Content farms generally have very low quality content (or PLR content), and spammy links from free sites, and very little social interaction - e.g. social signals from sites like facebook, twitter, etc.

Even things like monitoring how many people click back on their browser after clicking on a link to your site from the SERPS can tell a story - If a large number of people do this compared to a site google has already identified as an authentic site by google then that is another sign something is amiss.

Contrast this to a real site with valuable content, that people willing share and you can see where this is going.

Google also uses human quality raters who evaluate website quality. Here's an intro: What Are Google Quality Raters And Are They The End Of SEO?

  • Niche sites are usually made around a specific topic, content farms are not. Content farms have many pages with nearly the same content and optimized for the same keyword. Content farms have outgoing links on every page. Content farms have many different authors. ETC.
