Is a FB "fan" page best if I'm an author?

Hi, there,

Should I use the regular "personal" Facebook page if I'm an author, or setup a "fan" page, instead?

I'm not sure of the benefits because my name IS my brand, so to speak.

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks a lot,

- Paul

    Have both.

A personal account can only have 5000 friends. By not having a fanpage you would be possibly cutting a whole lot of potential prospects out of the equation.

You can create a fan page using your name. A fan page could be about a public figure, that's you.

A fan page is really more advantageous to use because the fans can receive updates from you instantly, after they have clicked your like button. If you'll be using an ordinary Facebook Page, then your friends can restrict your updates and they have to subscribe to your page to see your daily updates.

With a fan page, you can link your blog updates through Networked Blogs.

if you are going to use it for business purposes by all means go for fan page and build it into 1000s of fans, because on your personal profile you are limited on 5000.
And if you are promoting "yourself" as you said it it should be a fan page because people will like it for a reason and every post or whatever you do will reflect your opinion and will reach your target audience "your fans", instead of spamming your personal profile, with your relatives, friends, ...
And there are application you can build, and a lot more with you fan page.

You guys know any good sources of info for what makes enticing and good material to post?

Meaning how to make my fan page most successful?

Be personable and make sure to release your work. Keep posting your own quotes. Promote hot seller books that fit into your reader's genre. Look up local events about famous authors and promote them to your readers. Give people a reason, aside from your reading to follow you. Make sure to keep within the realm of your "Brand Image" as an author.

Also, make sure that you come across as either
      1) 100% Profressional and backed by a label (even if you are not)
      2) 100% Self-Published and working your way up.

Don't be half and half, people will see through it.

The hardest (What I am facing) getting likes and friends on FB, it's harder. Run a FB AD to your fan page, that works best. Then link your fan page to your Real Page link this, "Want to get to know "xxyouxx" personally? - "xxyouxx" has made his/her personal FB page public for his/her readers." Or sometime along those lines.

    Have both!

It is really simple to do the basic set up and keeping them updated is easy.

Once you hit the 5000 friend mark, you will already have your fan page up so there is no reason to wait.

Plus there are things you can do on the fan page you cannot do on the personal page.

If I'm worried about competitor authors spamming my "wall" - should I not allow comments or people to post their thoughts, etc?

Is this going to "detract" from the value of this as "social" media?

I have many fan pages and have helped friends set up many and even maintained a few for friends and clients for a short while to get them going and in all that time, in all those different markets, I have NEVER had any real problem with spammers.

Once in a very short while someone would post on the wall and I immediately delete it off the wall and block that one person. I would not want to block everyone as when you do really well and people post really great testimonials on your wall, that is like GOLD!

Regardless what else I'm doing on my computer, facebook is always open plus I have it on my smartphone, so once you get the hang of it, updating and checking your friends page and your fan pages is really quick and easy.

I am actually amazed that this very high profile and lucrative method is not used by more people. It is FREE.

And btw, I have NEVER purchased a facebook ad to get people to my fan page and I really do not think you need it.

If you offer really valuable stuff, you will get really targeted fans and friends.

I learned all this myself from trial and error. If one of my friends wants to start a page will supply me with the content, I can usually get them thousands of fans in a few days to a few weeks depending on their already existing platform.

And again, these are quality, targeted fans of people who want to be there.

Because these days, it is about interaction, not numbers. My page that is active with 734 people is much better than pages with tens of thousands of fans but only 20 or less active ones.

Have them both...fan page and personal account and just report the spammers or let the comments on for your personal account and use the fan page to show your creations
