Outsourcing Anno 2012 - Where, whom and how?

Dear Warriors,

I'm looking to outsource a few projects, starting with a $100 test-budget.
Now I've been looking at odesk.com and elance, and I was wondering if any of you have had experience(s) with web developers there.

I'm looking for the cheapest possible solution, while quality should at least be O.K.. Perhaps there are some quality guides you can refer me to?

    In my experience, cheap and OK quality do not coincide unless you've managed to catch yourself a talented newbie that doesn't yet know the value of his/her work. And that's a rare find.

      Assuming you are an expert in outsourcing, what you would consider a 'good' price for coding work? And which countries would you advise to look for in particular because of price/quality relation?

        Collatio, I can't give you a 'good' coding price without knowing the entire scope of the project. If you can manage to pay by the hour, however, you can expect serious results from paying $36/hour. That's the average pay rate for experienced, educated computer programmers in the U.S. minus associated employee costs (the base reason and fundamental benefit of outsourcing).

        As far as a country-to-price/quality ratio, there is none despite what you might have read in those ridiculous "Easy Outsource Secrets" guides. You simply can't expect a certain programmer charging $X in Greece to yield better or worse results than a programmer who charges $Y in Japan. There's no logic in that line of thought because there are too many other factors that come into play.

        If you want the best bang for your buck, you've gotta do your homework. You'll need to investigate average pay rates for experienced, educated programmers in the country you're interested in (which should be your country for legal reasons), estimate the number of hours it may take to complete the job, and then compare the results.

    The secret is in finding and screening your applicant. It is however quite difficult as freelancers have perfected the art of automating replies in ODesk and Elance. You will therefore be faced by tens of spammy messages in your inbox. An easier practice might be for you to review the freelancers on the platform and invite them to work for you.
