Is the word "GIG" copyright?

I have just read somewhere that the word gig is copyright and cannot be used in a domain name.

The person in the forum it was posted said that the word is the copyright of Fiverr, is this correct?
#copyright #gig #word

While I am not an expert I would say no. For example Shane Natans website is called IMgigz.

Also, this is a excerpt from the US copyright office.

§ 202.1 Material not subject to copyright.

The following are examples of works not subject to copyright and applications for registration of such works cannot be entertained:

    (a) Words and short phrases such as names, titles, and slogans; familiar symbols or designs; mere variations of typographic ornamentation, lettering or coloring; mere listing of ingredients or contents;

There may be a trademark issue, not with Fiverr, but in general but as far as copyright, well the above from the copyright office lays it out.

I checked gig.com. Does that site belong to Fiverr? Whatever's the answer to that question, you'll have your answer of whether the word is copyrighted by Fiverr or not. Another thing, as per the US copyright office, words can't be copyrighted. I remember playing an online game before that has a monster that's named "gig" and it resembles a scorpion.

    hi cjbmeb14,

Fiverr applied for the word GIG and GIGS to get them copyrighted, but their application was turned down. Probably because these words, already being used way old and longer by other websites like craigslist and for music groups.

    regarding less why.

The short answer is NO it is not copyrighted.

If a word is a standard word in English, it can't be copyrighted.

    'gig' can't be copyrighted.

    Thanks for the answers.
I must admit that I did not think it was copyright but thought it was worth checking with WF experts first.

It's a registered trademark, guys, not a copyright.

I'm no lawyer, but that means that its usage will have some restrictions depending on the context within which it's used. My guess is that it would perhaps be unwise to use it in a domain-name of a site intended to compete with Fiverr. This area of law is murky and complicated and develops gradually through case-law court/tribunal decisions. Certainty isn't going to be easy to come by, on a question like this!

I think Alexa is probably right!
I just looked at fiverr and it says this:
FIVERR®, GIG®, GIGS®, I WILL __ for $5™, The Things People Do For $5™, DamnQuickPay™, Fiverr graphics, logos, scripts, terms of use, instructions, designs and other service names are the trademarks and copyright of Fiverr International Limited

How the **** are they able to register Gig? That would mean I could open a site and register "Concert" or "Event" that just makes no sense at all.

Are you planning on using "gig" in your domain name? If so, then just avoid all the extra baggage behind it and choose something different. Is the word "gig" an essential element in your domain name/website branding?

Fiverr and other companies do not own the exclusive right to use ANY recognized word, dictionary or otherwise, unless they made up the word on their own. I guess Facebook would own the sole right to use Face and Book if that were the case, but no.

But if you have "gig" in your domain and your site or use is specifically related to Fiverr, then you may have a problem.

When Zynga's game "Cityville" came out, I registered a few domains with "cityville" in the name, intending to promote the game. A Zynga attorney contacted me by email the very next day after registering those domains and asked my intention and gave me some warnings...

When I explained to the attorney that I planned to promote the game but would have a disclaimer on my site showing disassociation with both Zynga and Cityville and promised not to provide downloads or "cheats" to the game, the attorney basically said 'Good enough!' and that was the end of it.

Tell that to TeachBook who got a lawsuit over trademark infringement from Facebook.

Facebook and Teachbook, a social networking site for teachers, have settled a lawsuit that began two years ago when Facebook alleged trademark infringement against the ed-tech company.

Under terms of the agreement, Teachbook has changed its name to TeachQuest and will continue to operate as an online platform dedicated to being a one-stop planning and learning tool for educators, administrators, and students.

A joint statement from the companies read: "We are pleased to announce that Facebook and Teachbook have arrived at an agreement that resolves Facebook's trademark infringement lawsuit and allows for Teachbook's continued operation under a new name. Under this agreement, Teachbook has changed its name to 'TeachQuest.' Facebook and Teachbook are pleased to put this dispute behind them."

LOL! Yes, but as you know people do search for information on Google. Could still come up in search results and be useful. March wasn't TOO long ago.

It's not copyright. It's a trademark and yes, it is trademarked by Fiverr
