Call to All Warriors - Turn £10 into £100, £1000, More?

Hey Warriors,

I have been dropped at short notice into a regional competition for a university version of "The apprentice" (UK show with Alan Sugar? - YOUR FIRED?).

Basically our task is going to be to turn $10 into as much money as possible in about 5 hours. This is likely all going to be offline work and we can travel around a whole city so hopefully the resources should be available.

Anyone got ideas, experience or resources doing any sort of task like this?

Getting from say £10 to maybe £50-100 shouldn't be that much of a problem (buying small cheap things and marking up - disposable raincoats if the weather is bad for example), but actually quickly scaling that £100 up may be more challenging.

Any ideas guys?

Anything will be really appreciated!

Kind Regards,
Connor McCreesh

It might not be applicable in this situation, but selling cups of coffee would get you a very high ROI.

Cheers Mick, Yeah we have though a bit about hot drinks, soups, even ice cream, just depends on what facilities we can get to I guess. May be a good idea though!

      Anyone else?

Do you know what time you are going to start? Any limitations you are aware of?

The thing is to be able to get a quick start to build your seed money.

Maybe give some thought to providing a service in the first stage. For example, buying two raincoats for $5, selling them for $10, going to buy four raincoats, selling them for ten, etc will work, but there's a practical issue of getting to and from the location you are selling raincoats from and then far enough away again to sell them at a markup. That eats into your time.

What about spending ten quid on shoepolish and a rag and doing shoeshines. You could kill that for the first hour with a bit of personality. It doesn't have to be shoes, just some quick service you can offer that can get you some decent seed money.

From there you have more options. Getting produce at the market and then selling it for massive markup in the commercial district is standard around here (really...$2 for an apple...ok screw it it looks good).

If you have lead in time (ie, if you can set things up now to help you on the day) you could call ahead and ask some places if you can drop in with fruit salad or something to sell to staff. Buy a bunch of fruit, some cheap containers, cut it up and sell each container for a fiver. Everyones health crazy these days, get in right on morning tea time or lunch. Delivering coffees (made by someone else but with a markup) could work too if you can find a place with lots of workers to make it quick.

Do you have to complete the transactions within the 5 hours or can you book sales within the five hours and deliver on the promise later? That would have interesting implications.

Thanks for all the great info BeeJay,

We are in a team of 4 - 5 and there are restrictions but they will be announced on the day. As far as I know nothing can be preplanned outside of the group. Some of those ideas are great. We had thought about friut as for example you couldn't sell a pineapple for £5 but cut it into pieces and sell 5 pots for £1 each should be easily doable.

Actually going into busy places at lunch time is a great idea though. Tea and coffee would work well with that as well.

Shoe polish idea is an interesting one as well.

All transacations have to be completed within the 5 hours.

      Thanks for the great ideas.

Man, this reminds me of something I saw on TV. I think it was a infomercial for how to buy cheap homes but anyway, the guy was given a $100 bill and by the end of the day the guy somehow bought several houses and even had change left over.

I wish I could think of the name of the guy for you so you could probably Google him and copy the basic idea of his program.
