Question on offering refunds for custom website design and writing work

Hi folks,

As I've mentioned on several occasions in several threads, I'm working on starting up a new business offering site design and seo services (Until now, I had only offered writing services). My plan is to offer a partially customized site with part of the service being a fixed design.

Basically, I'll offer a standard setup of a static front page, blog and shopping cart (all done through Wordpress) with mobile ready site built in. This part is standardized -- the client picks the theme they like (I have developer rights on around a dozen premium themes) and all I need to do is upload the ready made site to the customer's server and set the theme (I'm also throwing in around 10 premium plugins I have developer rights on plus setting up a few more free plugins which make things run more smoothly). If this was all I needed to do, I'd offer 100% guaranteed refunds without a question since my time investment is minimal and it's worth it to keep up a good reputation.

The question arises however because I'm treating this as an extension of my writing and seo business (As I said, I've been making my living as a writer for a number of years now but want to expand into these peripheral areas since I've gained extensive expertise on them).

I'm going to be offering custom written home pages as well as one custom written blog post as part of the package. I'll also do custom logos/mastheads (may be outsourcing those though -- I'm pretty good with graphics, but some of the folks who do this on Fiverr are amazing and it may be worth outsourcing rather than spending the time to do something myself).

I'll also be offering an initial seo package including forum profiles, blog backlinks and video submission (I turn the blog post into a video and submit to several dozen sites).

All this is going to take me several hours of work (and or cost money if I outsource part of the job) and therein lies the problem.

Do I offer 100% refunds if people are not happy with my custom work? I already plan to offer the same thing I've always offered with my writing work -- two free revisions if needed to make the customer happy (it's very rare that I get a revision request and in all the time I've been writing, I don't ever recall getting a second revision request).

But what if they're still not happy after I've put in all that work? Do I then make a standard policy that I offer a money back guarantee anyway and just accept that a certain percentage will try to get out paying by doing this (I know there may on rare occasions be genuine concerns, but when I offer two free revisions, in 99% of cases, if people are still not satisfied it's because they're being cheap and trying to get away with not paying anything rather than because they really are still not happy)?

I'm wondering what other people who do this kind of work use for their own policies.

Also, if I do offer a money back guarantee, do I make it contingent on my deleting the site I created for them first or do I offer to let them keep the work I did (this would probably deter the people who are trying to cheat but it may also sound petty to the very rare person who legitimately isn't happy)?

I realize there are no hard and fast answers to this and everyone will have their opinion, but I'd love to hear from other people who design websites and or who do custom writing or seo work about what their policies are.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Eric

Anyone? Any ideas? I know I went on and on a bit above but the bottom line question I was asking was: do people who offer custom site design and seo services generally offer money back guarantees? Or do you simply offer to do additional revisions until the customer is happy?

I'm kind of leaning toward offering 100% money back guarantee with the proviso that I will remove the site I created for the client before hand. Just looking for opinions on this.

      Both.

I've only ever once had a client who wanted a refund, in the 7 years I've been doing this.

Focus more on the customer service than the money coming in (and staying in) and you'll delight your clients every time, the money will take care of itself.

      Kindest regards,
      Karl.

    Hi,

I used to do a lot of custom wordpress blogs for people. I would use a premium theme and then customize it for their needs. Kind of similar to what you are saying.

I would not offer a refund at all because you cannot get your time back and the customization cannot be used for someone else in most cases.

Also, I would make it clear how many iterations of your custom logo you will provide. You will find that many people just like what you do right off the bat, but others will want excessive tweaking to the design all of which cost you time/money. Better to be clear up front.

P.S. If you are using fiverr for logo design, make sure you buy the images yourself from a stock photo site so that you have proof of ownership and can give that to the client.

    I'll also add...

If you do your best job every time, you'll very rarely get asked for revisions anyway. So adding those two guarantees are good to help convert those on the fence, and you'll rarely get taken up on the guarantee.

I would offer more services and not money back. you are putting your time and effort into this that can never be returned. give more in terms of your services to give more to your clients.

Depends, if you are targeting low end clients with "cheap" prices then you are probably going to have more issues of people asking for refunds. These clients want it done for free or cheap in the first place. They don't want revisions, they want the stuff free.

When you target real businesses, those people don't mind paying for stuff. But they do want it to look good and be right. These clients are usually going to request a revisions rather than a refund.

So, I would say that your marketing and price point will have a big impact on the type of clients you end up with. That will in turn dictate what you should offer in terms of revisions / refunds.

As a real business owner, I almost never ask for a refund unless the finished product is just totally unusable. If I am unhappy with the quality, I just pay them and move on to get someone else to fix it or redo things.

Thanks for the advice folks. I already have built into my plan to offer up to two free revisions if needed. I was just wondering about the refund thing. Seems to be a split with some people saying yes and others no.

BTW, David, I plan to be on the cheap side to make it affordable for even people on a shoestring budget, but not the ridiculously cheap side (I'm thinking $149.95 including everything, which is much cheaper than what virtually all custom designed sites go for, but it's also not the $5 cookie cutter style deals that you can buy as a "site in a box" on Fiverr or sometimes in WSOs where all the person did was to load up a site and change the name on the masthead). I guess I'll have to see how things go with that.

However, I think your point also reinforces what I was leaning towards -- I offer a money back guarantee, but I also delete all my work. This way the cheaters know they can't get away with it. The fact that I'll have to eat the cost of my time for development on rare occasions, I guess I'll just chalk up to the price of doing business.

The truth is that you will make more sales if you do offer a refund guarantee. If your work is quality, you probably won't eat to much time up working for free due to refunds.

At the $150 ish price range, you will have probably priced out the worst of the worst among the "I want everything for nothing customers".

Why in the world would you offer 100% refunds for custom work?

Psychology. People rarely take advantage of refunds, especially if they won't get anything but their money back (I plan to offer refunds but will remove my work). However, by giving them the peace of mind of knowing they can request a refund, it gets many fence sitters to decide to take the plunge. I wrote a long article about it a while back on my personal finance blog:

Why a Money Back Guarantee Isn

My one concern is the cheapstakes who will try to take advantage of the money back guarantee to get stuff done for free for them. However, by putting up something like this:

      Money Back Guarantee!

If you're not completely satisfied with the new website we created for you, we don't want your money! At any time within 60 days, you can ask for a full refund of your money. We'll take down the site we created for you and remove any trace of our work so you can start again with someone else with our best wishes and no hard feelings.

Like this, I'm basically serving warning to the scammers that they won't simply get their site handed to them for free. Of course, they could go ahead and copy it off the server before I delete it, but I find that most people who want to try a scam are also too lazy to figure out how to do technical stuff. The wording also makes it sound for the tiny handful of legit people who really don't want what I did like I'm doing them a favor by taking it down rather than protecting myself from scammers.

I think this is probably the best approach since it gives me some protection (some parts of the content I create can probably be reused) while at the same time, it gives my customers the extra psychological push they need to decide to place an order.
