Global Internet marketing from China

Many websites are blocked in China like Facebook, twitter, Youtube, blogspot, wordpress, etc. Some websites are very unstable, sometimes they are accessible in China and sometimes not, for example, Google+. I am unable to access Google+ at this moment. Are there any buddies in Mainland China, how do you market your business on the Internet?

If you can understand Chinese, you would want to search deeper as there are Chinese version of:

    - Video Directories
    - Question & Answer websites
    - PDF Document Directories
    - Social Media
    - Paid Advertising

Since you can understand Chinese, you can consider converting your products into Chinese and sell it to the China market.

    All the best

If I have understood you correctly, you are currently residing at China?

If so, you can try using proxies. I recommend "Hide My Ass." Try to Google that.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,

You live in China but you don't see those 1000's of adverts for VPN that are on just about every AdSense powered site you browse in China? This is suspicious!

If you are selling ebooks in China, how do you stop the people in China from sharing your ebooks (content) online for free?

In general, people in China don't usually want to buy original/genuine version of DVD, movies, song, etc.

First, sorry, if I sound offended by this statement.

How to you stop people ANYWHERE from sharing ebooks, WSO's and all kinds of content for free? This is not just a China problem! Why do you think sites like Megaupload, Filesonic and such existed in the first place? It would be really naive to ever assume that they were created just for storing stuff!!!

It would seem that people EVERYWHERE don't "usually WANT" to buy/pay for original/genuine versions of stuff. Don't take that as a fact or even a generality but in the same breath, don't just assume that us Chinese people (yes, I am chinese!) just want "free" stuff! Contrary to popular western thinking, majority of chinese do know between right and wrong. And might I add, that MAJORITY in china is HUGE!

But on a more constructive note, actually one of the most popular e-commerce sites in China is DangDang.com which is sort of the equivalent of Amazon and of course, their main business is selling....BOOKS! Including...eBOOKS! So will chinese people actually "PAY" for content? Of course they will....if it's of genuine usefulness. Hmmm..does this sound familiar? That people will PAY for content of GENUINE usefulness?

      Hey! Just like ta-da....people anywhere!

So the short answer is yes, internet marketing is alive and doing very well here. I should know....

        Hey Mr. Charly,

As a mater of fact, the LACK of intellectual property protection in CHINA is GHASTLY!

If someone in the U.S, UK, AU etc. steal my copyrighted content, I can easily get a lawyer to deal with the matter in a courtroom.

In China, however, it is VERY difficult to take a legal action against someone who has power (e.g. high ranked officers) in the China Communist Party.

In the U.S, people can even sue the Obama President if he is found guilty of copyright infringement. Now, I don't think that YOU in China could sue the Chinese Premier Mr. Wen Jiabao for the similar issue, right?

        Just my 2 cents, dude!

        Cheers.

    Charly,
You are taking it too seriously ! I am a chinese myself and although it sucks but I have to admit it is tough selling online or physical products in China.

While it may be true that China has tons of potential untapped, but here and there a few guys pop up and sorta steal and sell your things in an extremely cheap price! That really hurts a lot !

But, China is an excellent place to tap into if you are doing the buying and trading to other countries. Their pirated products are as good as the originals!

    No offense bro/Charly .

Hope I helped, good luck to all of you out there !

Good points. But I think you are all missing my point.

Intellectual property is being stolen EVERYWHERE. Not just China. True, you can sue the President in the US but isn't that analogy taken too far? A better point is that in the US, you can hire a lawyer to send a C&D letter to someone who you may believe has stolen your property and are using it without permission from you but tell me who has ever done that for a $11 WSO? Sure, maybe those BIG DOLLAR guru's who have deep pockets have for their info-products a few times but anyone here hired a lawyer to sue someone for violating intellectual property rights?

My point is that it happens EVERYWHERE. But does that stop people from selling WSO's or infoproducts? Nope. It doesn't. Our industry just keeps chugging along and churning out millions of dollars every year.

It will happen here in China and I am sure it already has. Same as anywhere in the world. Does that mean that selling info-products in China is not doable? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Rights or no rights.

Legal system, when it comes to the level we are playing at, has almost no bearing whatsoever no matter where in the world you are regardless of whether you can sue or not. Because the majority of us never will go that far to enforce our $11 ebook.

Oh, BTW. Even if you cannot sue the Premier in China, yes. You sure as hell CAN hire a lawyer and sue someone for violating/stealing intellectual property! It is not as GHASTLY as you think. Again, that is good 'ol US-centric, one dimensional thinking that the American-way is the best way. I sure as hell hope that China never becomes a sue-happy nation like the US.

Geez, I hope that doesn't sound too much like US-bashing. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE America and the American way of life. I hope to return there and live out my golden years there AFTER I make my fortune here! But after living outside the US now for awhile, my eyes are wide-open! I can now see clearly what the rest of the world thinks! And the rest of the world is ALOT bigger than the US!

Oh, and I see FIRST HAND how brazenly and openly copyright infringement is here in China! So don't think that I am saying it is not a HUGE problem. It is. In fact, there are whole sections of cities that have dedicated markets to selling counterfeit goods RIGHT OUT IN THE OPEN! Anything and everything is copied. I have even witnessed FIRST HAND those so-called "vendors" talking to US buyers on the internet negotiating sales of fake stuff that some BELIEVE are the real deal! I have toured factories where the fake stuff are being made. Those fake Gucci's you see on eBay? I can by them here MUCH cheaper! Fake LV's? Yep. Fake Tissots? Yep. And they are so high quality that it takes a trained eye to tell they're fake! So no, I am not oblivious to that side of China.

But the point I am trying to get across to those who will listen is that the majority of chinese are NOT LIKE THAT. The counterfeiters are a SMALL but prominent minority and A LOT of people here hate them because fake goods plague the domestic market here as well.

I once sold some Logitech Rapoo wireless mouses (mice?) sourcing from a vendor who told me he was selling me the real thing. Of course, I caught him selling me knock-offs and ended that relationship quickly. My customers would've PANNED me if I had let that slip by! Reported him to the proper authorities and he got shut down. It may not seem like it, but the gov't here DOES care about China's reputation but there are many reasons why it is that there is not widespread crackdowns on counterfeiting. One being that the counterfeit industry employ a heck of a lot of people and if it got shut down overnight, a heck of a lot of people would be out of work. And in China, that is a MUCH BIGGER PROBLEM because of the sheer number of people that would be jobless. Not saying it's right or wrong for them to not shut down counterfeiting (absolutely could if they wanted to!) but you must take into consideration other factors such as unemployment. It must be done slowly and systematically.

Sorry, I am not trying to start a discussion on geopolitical economics.

chinacharly (or anyone else with relevant experience/knowledge), I'm curious; do you have any experience or know of people who market info products (ebooks, video series, membership sites, etc.) to the Chinese market? I'm currently working on some educational info products geared towards a Chinese audience but I'm a little bit worried that few people will buy the legit versions from me if they are soon available for free on other websites. What's your take?

        Hi,

If anyone wants to sell something online, why not try Language Tutorial Products - online version.

Chinese are serious about learning 2 main languages:
        -> English
        -> French

        Why French?

They are eyeing Canada & France as the 2 most lovable places to further their education, after Australia. They have a lot of presence in Francophone Africa.

Hell... many Chinese are learning Arabic too. I've seen a boom in Chinese presence in Middle-East. We are also seeing their stronger presence in South American nations. So, Spanish is also a potential language to sell.

In China, there are millions of expats ( and thousands are streaming in each month ) from UK, US, Germany, France, Japanese and dozen others. They need help in learning Mandarin ( putonghua / hanyu ) via their native languages, ONLINE.

Language programs are mushrooming in China and many people are making money on that. I've seen English classrooms packed with Chinese students. Not exaggerating.

If you can't produce your own products ( which you should ), you can opt for affiliate programs.

Last note. China is overtaking USA in terms of economy by 1 more year or so. Being cocky towards China based on their political philosophy, will get you left behind real far and real fast in business.

        Don't miss the chuan ( boat ).
