Help with a Google slap..

Hey there,

I have my database driven site that has been steadily growing and increasing traffic and rank naturally for the first 4 months, and I uploaded a new sitemap which listed a whole lot more pages suddenly, and the growth was awesome jumped from 250 up to 1500 pageviews per day, and a similar increase in visitors.

This lasted for about 2-3 weeks and then suddenly dropped back down to below my original 250 pageviews / 100 visitors.

I am not trying to do anything blackhat, and have not been doing any aggressive link building activities as I was wanting to build the quality of the site up before promotion.

My question is what could have happened?
I have logged into webmaster tools on google, and there are about 35 404s from my sitemap, could this be critical?

Also the meta description is repeated on 656 pages which I didn't think was too critical because Google by and large ignored that - maybe not!

Maybe I have been put in the supplementals?

Any help would be really appreciated.

(My site is adslgeek.com)

It happens all the time. It's the google dance it will be back whenever G decides it's time. Be patient and focus on something else for a while. You don't have to do anything wrong for it to happen. It happened to me a couple of times now, I just say oh it's in the sandbox and move on.

Yep, this is what I was going to say. It happens to just about every site at least once. The site should come back and be just as it was before.

How much unique content is on these pages? A lot of people have been noticing this if they are constructing "thin affiliate sites".

I do have a blog that is not unique content, and is just feeding off rss feeds from a couple of other sites. - should I put a robots exclude, or will duplicate content just have neutral benefit, which is what I had thought. Eg it will be good for real customers to have good fresh content on my site, but not adding any google rank to my page.

I have fixed my broken links, as well as the duplicate metatags.

Your comment about a thin affiliate site comment had me curious - I do feature affiliate links some pages have plan finders that are affiliates, and also some of my blog posts do feature affiliate links.

But I also have heaps of content that links out to non affiliate links.

I am going to work on my linking to see if that fixes things, but I was worried that there might be something else that I am doing wrong that still is on my site that will just mean that the link building wouldn't help.

All you can really do is submit to the Big "G" and play the game. Some of these things are really quite random. It also requires patience

Google Webmaster Tools has a tool that allows you to remove all the 404 pages from its indexing and help your rank. Also, having the same description on a bunch of pages hurts your ranking because Google want the descriptions to be beneficial to the visitors. I have a couple of pages with the same description on my site which I haven't gone back and changed but I need to do that.

If I understand you correctly, you have automatically generated pages which is usually done by scraping or pulling articles from article sites. The articles won't get much if any PageRank so your site will not get any boost from them either.

I recommend that you first fix the 404 issues and the descriptions and then begin creating pages with good content and your rank will go up. Not overnight but you will begin to see visitors from long tail keywords.

        I hope this helped.

Thanks so much for your help, this forum is awesome.

What is a thin affiliate site? I do have a bunch of affiliate links on my site, but there are also heaps of legit links out to other legit sites (It has for example all the DSL modems or ISPs, and links to resources for them).

I also have my blog just has an import RSS feed which while it won't help my page rank due to duplicate content, I didn't think it would do much damage? It is helpful cause it means that it is good for real visitors, and has good fresh content for them (but I realise not so much for Google!) I have not included the blog on my sitemap (though the blog produces one) because I am not fussed if google does or doesn't rank those pages, given that it wont really help the rank.

The database content is a collation of different research, but is relatively similar eg a page with similar headings for different modems - if I don't have much info about that modem, then it would be identical to another one that didn't have much content on.

I am going to go back and tidy up the 404s and metatags, maybe focus on my site content (Focus on making it a decent site, and hope that builds the links organically, as well as direct traffic). I have about 50% real traffic that is coming to it directly, so it must be getting good word of mouth.

Does anyone know if having 5000 + pages in my sitemap would be a problem?

Does having the same meta mean that I have been put in supplementals? I hear that is a very common problem when you have traffic just die back like that?

I guess I will keep playing in the sandpit!

I just went to G and searched for "adslgeek", then "adsl geek" (without the quotes). Your site is number one for both searches. Therefore, I would say your SITE hasn't been penalized in any way. Maybe it has dropped in the SERPS for certain keywords that were bringing you that traffic.

Are you using Google Analytics? Can you tell which keywords were bringing you the 1500 visitors daily and where these visitors were coming from?

Also, your site will go up and down in the SERPS until Google decides where it wants to settle you in. But, you are going to have to start getting backlinks to your site if you want to improve your ranking, thus improving your traffic.

    Cheers mate,

I have gone back with Analytics..almost all of my traffic is and was extremely long tail - I did that on purpose because the database is listing thousands of modems and includes the technical details, during the peak only about 10 keywords brought more than 2 visitors, and the rest was 1 visitor for 1 keyword. But I was getting 174 keywords incoming with 1 visitor each.

After Boxing day I have 74 keywords that have 1 search term for each term, they are all similar terms (eg technical modem terms).

I do need to work on the linking because I understand, it is important to keep that gradually building and I will probably do it through manual forum posting with legitimate answers to questions etc, so that will build the natural reputation of the site within those forum groups.

I understand that deeplinking would be better as that can build up the rank of some of my stronger keywords directing to specific pages as well.

Is there an issue with no follow tags? I understand some forums have no rank value because of that? Does posting to forums with signature links have a lower value?

      Hi adslgeek,

There is an issue with nofollow tags. The forums have rank but a nofollow tag tells Google to not pass on PageRank. What you get is the possibility of people following your link to your site but you get no Google Love from it.

      I hope this helps.

Just to clarify the google slap is is more about adwords and the dance is about their organic listings.

Don't listen to what people say but get it straight from the people who control all of this and the best place to start is at Matt Cutts, who works for google, for everything about google.

Yes, you are correct, Quentin. A lot of people call different things a "Google slap" but Google doesn't do real "slaps" all THAT often. The 'dance' is all about listings in the organic searches that go up and down, which is very, very common and just about everyone has experienced it at least once.

i agree... be patient, keep building links and quality content on your website and you will make your way back up. usually google likes to put fresh content at the top to test it a bit and then it sinks you like a rock, if you want the type of traffic you were getting then you will need quality anchor text links pointing to your content like everyone else...

Thanks so much for everyone's support you guys really rock! - this is my first time to be impacted by the Google dance, and I was assuming it was because I was doing something really wrong and being almost de-listed and would remain there until I fixed something.

It was just such a sudden thing that it got me worried I had done something bad. I will keep doing the good stuff! Link building, quality content and article marketing.

Last question I swear! - I have a large database from an open source, so will be duplicate content, if I put dup content up, does that mark me down, or is it neutral for my rank?

The other idea I can do is to dynamically generate additional content to add to the end that will make the content slightly different? By generating a stock variation to the end of the review?

I guess the question is how much content has to be unique before it is penalized, and how much penalty would it have?

yeah, you probably didnt do anything wrong. When it first happened to me last May it freaked me out. But that is the way the Big G does things. And yes you could call it a dance. Best thing to do is put your nose to the grindstone and thru work and time this stuff will be happening less and less !!

Add more unique content to your blog. Then start implementing a back link building strategy.

For all my stressing about google hating me for doing funny stuff, it was just the backlinking that needed tuning, I have doubled my traffic in the last 3 days from a bit of effort posting up in the forums.

Sometimes this SEO is just basics eh!

Just a thought, but if you do not have a FAV Icon on all of your pages, that will continually produce a large number of 404 errors. (Every time a page without one is loaded up actually) and that seriously impacts page rank.

    Just a thought
