Entering Competitive Niches Using Lateral Thinking

I just wanted to post some advice here based on something I have been playing aorund with for the last year or so. While it makes sense wherever possible to go for the "low hanging fruit" and to hit niches/keywords that are reasonably easy to rank for, sometimes you want to enter a profitable-looking market but there is no obvious way in...

Markets like web hosting, finance (loans etc.) or airline tickets could all be examples of these markets that have huge amounts of money flowing through them, but because of their nature, they are *swimming* in competition.

This can make it very hard to get a foothold using "standard" marketing practices - SEO, SEM, article marketing etc.

But I've been experimenting with *other* ways to get into these markets. The one I'm having success with is creating free applications which I then distribute online. The applications are designed so they automatically update with my affiliate links when the users opens them up and so I can gain a foothold in a highly competitive niche without needing to even have a website unless I want to.

For example, you could design an application that does price-comparisons for web hosts and slowly leads the potential customer through the decision-making process until they end up clicking an affiliate link and buying something. Even better, of course, any sneaky affiliate managers won't even know where you're managing to conjure all these sales from ;-)

As a side note, I'm no programmer - I outsource most of this - but have still made a profit from the commissions I have earned as a result of these apps.

It's just a matter of thinking outside the box and looking for a way into a market that other people aren't doing...

All the best,
Richard

    Great stuff!!

I guess a simple niche related toolbar will only serve to help me get backlinks from the software sites but not a lot of traffic.

I'm wondering if you know of any free or paid software that will upload software programs or the pad files to the software directories?

    Thanks!!

    Hi TL,

I've actually been outsourcing the creation and submission of the PAD files because I tried it myself with some automated software last year and it blew my mind!!! :-)

As for the limited traffic - remember if you target the right keywords you don't necessarily need many visitors to make sales.

    All the best,

    Hi Richard,
could you share what kind of applications are these?
    Online/offline? What are PAD files?

    Hi Gleb,

These are mainly stand-alone applications that *can* be used off line but are designed up "update" themselves when the users are online. In that way, if an affiliate program is not longer working, or isn't converting, I can change a few details in a text file on my server and then the data in the application changes.

The PAD file is a file that contains all the information about the application - it's name, file size, system requirement and so on. Most of the software directory sites expect you to submit a PAD file to them so they can then list your application. You can create these using software or, as I do, outsource it due to the amount of information that is required to create the file.

    All the best,
    Richard

    Thanks Richard.
So these apps are relying on activity of people who actually downloaded them and using them on their desktops.

I done something similar with WEB software - my free version of commercial product is carrying backlinks. So it gives me traffic + SEO benefits. And I love the "remote control" concept.

I have a plans to elevate this concept - I agree with you on this approach in general - it works wonders.
