Protecting Your Digital Products

What products or services do you use, if any, to protect your digital products from thieves?

There are a number of products out there, including DLGuard, Product Padlock e-junkie, easy clickguard and others.

Can anyone comment on what they're using and give some recommendations?

Thanks,
Liz

    Hi

I'm afraid that's rather hard to do. People who really bought your product could easily share it with anyone. Even if you used DLGuard, etc, it wouldn't stop the piracy. It would probably reduce the piracy, yes, but not stop it.

I like DLGuard but it doesn't cut off access to your guide if someone requests a refund.

I use DLGuard for payment/delivery of my products. It protects to some degree, but nothing protects completely. Once a person has bought your product, there is nothing to prevent them from sharing it on the black hat sites. DMCAs to many services work pretty well, but it is time consuming to issue them if your product is shared on numerous sites.

I use nothing to protect my ebook, for several reasons:

    1. My audience is not technically-savvy. It is unlikely that any of my customers know what a .torrent file is, or how to use one.

    2. It is also unlikely that any of them actually owns their own website, or knows how to create a website, that could compete with my website for sales.

    3. Adding protective layers to your products will simply annoy your real, honest customers who are not trying to rip you off. Making them remember passwords or other methods of protection just means one more hassle for them.

    4. People will be able to break any digital protection anyways. There is nothing you can do to prevent this, if the person doing it is savvy enough.

You might want to consider e-junkie.

Apparently they "stamp" your PDF with the buyers details (name, transaction date etc) upon purchase in an effort to prevent distribution.

Alexa Smith is the best person to ask here, as Im not overly familiar with this product.

I haven't used any of the products mentioned. however i password protects my product directories and mails login details to customers via email... that's the safest way i've discovered.

Just curious, as anyone used Product Padlock? It does protect your product when a customer requests a refund.

    • No matter what you do to protect your product here will always be someone out there who will figure a way around the protection. Its just the nature of the beast.

Reminds of when I was a kid and we had a freezer outside of our cabin that we used to secure with a padlock. Even though there was a padlock on it, it would have been a trivial matter to bust the lock off. My dad used to say "The lock is on there to keep the honest thieves out.".

Kind of the same principle with digital products. Heck for that matter I have even had some of my home study DVDs show up on torrent sites.

      Just my thoughts,
      Ben

I am 100% sure that it is impossible to protect your product from someone else copying it. They can copy your sales page, your graphics, the product itself after the purchase is made....

You can buy any product in any niche from someone that you really like and know that they are doing very well, and pretty much copy everything from them.

It is not like you are doing business offline and have a patent on a product.

It is pretty easy to copy and paste. It is wrong but people do this all the time. I haven't and I am never planning to do because this is not how I do business online.

I used to be worried about protecting my work and I even used some software that would deactivate ebooks if a customer requested a refund.

I eventually realized it was total overkill and if anything it ended up annoying most of my customers. My advice... don't worry about it. Just get your stuff out there.

The post above by Curtis gives some good reasons to forget about protecting ebooks.
