Freelance writer experimenting with IM, where to invest?

Greetings,

Over the past couple years I've managed to make a tolerable living online ghost writing content for clients. However, my fiance is now expecting and it really has me searching for ways to diversify. I'd like to not be dependent on the fluctuation of my client list, and honestly it kind of just occurred to me that if these people are willing to pay me 50 bucks for an article... they must be making at least 4 times that kind of profit. Also, the idea of actually getting credit for writing is very appealing. Anyways, I digress...

I have set aside 2 grand for launching this blog. However, despite writing many SEO articles for clients... I'm completely overwhelmed by how utterly excruciating the whole promoting/backlinking process is. At this point, I'd be willing to invest another 2,000 just to save myself the hassle. The site has been live for a week, it's generating roughly 100 hits a day, and so far I've wasted 200 bucks on failed mylikes campaigns and gotten banned by adwords for apparently having clickbank links. Yeah, I'm a complete n00b.

If you were in my position, how would you invest between 2 and 4 thousand dollars to launch a health blog? My bad if this post was a little long winded. Basically, after getting banned by adwords it has become quite apparent that google doesn't play. I'm terrified of paying some hack to backlink for me and getting banned by google for black hat shenanigans.

I truly will appreciate any help or suggestions.

Forget about backlinks, the thing is in todays 2012 environment backlinks are no longer near as important as content.

Sure they are still useful but these days the focus is content. Write great engaging content that appears to your visitors and spent a bit of time with social media (facebook, twitter, google plus, etc) attracting readers.

I have sites with decent content that links OUT to many other sites but itself has little if any backlinks getting hundreds of visitors per day because the content is good.

Most people are not aware of this and the other thing to note her is to not expect this to happen immediately - a 5 post web site is not going to cut it.

The other thing to use are internal links to link your posts with the keywords you are looking to rank for.

Try it and what your traffic grow as you add more and more content to your site.

    Good luck!

Thank you for taking the time to reply,

I have the content aspect down. My job for the past year has been creating a wide variety of SEO friendly content, I just never tried marketing it myself. I launched the blog initially with 10 original, high quality articles. I have enough in my catalog to post roughly 1 a day for the next three months. I'm already noticing organic traffic from bing, yahoo, and google, ect. However, to be perfectly honest I'm hoping that throwing a few thousand into it could jump start it and make me a profit within 30 or 40 days? Is that too unrealistic? I'm honestly willing to pay for the best.
