How on earth do people make money with affiliate marketing?
IF you think a bit, it is wired, you take a product from someone, that someone pays you a commission of, let's say 20%, of the sales. That is if you MANAGE to sell his products and after you invest a lot of money in the marketing of that product make also some profit? Sorry but it's a bit confusing.

What's weird about it? It's no different than the supermarket selling all those different brands. They don't make the products (most of them, anyway). They simply buy at one price and sell at a higher price, keeping the difference. Not much difference to selling an affiliate product and keeping part of the price.

Not sure what's so confusing about it. You pick a product you want to promote, you create a blog or squeeze page to send traffic to and then you start generating traffic. You don't have to spend a lot of money marketing. You have to be creative and use inexpensive yet very effective avenues. You can do article marketing, video marketing, social media marketing etc. All of which are basically free other then the time it will take to do everything.

I do wonder about say Amazon affiliates because of the low payout but I suppose it is a numbers game where they have a lot of sites or target higher priced products.
I do alright promoting Clickbank or other peoples products where the payout is at least 50%.
Also promoting continuity programs will build a growing residual income that only requires the same amount of work each month.

The great thing about Amazon and other physical product networks is that it allows you to get involved in really specialised niches, and in some of these you'll find some really high ticket products that there is a demand for but not a massive amount of tough competition. I have a site, for instance, which promotes an item which costs over a grand each - and this is a consumable item that businesses involved in a certain industry need to buy regularly.

So I wouldn't discount physical products, they just require a bit of out of the box thinking when it comes to niches.

As well, Amazon is such a well recognized brand with such a large number of customers that a large proportion of them WILL buy something else from them if they don't buy the specific product you're promoting within 24 hours, whereas that's not very likely to happen with Clickbank. For example, I was selling WordPress website building guides and somehow managed to sell a car part that costed $3000 and made a quick $200 commission that way.
Remember that their cookies stay on for 24 hours, and almost every internet user who shops online uses and trusts Amazon.

Where did you get the 20% from? Click bank it's usually 50% or more - with physical products it's far less, 5% - 8.5% with Amazon.

It's not difficult, as long as you're paying less for your activities that bring the traffic, than the commission you're earning, then you make a profit. If you build a list over time in a particular niche, you can then mail that list regularly without there being any cost involved, so many of the best earning affiliates are those who've focused not just on generating traffic to a specific affiliate link, but those who've built lists & handled them in a way that have kept them responsive.

A responsive list is a gold mine!

Still, even without a list you can make money in affiliate marketing - but if you build a list too, your income potential will increase as you grow your list & keep it responsive by being careful what you mail to the list.

    Thanks

You're right. It is quite difficult. Free or extremely cheap traffic is key. I suggest creating your own product so you keep 100 percent of profit.

The problem with creating your own product is "Demand"

Promoting affiliate products allows you to focus on products for which there is already a demand, and this is where the easiest money is - if you don't have a list, then it is tough to promote a product that people are not already searching for info on.

Creating your own product brings with it a different set of problems & costs - and the biggest problem, if you don't already have a responsive list - is creating a demand for your product. There are thousand of products out there that have had little or no sales, simply because the person who created it wasn't able to give it the kick it needed to get it to the point where there was a demand for it.

The OP discussed how crazy it seems to put money into promoting someone elses product with no guarantee of return - what's the difference in promoting your own product with no guarantee of return, other than this way you've also had to put time, effort & money into creating the product, building the website etc. ?

Personally I think affiliate marketing is great, because you can pick a product which has a demand already, and make some money from promoting it - and if you build a niche specific list as you're going along, then you'll do better & better as the list grows.

You are like a middle man selling a product for someone else and getting a commission for it. It is as simple as that. Now, you just need to drive targeted traffic to that offer and when someone buys, you earn a commission.

Most cases you do need a list and most cases you don't/

On top of what others have said, affiliate marketing is a good way to decide whether or not it's worth creating your own product. You can test the water at relatively low cost, gain a better understanding of the market and hopefully make some money along the way. Plus there's an order of magnitude more products available than you'd ever be able to create in this lifetime!

There are tons of great products sitting in people's garages. Many of them will rot, and become useless. That is the way it is with sales. Create a product....and get it out to the paying public. Failure to do so means...you lose!

An affiliate position can be a waste of time, or a high paying gig; depending on the payout, how much traffic you can generate, and the conversion rate. It becomes a numbers game.

I definitely agree with this! If you create a product but don't put it out, you might as well not have even created it! The key with product creation, or affiliate marketing altogether, is trying to create (or promote) a product that will be helpful to your targeted visitors, whether geared to skin remedies, how to repair your marriage, etc. Of course, you can look on sites like Yahoo Answers to get an idea on how many people may be inquiring on wanted resolutions to their problems, and then check Clickbank to see how many of those products may be out there as an idea... if it's low, then you may have yourself a jackpot if the demand is high.

Create your site, hit up a few forums in your niche, post on some blogs related to your niche, and continue to promote where you can, whether on Twitter, Facebook groups, etc. Better to create your own product and make sales of it, and get people to be YOUR affiliates if you can go that route with it! And then promote other affiliates within your site or product and try to make some money that way as well.

I started out way back in the day AM'ing, and i did it soley THEN to build a list of targted buyers so that when the time came to release a new product of my own, i then had a ready and willing market to listen to my message and see if the product was something they wanted.

It doesn't take much and it really doesn't have to cost you much upfront.

When I first started out all I had was 1 blog, my only out goings were a domain and webhosting and I still made money.

Just decide whether you want to go down the amazon or click bank route, pick your niche, pick products you want to promote, create a blog and set up a mailing list and you're well on your way.

Products with recurring commissions are the way to go though

No - let's say 75% instead. There are plenty of those available to promote, and it's much more worthwhile.

I must have missed school that day ... I've never invested a lot of money in promoting any of them. All you need is a domain-name or two, some hosting and an autoresponder subscription (say about $30 per month in total? - Maybe even less) and you can promote as many as you want. The very first sale you make on the first day of the month can cover all your month's costs.

Well, if you manage to sell his product then it works, if you don't manage then it doesn't

It's no different than selling any other products in any other business model.

One of the most effective methods to do it, as some others pointed is by List Building.

You don't have to invest a lot of money in the marketing, and if you do invest money
you need to make sure that the amount you receive is greater than the amount you
    invest. Simple as that.

I thought like this for sometime but now what I do is I give stuff away for free on the front end to build a list. I give more relevant, useful content to my subs to build a strong relationship.

Only after this is done would I even think about affiliate marketing. I use to just build sites and try and sell to prospects cold but I find it FAR more beneficial now that I get them on my list first, build the relationship and then the selling becomes almost autonomous later on

I guess you have gotten enough answers reflecting that you can make money from affiliate marketing.

Generally the key remains: Build a list, offer them valuable resources. In time they will trust you and will be more likely to purchase from your link

Here is one recipe for making money with affiliate marketing, bear in mind it's just one recipe (there are hundreds):

    1. Find a niche
    2. Know your Unique Selling Proposition
    3. Develop your product mix (don't just promote one product)
    4. Set up your list
    5. Promote, promote, promote (Seo, paid advertising, free publicity, content marketing, strategic alliances, etc.).
    6. Build your list.
    7. Track, test, and tweak to increase conversions.
    8. Give value to your visitors and your readership
    9. Scale up (reinvest profits for more traffic and product offerings).
    10. Focus on what's working and repeat in the same market or a different one.

If you sell a low-ticket item then you're going to need volume. If you sell a higher-ticket item you need your traffic to be more targeted, but you'll need less volume.

It's a good plan but why is "give value" at the very end at #8? Most people don't even get to step #8 and it's usually the main reason why they fail.

See, I think this is what makes affiliate marketing harder than it should be. Creating value should come first, second in worst case preceded by finding a niche. Then you sell, then you promote. Not the other way round. That way not only you get better results but feel more rewarded by creating something of value as well.

If we're in a business of marketing then we're doing it wrong. Where did you see a serious marketing agency spitting out crap sites and articles or spamming people with their affiliate links? That's not marketing that's spam.

If we're in a business of creating websites then we're doing it wrong too. A site that consists of 99% ads is not a good website. It's also spam.

The importance of that step #8 is crucial, it turns out. It's the only thing that separates a spammer from an online businessman/entrepreneur/marketer or what you want to call it.

So now getting back to OP, this is how people make money with affiliate marketing. By doing step #8 first and giving value. It's a fundamental law of economics, really, and it's a tough life going against fundamental laws of economics.

If you don't know how to create your own product, then the next best thing is to sell someone else's and get a commission/per centage on it - hence, affiliate marketing.

It's pretty straight forward. Once you get the gist of how it works and what you need to do, then you can replicate it with a number of other products.

Remember also the other side of the coin: Who on earth makes money with products?

First you have to invest huge amount of your time to search a good market, create product, graphics, etc then you might end up with a product that doesn't sell. Where as in affiliate marketing you can quickly change a product if the first one doesn't sell..

Both options can make you money, or not make you money...

You might not be able to earn a lot of money from the start with affiliate marketing, but it's definitely one of the few ways you can make money with a minimal investment or even for free. You can find relevant affiliate programs that are free to join, use blogging and social media to promote them and research the best ways of integrating your affiliate links in order to make the most sales. If you take the time to study all that, you won't need to invest too much money on marketing.
