Hostgator Reseller account question.

I'm thinking of getting a Hostgator reseller account to give to clients that buy websites from me.

But, it is not clear to me if every buyer gets unlimited domains. Hostgator says that the reseller account has unlimited domains. But is it possible for the buyers(my clients) to add/buy more domains in the future them selfs?

    Hi SergeLight

No - it is not true in reality that you get unlimited sites - as soon as you hit a certain usage, they are going to ask you to upgrade or get another account

I know plenty of IMers have HostGator but I've heard bad things about them (I know we've all had our ups and downs with hosting) but I have heard better things about HostMonster as a startup package

Often you can host about 15-20 sites comfortably as long as none get too big so that's probably a good estimate

Of course there will be marketers with a lot more on a reseller account but usually the sites are smaller

It all depends on what your hosting and how many visitors you get and how much they do when they're on the site

    Good luck to you

You probably can have and sell unlimited domains hosting. The actual problem is that the bandwidth, which is also advertised as unlimited, in reality is quite limited. So, yes, you can give a lot of domain names to you clients but you can not give unlimited traffic.

The way I understand HG Reseller plans is that you as "web host" control what packages offered to your users.

Depending on your reseller package, HG gives you unlimited domains, a fixed amount of webspace and bandwidth. As Web host you allot this space/bandwidth as you see fit.

So if you wanted, you could make packages where your customers could only register 1 domain.

I've been through my share of hosting companies...from expensive to cheap...and have for the most part settled on hostgator for my websites. I have a reseller account and its great.

Each client gets their own cpanel. As the reseller, you create your own hosting package and specify the boundaries of that package...how much space they get etc. Your clients then have to operate within those confines.

So perhaps it really isn't unlimited...its a case of space and bandwidth. That said,I'm at around 40 hosted sites on my account and no end in site yet. You'll find most clients have not much more than "brochure" style sites with very low bandwidth usage.

    Nothing is really "unlimited".

I'm not saying hostgator is doing this, as they are a reputable hosting company.

Many resellers offer unlimited this that and the other, jam pack as many clients as they can onto their account, in the hope that none of their clients will use all of the resources of that package.

It starts to unravel very quickly when even a single client takes advantage of all of the resources and impacts all the other clients on the account.

Sure nothing wrong with reselling and offering hosting to your clients, but don't be greedy. I've seen lots of resellers go out of business because clients have discovered they're overselling.

The biggest downside of HG reseller account is the fact your not allowed to "oversell".

    Example (made up values):

You get a HG reseller account with 500MB diskspace and 10GB traffic.
You create 5 accounts, each have 100MB diskspace and 2GB traffic.

Your websites (all of them) use no more than 50MB diskspace and less than 1GB traffic (combined).

You then get a 5th domain and want to create a new account for it, but you cant - since you already used the resources. You now have two options; 1) Get a new reseller account or 2) Lower the limit on one or more of your other accounts.

I find this extremely annoying with HG, specially when there are alternatives allowing you to "oversell".

Maybe HG changed this, don't know - have not used them for more than a year (for the reason stated above).

It is interesting that you find that to be a downside. I am sure any customers you have on your reseller account would find that to be a very good thing.

This is not a good thing. It's only good for HG, and many people don't realize it. If you have a 50GB account, and have a package set for 10GB, create 5 account with that package, you've now hit your limit regardless how much space is actually being used. If your accounts are only using a few GB of "actual" disk space, then now you have XX GB of disk space being wasted. You'll be forced to upgrade.

        Shared hosting: HG

Reseller, Dedi & vps - go elsewhere.

Eleven2 has a good reseller plan, as does Innohosting.

Also, when you have the storage/bandwidth to back up your overselling, you can do so. Not saying that I oversell drastically on my plans, but you will be able to use every bit of what I provide.

I have worked in / around the hosting industry for many years.

You can't have storage/bandwidth to "backup your overselling". That is impossible. If everyone used the amount of resources you sold them, you can't deliver what you sold them.

I realize that people don't use what they buy, but for you to advocate selling more than you can deliver is not right.

Just because "you've been in / around the hosting industry for years" doesn't mean you know anything about what resources we have, nor our capacity to scale. We may be a smaller company, but we're not a fly by night hosting company that will shut it's doors when our customers start using resources because we can't afford them.

the bandwidth is there, the storage is there and the resources are there. There's a specific reason our plans have set limits for space/traffic. Take a look over in the WSO section at the other hosts offering unlimited everything, customers complaining about downtime for days at a time. Each of our servers has limits based on accounts and how much they a allocated.

We do not overload our servers, and yes this means less profit for us, but our customers are happy since they get the resources they're supposed to.

If this sounds like an attacking manner, it's not meant to be.

I agree with your point about having the ability to scale quickly.

I also agree that there is potentially a fairly responsible way to oversell, but lets also be clear that is not the norm.

I certainly didn't mean to attack, but "overselling" is pretty much defined as selling more than you can or will deliver. In my book, that is not a good thing.

No problem. Let's not hijack this thread.

I should have worded my response a little differently though. I completely understand where you're coming from. We don't offer anything we can't provide.

    So any recommendations for me?

I'm aiming to host about 100 websites of which 95% will be small business-type wordpress sites. Most of the client's will not be to tech savvy and build many more sites. If there is a possibility to limit their spec's, that would be great. I think that 1 GB of disk space and 100 GB of bandwidth is enough for a client. (If they ever want more then they can get their own hosting, eventhough I hope to keep them as a client).

But can the clients get new domains, for example with godaddy, and transfer them to their hostgater server without me having to interfere?

Yes, clients can change their DNS of any domain they buy anywhere so that it points to HG.

hosting 100 sites is possible on a reseller account, although even at those numbers you would probably be looking for a small dedicated server.

Of course that all depends on how much traffic and how resource intensive the sites you host are.

Honestly, 1g of diskspace and 100 g of bandwidth is way more than the average site needs.

everyone in the hosting business uses crazy big numbers, because they know people like to see them. But they also "oversell" because they know that nobody actually uses that much.
