How to test keyword competition strengh?

I have been doing a little in the offlie niche, I now want to build a site and get high serps rankings fast. I remember reading on here about how to test the competition for a keyword or keyphrase but canty find it now,

Is it best to write an article and digg it?

by the way this niche has 6 longtails that i have found, each one with an average search volume on exact google kw tool of 3,000 per month and the one with most competition has only 6,500 competing sites with "" and 221,000 without.

    1. Go to google keyword tool and find how many searches are done on these keywords.

    2. Check the number of results for those same keywords by searching them in google, use phrase match by surrounding your keywords with double quote.

    A good keyword will get a lot of searches and not a lot of results in google.
