Should Social Media Have A Personality?

Having an online store is great. It saves any rental fees for having a street shop, electrics, bills, breakins, and you can attract customers throughout the UK/Worlwide rather than just your postcode area. One thing it doesn't do is have face to face communication and personality when you load up the website homepage as if you were walking through a shop door greeted by the customer care team with a smile and asking how is your day.

Online businesses potentially have the world at their feet with what online marketing has to offer. From free online directories, blogs, link exchanges and what appear to be most popular, social sites. Your customer base can be anyone from people at work browsing through your site on their lunch hour, browsing on their days off sat on their sofa or sitting on public transport doing their daily commute. Your website is accessbile through google ranks etc but having your business on twitter and facebook if much more direct and free! Fans and potential customer can receive your tweets and facebook statuses directly to their computer and also their mobile phones.

Times are changing and social media is already the next big thing. Whether its facebook or twitter your using, does it help you?

I believe that gaining followers is great and gives you a sense of achievement and makes you feel that you have a mini fan base. Returning the favour and following people back is also a bonus. I also believe that you should communicate back to your followers and show a personality as at the end of the day, you want your business to succeed and to interact will increase popularity but also its just being polite.

Many companies on twitter for example have thousands of followers but dont follow anyone back unless their a celebrity and never send genuine tweets. I guess if your a super fan of their products you are only interested in when the next 'sale' tweet will be sent, but dont you want to interact with the company and for them to have a personality? Show you that there is a human who sends the tweets and they genuinely want to tell you what's great about the brand rather then robotic tweets and that they are interested in their customer fan base?

I manage twitter accounts and interact alot with our followers also seen as potential customers. Whether its a sales tweet or new product launch, i believe that showing a personality from your account is more appealing and makes social media tools more fun, am i right or wrong?

The goal of the companies is to get people to buy. Do they do that by posting sales, posting interesting tweets/articles, or by getting a lot of followers, and use some other method?

I agree that if a company can post interesting tweets...and sales, they will do a lot of business.

It's what you do when no one is watching
that determines what you will be able to
    do when everyone is watching.

i agree that both, should really interact with their followers but also sell their business. I dont really agree with just cold sale tweets. Many people use twitter just for sales and to gain brand awareness, im sure many companies have succeeded in being a successful business by cold sales but i think interacting and sales tweets work best..

I think so. The more views the more likely you'll get sales

This is a tricky subject area, but I'll try and touch on everything that I consider relevant in my reply.

The incredibly short answer to your question is 'Yes'. Think of it from a consumer perspective- if you see that a company's presence on social networking platforms frequently engages with and helps their consumers, then of course you are more likely to develop a preference for them.

However, in terms of promoting a business to new customers, it's really difficult. Depending on what your business is of course, a strategy that involves gaining followers and fans who are genuinely interested in what you have to say each day is one that needs to be long-term. Unless your business is one that is already well established in the minds of consumers, (I'm thinking Starbucks, Coca Cola, and so on) you have to ask why would people want to 'friend' you?

A large number of people do not want to be marketed at when they go on these websites, they simply want to communicate with friends and family. As such, any attempt to broadcast a business message has to be done very carefully.

It may be that your social marketing strategy is simply to provide money off coupons and other promotions- and this may be the most effective. The absolute worst is certainly one that involves continually spamming your followers/fans/subscribers with advertising methods.

Ultimately, success with social media marketing comes down to finding a balance between providing value and effective front-line customer service. Whether or not this is done with 'personality' as you describe it is up to the marketer- though I will say there's nothing worse than a business painfuly trying to be 'hip'!

I definitely think that you should show some personality through social media. Who wants to follow some boring account that has nothing entertaining to show me?
