Selling Advertising on a Blog...

I guess this is a good "problem" to have - I'm periodically being approached by people and companies interested in buying advertising on my blog. Of course, I haven't spent a lot of time thinking about it and I'm not sure what to charge, etc, etc...

Anyone have experience or resources on selling advertising on a blog?

I'm not talking AdWords, etc., I'm talking about placing someones banner and link on my blog in exchange for a fee.

Thanks!

Adam

If you are a good designer , You can design a banner Ads and keep it in your site and you can collect the payments through paypal.
You can collect the charges according to your site popularity and ranking.
People will see the quality of the site( people are already interested in your site , according to your say), so no problem for you.
If you can't create the banner ads etc. You can put the third party banners and collect the money( for ex: buysellads etc)
But, they charge percentage of the advertisement.( up to 20 %) .

When people are coming to you to ask to advertise on your site, it's a great thing. It means your blog is doing well, is ranking well. Talk about passive income potential!

How to price? It really depends on your site's ranking and how much traffic you get that you can prove. Is your blog an authority site?

Here's another tip: only allow ads on your site that complement the content in your site. So if you blog about WordPress, for example, only accept ads from WordPress-related niches, web design and development, SEO, Web hosting, tech niches. You get what I mean, right?

Figure out your pricing this way: price for 3 mos, 6mos, 1 year, permanent (optional). You can do monthly, but it's more work for you. Figure around $10-15 per month which you adjust at the different levels so that it is advantageous for the potential advertiser to pay for a longer ad period.
If you use WordPress on your sites, all you need to do is use a widget to place the text link ads. It's a pretty simple process.

Thanks everyone for the feedback on this!

@Karen - what exactly is an "Authority Site" anyway? I'll google that now... :-)

I'm pretty well respected in my niche and do posts and articles that approach topics differently than others in the niche, I've written an eBook that sells well and am even doing some print articles in magazines now. If that all helps...

    Thanks again, everyone!

If you want to earn money from your blog you can accept advertising on your blog.
You must create an advertising media kit for your blog and link it from a homepage. The media kit includes the types of ads that your blog provides, the cost of the ad and the duration of the ads. You must also include some visitors data to your media kit so that people realizes that placing an ad on your blog will get them traffic and conversions.

Many bloggers would LOVE to get into private ad sales/revenue. I've seen blogs that made around $800 a month renting out the ad space alone. Pricing is usually based on traffic and placement.

If you decide to do it, you'll want to keep a few things in mind like keeping the advertising relevant to your blog. You'll want to keep the placement unobtrusive, yet visible to your readers. If your advertisers are receiving good traffic, they will keep renting the space. Best of luck!

Yes, indeed you should be happy to have a "problem" like this

It's the same for me. My mailbox has been bombarded by those people/companies for several of my sites. Some niches/topics are real ad magnets (naturally, some are not).

Your competitors may have "advertise with us" pages you can spy on. Or, you can simply email them and ask them for their media kits. Compare their stats to yours, study their requirements, create your rules (important, for example I don't accept link ads if I don't have 100% control over them)...

You can also sign up with advertising agencies to see how much they pay to publishers.

    Thanks again, everyone.

What I REALLY need is a formula or some guidance for what to actually charge. I have great traffic, but no real data to draw from as far as what I should CHARGE.

Again, I'm being approached by people who want to buy space from me. I just don't know what to charge them.
