Lesson Learnt - Wait for reliable people to deliver quality, instead of rushing.

Well, although I only lost $125, heres the story. I won't name and shame the person, but it's pretty annoying.

I needed some product reviews written ASAP. So I started looking around the warriors for hire section. After finding an article writer, I decided to ask for a quote, they gave me a reasonable TAT and price. They had some positive feedback. So i thought why not?

Anyway, 2 days later I get a few of the articles, and not only are they in shocking English(their advertisement said "college-level English & grammar"), but they are not even reviews!

I asked for a refund, but they just complained at me for wasting their time. I filed a paypal dispute, but unfortunately they couldn't side with me as the product was virtual. I haven't heard from them since.

It's a shame and I know I shouldn't be prejudice against new people getting in to article writing. But I'm going to stick with 2 good old rules.

1. If you want something done right, do it yourself.
2. Reputation Usually speaks for itself

I'm only dealing with the big dog article writers from now on.

Oh well, lesson learnt. Time to move on.

    Sorry to hear that.

I wonder if it is a common practice that writers, product creators, etc., pay people for testimonials and positive reviews.

    1) That's the mentality of a self employed. Real business owners knows how and where to find the right people to do the right task, and the work gets done far better and faster than doing it yourself.

    2) Agreed, although that may also be misleading at times.

You don't have to name and shame, but I suppose it's a good idea to post an honest review on the service provider's thread so that potential customers have an idea of what kind of quality they're expecting, and the provider himself have some inclination to pull up his act.

I have got good people to go to, but they are booked up 99% of the time, but these articles were a matter of urgency. So i thought I'd try someone smaller so they could get started right away.

If I'm not in a hurry, I'll wait for quality from now on. But if its urgent I'll just take care of it myself.

True, you are not allowed to name here anybody (see the Forum Rules #1), however, it is your moral obligation to go to the Hire section and post an objective feedback for that service provider.

Just be careful: nothing personal, do not attack the service provider himself, only describe your disappointment with the service - factual, to the point and professional feedback.

If you find a review in the WSO or WFH section that was written for pay, report it to the mods and it will be removed. Chances are the reviewer and whoever paid for the review will both get a little vacation from the forum.

The OP was hiring someone to write reviews for affiliate products, not his own product. This is reasonably common, and primarily involves research of existing reviews to get a general sense of what people are saying about it. There's nothing unethical about the practice.

If you have found good writers earlier then my advice is to stick with him/her. Because finding quality article writers has become a difficult job these days. And most of the article writer I have met are actually article re-writer.

Unfortunately, good writers in particular are very difficult to find. Most have "great reviews," but often they'll start going down hill after a month or two of good work. Good writers are out there, though. You've just got to try a bunch of bad ones before you find the one or two worth keeping.

Don't totally give up on outsourcing work based on this experience, however tempting it may be to do so. If you don't get comfortable giving up control and delegating a bit - even though certain things may not be done the way you'd have done them - your ability to scale your business will be extremely limited in the long run. On top of that, you'll work a lot harder than you actually have to in order to achieve the income you want.

Maybe you won't try outsourcing writing again - many people don't, and fair enough. Writing style is a very personal thing, so in many cases it doesn't make sense to have someone else do it. However, give it a try for other things. Outsourcing can be a great experience.
