eBay Not Allowing Negative Feedback?

I sold an item on eBay for $375, however I never received the payment and the customer did not even email me, after a week I decided to email the customer. Customer informed me they changed their mind.

So my item was not listed for over 10 days based on the fact someone wanted to buy it and then not pay.

Okay fine, so I wanted to leave negative feedback for this customer for unnecessarily delisting my item and causing me to go through this whole process with eBay for getting my listing fees back and then relisting the item.

It was to my surprise that eBay is no longer allowing negative feedback? At least for sellers... eBay is only giving me the option to list positive feedback or to leave feedback later, no option for negative feedback.

I called eBay and they have informed me that this is correct, negative feedback has been removed.

So what's the point of feedback if you can only leave negative feedback?

It's been like that for awhile; here's an old eBay thread on this: http://answercenter.ebay.com/questio...Non/1000201592 (no affil).

Here's help they offer at eBay to combat this somewhat:

    Buyer accountability

The internet is turning it's back on any negativity, and I agree it's a pity. Facebook only has a like button, no dislike button. Sure optimism is a good thing, but this is just leading people to push out crap because they think it's nice. Youtube is one of the only major sites still using the dislike button - it's great.

That buyer should know what he did was not just cool, because if not he might do it again.

I know how you feel. Open unpaid item dispute quickly and then close it within few days. This will put a strike against the bidder which is kind of negative. Most of the seller (the one I know) have auto block setup i.e. people who have unpaid strikes are not able to bid on my items.

eBay has lost it big time. Look at the new changes coming

After reporting an unpaid item to ebay, I'll put the buyer's account in my "blocked buyer/bidder list. If they want to buy from me in the future, they will have to buy with another account id.

You can access this feature from the ebay site map.

eBay have emphasized for the sellers never send the item before the payment is cleared.

I got payment with checks before through paypal, unless PayPal says money is in my account, the buyer will never be able to do such a thing. Once you get the money ship with confirmation number and you are in the safe side.

I agree. The only way to protect yourself, before you ship your item is confirmation of payment w. tracking to show proof.

You can try to explain the situation by calling it in, to see it gets anywhere, but if anything theres little they can do. They provide the phone # if needed, I would try that first.

Wow, it's been a while since I've bought or sold anything on eBay so the absence of a negative feedback option is completely new to me. Doesn't really make sense though, does it? One of the advantages of being able to see both favourable and unfavourable responses is that it allows other buyers to assess whether the seller is actually reliable or not.

Wow 10 days you are patient.
Non paying bidders have become commonplace on eBay.
Buyers know they can't get negs so they bid on multiple items
and pay for the cheapest or don't pay at all.

In my experience it's very rare that if the buyer has not paid
with 48 hours that they going to pay.

You have to open a UID with ebay, wait 4 days and then
close it, if the buyer has not responded.

Yeah the good old days on eBay are long gone...

This is what I normally do after a sale on ebay:

    1) send them a courtesy email to ask for payment (2 days in a role after they've won the auction/buy it now).

    2) if no payment, open a dispute on ebay. (some buyers will pay immediately when they saw the dispute )

    3) if they still refuse to pay after a few more days, I'll go to ebay resolution center to close the case, claim back my final value fees + block that buyer)

    Hope it helps :-)

Wow, has Ebay changed in the last decade!...I briefly was selling on there around 2000 and cannot believe all the negative changes that have occurred for sellers. I'm surprised any smaller sellers make money on Ebay today.

...and now only buyers can post negative feedback?

I once had to list a car 4 times due to non paying bidders. It really got to me in the end so I figured out a way to leave negative feedback.

    Here's what I do...

I select the "positive" feedback radio button but leave a scathing negative feedback in the comment such as...

NON PAYER!! DO NOT TRUST THIS EBAYER!!!! Negative a million
WARNING! Never do business with this guy! FAIL F- TIME WASTER!!!!
(these are actual negative/"positive" feedbacks I've left)

At least you get to have your say.

not a good idea. ebay has a specific policy prohibiting sellers from doing this very thing: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/inappropriate-feedback-comments.html

We don't allow Feedback comments that contain:

      Links or scripts
References to eBay or PayPal investigations
Negative statements left for a buyer that conflict with the positive rating
Personally identifying information about another member, including real name, address, phone number, or email address
Political, religious, or social commentary rather than a genuine comment about the transaction Comments, replies, or follow-ups that reference a separate transaction
Profane, vulgar, obscene, or racist language, or adult material

I am glad to see so many people agree with me, I just dont get why eBay would do this. It seems like they would want to warn good users of the bad users. I just decided to leave positive feedback and make it clear that my positive feedback is actually negative feedback. I guess that's my only option since negative feedback is not an option.

Yep they changed it years ago because buyers were reluctant to leave sellers negative feedback because of fears that sellers would retaliate similarly, and this was apparently "slowing down trade".

BIG Positive it's done is: Sellers are forced to consistently perform well, sell quality stuff and be kind even to terrible buyers.

That in turn allows sellers to develop compassion in every other area of their life.

    --

And yes, non-paying bidders are common. But with a follow up system in place you'll get 6/10 of them completing the transaction within 30 days.

Also, eBay is still a dream! Only if you're NOT using eBay to manage your sales. But a 3rd party solution.

I use this one and can't recommend it highly enough: AuctionSage | The Auction Software Review

Must have been a while since you've tried to leave a buyer a negative feedback.

There's a lot of ways to get back at them when it comes to "revenge" but almost none of them are worth the time or money unless you are selling high ticket items. Non-payers actually lead to saturating a marketplace and people have sued them (with eBay's assistance) in response. For example, a seller lists a piece of artwork up on eBay and wins the bid but never pays. In eBays "Sold History" - it will show up as being sold. When you go to relist that same piece of artwork, you lost credibility for it being the original, and time is wasted. I guess buying stuff on eBay actually is entering into a legally binding contract.

Like I said, its better to just move on.

Wow that's terrible! I'm sorry to hear about that. Just goes to show that people that put others business affairs at risk should be reprimanded, and that's what negative feedback is there for!

Yes this is correct, they changed it a while back now.

They do not let you give negative feedback to buyers, just one of those things, as sellers, we have to deal with.

Hope this helps and if you have any further questions feel free to ask,

    Kindest Regards

This is very true, and it saddens me. Hey, guess what there are people copying em. For example, a major online retailer that’s named after a large south american river. I think you know the company. Negative feedback is no longer allowed by them now.

Yeah like dbarnum said, it's been that way for a while now. Sorry about the situation tho. Next time require "buy it now" on all auctions with immediate payment being necessary.
