I can do some IM-related research/reading/whatever.

Yeah i would quit my job if i earned enough with IM... which i've already done. I spend countless hours on my business... mostly implement recurring marketing strategies to get more email subscribers.

I dont have a "real" job. My husband does stone chip repair on vehicles for area car dealers. I do the banking, answer the phone, do the general errands and running around for our small biz. We have our online biz, ChipFixx, and I assemble the kits, ship the kits, answer the phone, get supplies, do some website work and advertising, do the banking etc. for it. It's all part time as needed, sometimes it's busy, sometimes it's not. I'll be swamped with work come the spring!

I spend most of my workday on IM but it's no longer my only source of income.

Because I know first hand how volatile IM can be (and properties were dirt cheap in '08), I used my IM earnings to invest in a few rental properties.

Don't have one, don't want one lol. day jobs are frightening to me. I have had jobs of course but never really a 9-5. I did the army, some time in civil engineering and then my own business. Now I am online and happy, I can go where I want, do what I want (pretty much) and happily work 20 hours a day because that is what I choose to do. Of course, I can happily work 0 hours a day if I choose too, it is called freedom and it beats the heck out of a day job.

Then if you are thinking about the salary, there is one sure thing that if the gun is against your head, you will perform. And if you can't, then go back to a paid job if there are any left

Oh but don't just sit at home working, working, working, get online, network and build relationships then it all becomes great!

    Enjoy and good luck

A 9-5 is not my cup of Tea. Depends on how bad you want to change your life forever. Put in work and focus on IM. A 9-5 will never make you rich. If you want to rid yourself of annoying boss always on your back..IM is the way to do it.

Regardless of who signs your check, you are always self employed. When working in IM you are your own client. What I get from you is that the various clients you have are not bringing enough money. If that is the case...
    1. Market more.
    2. Change your offers.
    3. Repackage your services.

No day job right now, but on the process of applying for one. I used to work in a government agency, one that is in-charge of educating and licensing drivers (and vehicles). I started with IM right after quitting my job (had to relocate with the family) but no such luck until now. I'm glad I found this site, though, it has a lot of information for a newbie like me.

I still prefer of now quitting my job. Because IM isn't really permanent for earnings. Besides with IM, you can maintain it by hiring someone. It's not expensive to hire someone who can maintain your IM business.

What do you do to support yourself?

I work as a software packager for an IT company.

Would you quit your job if you began earning enough via IM?

Yes, I plan to. I really want to quit sooner rather than later. I have quite a bit of money saved away so I could easily support myself and my family for 6 months or so but I'm scared that it's not enough time to replace my day job income with IM.

How much time does it allow you to spend on your IM work?

Usually only about 6-8 hours a week. I've still been able to build up a nice passive income with only this much time but that passive income is only 1/8th of what I earn in my dayjob.

I'm a full time employee. When the IM portion of my career makes a decent amount, I would probably still work for someone else, but I will dramatically reduce the amount of hours. It would mainly be for getting out of the house. I might even change my career and give something new a go.

My day job is a local truck driver in Phoenix Arizona. Yes I will quit that is the whole reason I started learning internet marketing. My ex wife is from the Philippines I met her in America not there. After we got married I went to the Philippines with her, and fell in love with the country.

I decided after the divorce to move permanent to that country. But in the Philippines it's nearly impossible to get a work visa. So I have 2 options a business or I.M. So here I am learning with the hopes of making $1000 USD a month that is all I need to live there.

I have nothing in the USA to keep me here. Work my *** off with hopes of saving enough to retire at 70 not for me. If I started to earn $600 a month tomorrow I would move right away. That would give me the confidence to earn more.

I'm a financial analyst. My online income passed up my dayjob income about 5 years ago and grows every year. But I like the mix of having a full-time job and online income. It provides me with the base pay, plus the benefits. And then I have variable income from my online income.

But I like my job a lot, I get paid well, and I'm close to work. For me it works. If I hated my job, it would be another story.

I did Internet marketing part time for 4 years around my full time job as an outside sales rep. I started IM with a goal of quitting my job and making money online without talking to people. I hit that goal in 2006 and have been full time ever since.

I will say it being your own own boss full time as an Internet marketer is worth the effort when you are doing it part time and it may seem like you are not getting where you want to be.

    I work in social services...

I'd rather be eating lobster on a beach and working location independently.

    That is the truth.

I work full-time as a web developer, been doing this for the past 5 years. But I am working my ass off to get my business online up and going.
My dream is one day stop being "yes boss... no boss" person and make this Internet Marketing business my main income stream, and starting to work for myself.

I would say, 9 hours a day from my full-time job, and 4 hours after it on IM online.
Lots of work indeed, but keeps me motivated.

I have the hardest and most fun job of all. I am a full time mother to kids that are 5 and 2. That means I cook, clean, maintain finances, entertain, referee and event plan. On top of that I freelance write and promote a small network marketing business (but only because I love the products!)

I have a busier schedule now than when I worked full time out of the home!

Bless you! I broke a sweat just reading that!!

I remember my single mom days, working one FT plus one PT job, living alone w/2 kids and then adding school into the mix. I look back now (my kids are 30 and 36 now) and for the life of me, I don't know how I did it!!

Permanent medical disability, both myself and my husband. I'm the PC/IM person behind both of our online businesses while he's "Mr. Mom" for all intents and purposes.

Our business income pays the bills while most of our SSD goes right to the mortgage. So we're always looking for more ways to add some income streams into the household to stay afloat.

I USED TO work for hewlett-packard via HPSHOPPING but I recently quit to work fulltime from home so I can spend more time with the kids and have more relax time. I also find working at home stimulating as you learn different things via the internet almost everyday. And everything is so dynamic, you have to be on your toes always. I am enjoying the challenge.

I work from someone on another continent.

You can consider it as something like work at home. I'm not complaining though. I like this setup better than when I was working outside years ago.

I work as a business architect for a long-term healthcare goverment organisation. Which lets me have a tiny impact on long-term healthcare in my country. It's more than just money.
In addition to that, I do offline IM consulting and online IM.
And like some of the other posters: at night I do whatever's on my wife's to do list...

I have run my SEO company for 12 years now. I started in the living room back when I was a student. I left the US to go to Thailand to experience a new world and also to expand my business. I have worked hard on it and now I have office and employees etc. It did not come easy but with hard work, determination and strong will it has worked out very well so far. I still work with SEO partners in the US and I believe the strength lies in that we can provide high quality SEO but at cheaper prices since the living expenses are cheaper here...
